I N MEMORIAM Mr. Douglas The student body and faculty of Dormont High School have felt a great loss in the passing of our able administrator and friend, Mr. John F. Douglas. By most of the students, Mr. Douglas was thought of as more than a principal, they considered him a man who was devoted to helping each individual student. Few pupils will ever forget the tremen- dous cheering and applause Mr. Douglas received in 1959,when 'he of- ficially became our principal, and few will forget the solemn silence that filled the gymnasium and halls after school on April 27, 1961. Though he was with us at Dormont for a short time, his work as an educator will continue to live in the minds of the boys and girls who were inspired by his guidance and his faith. 4 i......-..-,.M, m.,.,-Mm,A, MMM, Ats, NM t MM! All phases of high school are included. Both seniors and underclass- men receive due recognition. Those who participate in activities from sports to music will also find their interests described within the pages of the annual. The Torch is prepared in several sections, under the general direc- tion of Miss Jane Harris. This year's editor-in-chief is Janet Traynor, the senior class editors, Judy Sodie and Cindy Stitt, the underclass editor, Janet Nugent, the activities editor, Bruce Larson, the sports editor, Don Beach, and the photographer and art editor, Douglas Peck. The Torch staff has expended much time and effort to prepare this publication. lt is hoped that this year's Torch truly represents th e achievements and hopes of the student body. Traynor, B. Beach, D. Peck. TORCH BUSINESS STAFF The business staff of the Torch is also of great importance. Under the guidance of Miss Beryl Kel- ler, the business staff is responsible for the financial and clerical details of the book's production. To the business staff also falls the weight of encourag- ing the sale of the Torch to D.H.S. students, and the selling of advertising space. The students on the business staff make and plan a budget 'within which the editorial staff must operate. Naturally the Torch's accounts must also be balanced and kept in order. The business staff is perhaps as vitally neces- sary to the Torch as is the photography and literary work. P. Hogben, K. McGibbeny, P. Buck, M. Coutz, L. The night has come at last, and with it the thousand hopes and heart- aches of vaudeville or Broadway. Glamour and gilt mixed with easy laughter make a world apart of backstage with its painted faces, iumbled propers, and bravado. It's a shimmering, thrilling world that ends abruptly at the curtain's starkness in the realm of the stage Iight's wide sweep. its Carol l.. Adelsheimer Michael A. Babyak Joseph H. Batterby Lois M. I x -4 40 YEAR'S END ACTIVITIES 4'I SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS This year's senior class officers have proven themselves very worthy of the responsibilities connected with leading the Senior Class. These officers, along with the untiring efforts of the senior guardians, Mrs. McFaden and Mr. Spence, worked throughout the year ap- pointing committees and organizing the various senior activities. The confidence shown by the seniors in their class elec- tion was iustified by the efficiency with which the officers carried out their du- ties. Because of the importance of events such as a successful prom and a smooth and memorable commencement program, many thanks go to these leaders. D. Forbrich, Vice-president, Jack Schilling, President Gretchen Hyde, Treasurer Nancy Heckler, Secreta ry. 42 Mrs. McFaden Mr, Spence NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The select group of Juniors and Seniors who compose the National Honor Society membership at Dormont High School are chosen each year on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character and service. The total senior membership is ten per cent of the senior enrollment. Five per cent are chosen at the close of the iunior year, and the remaining five per cent are chosen at the end of the senior year. The group is selected by a faculty committee of senior report room and subiect teachers. The names of the members are announced each June at the Senior Awards Assembly, SENIOR SNAPS 43 26 Owwll I ! ! BACCALALIREATE The 1961 Baccalaureate Service, held in the Dormont High School gymnasium began at 8:00 p. m. on the evening of Sunday, June 11, as the Senior Class of 1961 proceeded to the accmnpaniment of Handel's Processional, Largo, After they reached their seats, the audience rose for the Invocation, which was delivered by the Reverend Harold Uhl of the Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church. The audience then remained standing to sing Faith of Our Fathers. The scripture, taken from Joshua 24, was read by Mr. Louis Holzer of the Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. The Reverend Uhl also offered the prayer, which was followed by Bach's hymn, To Christ Our Peace ls Owing, sung by the A Cap- pella Choir. The talk, A Big Word-Service, was given by Dr. James T. Orr from the Dormont Presbyterian Church. Following this inspiring talk and a hymn sung by the audience and students, the service was brought to a close by Mr. Holzer, who gave the Benediction. Thus ended a very inspiring and memorable service, with the hopes that those thoughts would somehow add to the strength the seniors will need to face the future, 46 CCDMMENCEME T On June 12, 1961, the high school band began to play Pomp and Circumstance as the Class of 1961, in their blue and white caps and gowns, marched out onto the field of Dormont Memorial Stadium to begin the commencement exercises. For the first time at a Dormont commencement program, the teachers wore hoods with varying colors. Each color designated the college from which the teacher graduated, his maior field of study, and the degree which he had received. The theme of the ceremony was The Role of Education in Teaching Man's Responsi- bility Toward Himself, Toward Society, and Toward God. Drew Har- vey, valedictorian, spoke first on Man's Responsibility Toward Himself, presenting the ways in which a high school education helps man fulfill this responsibility. The second speech, Man's Responsibility Toward Society, was delivered by .lack Shilling, valedictorian, Nancy Heckler, salutatorian, gave the next speech, Man's Responsibility Toward God. Dr. Donald McGarey, Professor of Education at Pennsylvania State Uni- versity, addressed the graduating class. As the commencement pro- gram ended, the senior class marked the end of four rewarding years of high school. 47 Senior AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF FRENCH TEACHERS Certificate Margie Sharp BAND Letters Joan Carter Donna Glausser Lewis Groover Cheryl Helms Marilyn Larnmert Jo Linda Mays Charles McKinney Marvin Smith Margie Sutch Marilyn Beck Judy Bodine BASKETBALL Letter Larry Brown Tom Fascetti Mike Griffin Denis Markley Fred Moravec Jay Mucha Carl Rizzo Jack Schilling BAUSCH AND LOMB SCIENCE AWARD Certificate 8- Medal Jack Schilling Jay Mucha CHEERLEADERS Letter at Certificate Judi Crombie Marcia Harnish Candy Nash Lula Petousis CHOIR Emblem Don Anderson Joanne Bald Don Beach April Bryant Jean Bryant Joan Carter Don Davies Patricia Davis Linda Grant Marlene Gratzer Barbara Harshbarger Nancy Heckler Carol Kestner Diane Lorenz Jill Phillips Charles McKinney Rayna Ruben Rose Savchak Marvin Smith Louisa Soukup Cindi Stitt wards COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMITTEE OF PITTSBURGH RAI LROADS Jack Schilling FOOTBALL Letter larry Brown Gary Danner Bill- Comfort Richard Forbrich Denis Markley Fred Moravec Carl Rizzo Fred Schindler Jim Williams Certificate Orlando Gualtieri Ed Bryan Jack Schilling Don Beach Dick Jones Don Anderson Charles Hecht FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA Certificate Rosemary Fabiani Katharyn Hall Margie Sutch GIRL'S ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Letter Judy Bodine Gloria Bridge Judy Steving Certificate Sandy Byron Judy Kuntz GYMNASTICS Emblem Donald Beach Charles Hecht James Williams William Yee HOME ECONOMICS OUTSTANDING SENIOR Trophy Gretchen Hyde BETTY CROCKER CONTEST April Bryant JUNIOR ENGINEERING TECHNICAL SOCIETY Medal Robert Boyd Jack Schilling LIBRARY AWARD Certificate Patricia Blosevich MATHEMATICAL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA Dick Forbrich QUILL AND SCROLL Dormonitor Despina Bolaris Joan Carter Jean Daube Karen Esch Ed Glick Marcia Hamish Sue Hartlep Drew Harvey Sheldon Lauderbaugh Diane Lorenz Gary Ripple Judi Steving Mariorie Sutch .lim Williams Current Events Award Drew Harvey QUILL AND SCROLL Torch Don Beach Bruce Larson Janet Nugent Judy Sodie Cindi Stitt Janet Traynor RIFLE Letter Robert Beadling Phillip Schauweker SCHOLASTIC ART AWARDS Medal Joe Catalano Keys Joan Carter Joe Catalano Jim Williams Certificates Joan Carter Joe Catalano Marian Clifton Bruce Larson Jo Linda Mays Lula Petousis Robert Sands Marvin Smith Judy Suhy James Williams UNDERWOOD AWARD OF MERIT Katharyn Hall 48 TENNIS AWARDS Letter Tom Hart Dale Martin Bill Pini TRACK Letter Don Beach Larry Brown Gary Danner Dick Forbrich Denis Markley Jay Mucha Jim Undereiner Carl Rizzo Certificates Ed Bryan Bill Comfort Jerry Zaremba USHERS' CLUB Certificate Gordon Bloom John Feth Drew Harvey Tom Hart Jeff Hunger Sheldon Lauderbaugh Dave Ohnsman Phil Schauweker WRESTLING Letter Lee Dale Don Davies Charles Hecht Ryan Kennedy Jim Williams Jerry Zaremba Certificates Bill Comfort Orlando Gualtieri Sheldon Lauderbaugh Dick Jones SERVICE AWARDS Don Beach Marilyn Beck Larry Brown Joan Carter Jean Daube Dick Forbricll Michael Grif in Drew Harvey Nancy Heckler Gretchen Hyde Denny Markley Fred Moravec Jay Mucha Candy Nash Lula Petousis Gary Ripple Carl Rizzo Edward Rudaitis Jack Schilling Margie Sutch Janet Traynor Jim