To add to our growing list of firsts, we sponsored the first Football Queen Contest, we are the first junior class to have such a large treasury, and one of our noon dances was the largest ever given. Our other activities included a football rally, two other noon dances, an after-game dance, a Spring Fever dance, and of course, our gala prom given for the seniors, which was the best event of the season. The Ways and Means Committee did a fine job this year and We wish to thank them. Most of our success is due to the patience and foresight ol' our Wonder- ful advisors, Bernice Meng and Boss Jacobsen. I Sixty-Four 1 Class Histor FRESHMAN It was 1943, the prime of World War II, when We, the class of '47, entered the good 'ole Alma Mater of D. P. H. S. as little, young, scared-to- death and very green frosh. That year was filled with a great many little surprises whichlincluded Hey, Freshie from all the upperclassmen and also the grave responsibility of presenting a rally and night dance to a critical bunch of uppers. The dance was a successful oneg the Hawaiian theme was carried out very cleverly, and everyone wore leis. The annual FFA Barn Dance candidate four firstl was Lura Flock, who put up some swell competition but didn't quite make it. Advisors for that year were Coach Ike Frankian and Miss Boyd, who guided us through thick and thin and did much to encourage us. Thus our Freshman year was over. SOPHOMORE One step higher and not so green, but just a little wobbly at the knees, the class was eager to push ahead. This year the class elected a new ad- visor, Miss Rhoda, along with Coach Frankian. A Sophomore Rabbit Hop was held in the spring-lots'n lots of fun. CReal live rabbits were given as prizes.J A rally this year was a little easier to present and had improved since the last year. About this time, the class became Prom conscious as it grew nearer to the end of the year. So a turkey raffle was sponsored, with all the funds going toward the prom which we were to give as tradition to the Seniors the next year. School was out-and an eager group was ready to go back in the fall as juniors and upperclassmen. I Sixty-Five :I JUNIORS Ahern I !-We were now upperclassmen-fno more getting pushed around for us-we chose a motto, flower, color, and held the first Back to School Dance of the year., This year Mrs. Bourne was elected as class ad- visor. Our ability for presenting a rally improved with years and went over -with a bang-If you saw David Mumby, Bobby John, and Bill Cantrell giving with that old hula swing and how the student body roared, you need no other proof that the rally was a sna-Zee. Betty Hoffmayr, our F. F. A. Queen candidate, came in a very close second at the annual Barn Dance. The highest point of the year was the J unior-Senior Prom with its Pot of gold at the end of the Rainbow theme. This prom was considered one of the best and finest ever given to a senior class in the history of D. P. H. S. The seniors had a swell time, and we were eager for next year when we too could be honored guests at the prom. The year was then over and -Ch! Boy! only one more year. A SENIORS At last-At last we led the parade. We were now big shots, the high and mighty seniors of '4'7. We started the year off by supporting our Penny Queen Candidate, Lura Flock, to the utmost. Lura was crowned FOOTBALL QUEEN OF 1946 by the captain of the varsity football team. Honors for Lura and for the Senior Class. An after game dance was held, and we presented the first rally of the season. And get this-we were the first class in the school history to have two 'Senior Ditch Days. Cflircumstances of WHY needn't be explained.J This year our faithful advisors were Mrs. Bourne and Mr. Schmidt, who really guided us, and we had a swell time with them. This year we felt a self-confidence we had never before feltg we were seniors and ready to go on our own. The Juniors presented us with a wonderful prom which we all enjoyed enormously. After the usual graduation ceremonies, we the class of '47, with the knowledge we have accepted throughout our high school days, shall move on to greater heights in a world of peace. . THE END I Sixty-Nine 1 ' 1 Senior Class Prophecy Time has surely flown. Here it is 1957 already. We decided to take a trip around the world after meeting accidentally in Radio City, New York. While we were there, we found Lola Dami the featured pianist with the Hour of Charm program. We also met Betty Lou George, who had replaced Evelyn and her magic violin. We took off via American Air Lines the next morning for Chicago. After we left the airport in Chicago, we decided to take a stroll down Michigan Boulevard. Suddenly we were pulled into a building and were told that we were in the midst of a gang fight between Junior Coffman and Joe Balderas. After recovering from the shock, we headed for the nearest cocktail lounge. While having a cocktail, we happened to glance down the bar and see J. D. Bennett guzzling beer! We later found out that he owned the place. The bartender was our old