Williams NATIONAL HONOR Joanne Bald Donald Beach Larry Brown Joan Carter Robert Cobun Jean Daube Rosemarie Fabiani Louis Forbrich Harry Graff Katharyn Hall Andrew Harvey Thomas Hart Nancy Heckler Bruce Larson Dennis Markley John Mucha Gary Ripple Jack Shilling Judith Suhy Mariorie Sutch Janet Traynor Cynthia Zabowski SOCIETY M55 g V 49 11-26 Mrs. Dau ROW 3: W. Their efforts were not in vain, for they produced a suitable record of 2-3 in a league where stiff competition prevails. Most of the boys now look forward to next year where they will further perfect their ability. FRESHMAN BASKETBALL Hard work and diligent practice pro- duced an even season for the freshman basketball team, finishing the season at 8-8. Under the direction of their coach, Mr. Gorman, the freshman practiced each night during the season from 5:30 to 7 p. m. perfecting playmaking, shoot- ing technique, and team work in gen- eral. The boys with their freshman bas- ketball experience will be a fine core of next year's J. V. basketball team. George B. Narcolli CHEERLEADERS' CLUB The Cheerleaders' Club under the sponsorship of Miss June Watson and Mr. William Reed, teaches girls old and new cheers and their accompanying motions. The primary purpose of the club is to teach physical coordination, good sportsmanship, and, above all, to promote stronger school spirit, which is essential to a victorious team. The lnterclass Basketball games are popular because they give all the girls a chance to try for a position as a cheer- leader for class teams. In May the Varsity cheerleaders are chosen from the girls who have attended at least seventy-five per cent of the meetings for two years. Those girls who live in Castle Shannon and do not attend Dor- mont High until their sophomore year may try out at the end of the year if they meet the requirements. Among the duties of the Varsity Cheerleaders is the informal instruction of Cheerleaders' Club members. The Cheerleaders' Club is an excellent way to support Dormont High School in all its athletic com- petition and to enhance social friendships. J. Crombie C. Nash L. Petousis, Captain PEP CLUB Pep Club is a new organization at Dormont High School this year and has been very popularly ac- cepted. The idea for such a club was formed by some seniors who felt the need for something that would arouse more school spirit among students. For a new organization, the club has had a fine show of membership. The members meet frequently to learn to make use of school songs and cheers. When at- tending sport events, namely the basketball and foot- ball games, they aid the cheerleaders in urging our teams on to victory. The club has already achieved a portion of its goal by encouraging students to buy and wear DORMONT buttons. The group originated the idea of maroon and gray pom-poms for adding color to group cheer- ing at the football games this year. More enthusiasm at pep rallies can also be partially attributed to this club. Thanks to the sponsorship of Mrs. Carol Adelshei- mer and leadership of the cheerleaders and club president, Judie Sodie, the Pep Club has launched a successful beginning for increased school spirit in the years to come. Clerihue BAND AND MAJORETTES Under the capable leadership of Mr. Mel Rush, the Dormont High School Varsity Marching Band continues to provide the very best of entertainment in the form of original and complex programs dur- ing the half-time periods at all Varsity football games. Highlighting the band's performances are the majorettes, who must be commended for the creativity which they demonstrated in the planning of eighteen completely original routines. The real novelty of this year's season, however, is the thrill- ing performances of the head maiorette, Marilyn Beck, as she bravely twirled flaming batons in very difficult routines of her own ingenuity. The band and maiorettes also represent Dormont High School at the Memorial Day Parade. When football is out of season, this versatile group takes on new duties as it is converted into the concert band and the dance band. Both provide music throughout Varieties and Musicale as well as other school functions. All stud- ents of the high school with some musical ability are welcome to try out for the Varsity band, and af- ter three years students actively participating are eligible for letters. Donned in their school colors, maroon and grey, the band contributes to the fine school spirit which is so vibrant in the student body of Dormont High School. Through the efforts of Mr. Mel Rush, Dormont played host to the 'I96'l District Bank under the direction of Colonel William F. Santelman. GIRLS' ATHLETIC CLUB The GirI's Athletic Club is a very popular activity at Dor- rftont High School. All girls, from freshmen to seniors, are wel- come. Interest in sports and physical fitness are the only re- quirements. Each year officers are elected to co-operate with their