friend Chester Billups. We decided to spend the night at the Stevens Hotel. When we regis- tered, we found the clerk was none other than our old school chum, Jack Audas. The bellboy then took us to our suite. At .first we did not recognize that he was Bobbie John. We rang for tea, and the maid Who brought it turned out to be Mavis Blasingame. She had just arrived from Firebaugh. After a few minutes we heard a knock at the door and opened it to find Perry Luallin, who was hunting for Bill Goforth, the famed automobile manufacturer. Perry had wrecked his taxicab and was hunting Bill to get a replacement. The next day We went to the motorcycle races. Owen Atkins was star racer, and Howard Ricks came in second. That night We went dancing. Dave Mumby was featured with his drums, and Lura Flock was featured soloist. Also part of the entertain- ment were Ruby Hornbeak and Eula D. singing torch songs. I Seventy 1 Next morning we left via Constellation for Los Angeles. At the air- port in Burbank we met Richard Maron, who was preparing to test his new rocket. He had just finished building it, and he asked us if we would like to accompany him on the initial flight. Frankie Vincent was to pilot the ship. As we flew around the moon, we saw Bill and Barbara. Bill had given her the moon. We also saw Stewart Fountain, who was a general in the Moon Corps. Fred Bartlett was serving under him there. Ed Geis was in the guardhouse for trying to capture a star. Richard decided that the rocket had been out long enough, so we zipped back to Lockheed Field. P Hearing that there was a super game in the Los Angeles Coliseum, we rushed over. Playing football there on the West Point team were Odell Lingerfelt, Williard Sullivan, Joe Antonetti, Bill Cantrell, and Johny Dennis. The next morning we left by Pan-American Clipper for Hawaii. Flying low over Dos Palos, we noticed Elzie Zeestraten teaching chemistry in Dog Patch. We passed by too quickly to see what had happened to Prof. Arriving in Honolulu that evening, we decided to visit the famous Flamingo Club. Betty Sousa was in the floor showg her specialty was hula dancing. At a table near ours, we noticed Pearl Buie with a Very attractive man. Of course we dashed over to chat, and she informed us that she was his secretary. 1 On our way to our hotel, we noticed two men painting by lamplight. They were Andy Carey and Stanley Lopez, painting flies on a billboard. The next morning we went to the office of Hawaiian Pineapplesvg we thought we would take some pineapples with us when we left. In the If Seventy-One 1 lf office we found the secretary, who we discovered was Jerri Andrews, and her assistant, Imogene Donaldson. They asked us to wait for the owners, who were Harry Hanson and Bill Jones. They told us we would have to go to the plantation for the pineapples. When we arrived there, they intro- duced us to the foremen, Dan Test and Bruce Sargent. We found Vernon Houk relaxing on the veranda of the ranch house, eating pine- apples. The next day we left for Japan. There we met General Bob Burkhart, who was commanding the Allied Armed Forces. Rod Gourley was Arn- bassador to Japan from the United States. Next, a brief stop in Burma. In Rangoon we ran into Markeith Harris and Doug Warnock, who were outfitting a safari to go into the hill country for big game. Next we headed-for Paris. We flew over a sheep ranch in southern France and saw Freda Haile and her French husband. We flew low and waved to them, but since they were speaking in French, we couldn't make out what they were saying. In Paris we visited the fashionable shops to pick up a dud or two . We were surprised to find that Betty Hoffmayr had set up a dress- designing establishment, located between those of Schiaparelli and Alix. She was out-selling them both. We also met Vetrus Boyer, nee Boydstun, with her husband, on their second honeymoon. Before leaving Paris, we met Louie Maumoynier, in a night club in Montmartre. He had given up his bashful title for man about town. Then we left for London. The stewardess on our plane handed us a newspaper, from which we learned that Joanne Cantrell had just swum the English Channel. I Seventy-Two 1 In London we attended a girls' baseball game. It seems Mary Martin had become a feminine Babe Ruthg she was attempting to introduce the sport to English girls. Mary Vincent led the band onto the field during the game. Bernice Fonseca was water girl for the Bronquettes. We also noticed Gerald Greenfield in the grandstand eating sunflower seeds. By now it was time to catch our plane for New York. After brief stops in Ireland and Newfoundland, we arrived at La Guardia Field- three tired people, Geri McCracken, a news commentator gathering ma- terial for a new book, Betty Ricci, who had flown to Europe to join the Shaggs for a reunion, and Mae Puccinelli, who just went along for the ride. When We checked in at the Waldorf, we found a message from Jim Reynolds, now Secretary of Interior, inviting us down to Washington to attend a special session of Congress.