sponsor, Miss Katherine Gianoutsos, and to help her arrange the neces- sary schedules. This year the officers are Karen Bridenbaker, president, Cheryl Chapman, vice-president, and Judie Steving, secretary. The purpose of GAC is to give girls a chance to participate in athletics and to make them appreciate good sportsmanship while working as a team. An annual event such as the Twirp Twirp which is held in the fall, is a girl ask boy dance. In the spring the club holds a Play Day. On that day girls from other schools participate in different sports at our school. GAC mem- bers often visit other schools also. A girl may earn either a certificate for 400 points or a letter for 500 points. These points are gained by attending the meet- ings, putting away the equipment, and through athletic competi- tion in basketball, volleyball, tumbling, softball, and soccer. GAC seeks to improve a girI's personality through sports and activities. M. Henderson, K. Bridenbaker, C Chapman, and J. Steving enioy a G. A. C. meeting. 80 ,,,,.,1aI-X. PAINT CREW Dormont High School is very fortunate to have an active, industrious group to paint the scenery which adds so much to our various programs and activities. The Paint Crew is selected from the students in Mr. William Reed's art classes. Each spring they take over the huge task of creating the scenery for Va- rieties. Their imaginative work should certainly make Dormont proud of this hardworking group. STAGE CREW The hardworking young men of the Stage Crew, under the direction of Mr. William Reed, deserve credit as the unseen heroes of Dormont High School's musical productions and social functions. There are no major qualifications for membership except hard work and an eagerness to build, construct, design, and later dismantle the scenery frames. Membership is open to all who are interested in education. This year the club officers were as follows: Rose- mary Fabiani, president, Margie Sutch, vice-presi- dent and program chairman, Taffy Hall, secretary treasurer. Movies, guest speakers, group discussions and an annual trip to a college provides a varied program on the fourth Thursday of the month. Each year, two delegates are sent to the state convention. So- cial activities include a covered-dish dinner in the fall, a tea at Christmas time, and refreshments served at the regular meetings. ROW 5: M. J. Patterson, T. Bremer, B. Bougher, S. Fraelich. LIBRARY CLUB The Library Club was formed for the purpose of ac- quainting its members with the library and helping Mrs. Marjorie Lauder, the school librarian and club sponsor. lt is difficult at first to learn exactly what the various duties behind the desk entail, but with practice and ex- perience- the girls become accustomed to the duties that keep the library functioning properly. Such duties in- clude carding and shelving books: marking books, pamphlets, and magazines for circulation: and handling the various slips that make their way into the library. The Club's outstanding activity this year was the Book Tea held in the library for the purpose of ac- quainting the teachers with the sources of various read- ing matter. A 1 , ,, ,W , W ROW 5: V. THE JUNIOR ENGINEERING TECHNICAL SOCIETY The Junior Engineering Technical Society, bet- ter known around Dormont High School as the JETS , is one of our newest and most interest- ing clubs. It was formed in order to stimulate interest in the various fields of engineering and to enable students to learn more about these many programs. The JETS Academic Unit Plans, furnished by the national office form the basis for their many activities. Some of their other interesting programs are visits to engineering offices and colleges, engineering proiects and discussions on other topics that are basic to the engineering fields. The JETS are early birds, meeting eve ry Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. under the direc- tion of Mr. Dennis Koutavas. We feel that the capable officers of the JETS , Robert Boyd, President, Douglas Peck, Vice President: Walter Buchhagen, Secretary: and George Melis, Treas- urer, have done a great iob of making this new club a vital link in Dormont's extra activities. 86 NURSES' CLUB Nurses' Club was organized last year for those girls, or even boys, interested in nursing as a career. At first open only to seniors, it is now open to any junior or senior, thus increasing its size. The club was not too successful in its begin- ning year, but this year, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Reese, the members have greatly in- creased the club's position among the other extra-curricular activities. Representatives of the club have attended the Nurses' Club Con- vention at Harrisburg and the Mount Lebanon Ward Home for Children. All members par- ticipated in the visit to the Nurses' Club at Bethel High School and enioyed hearing the gu est speakers that visited the Nurses' Club at D.H.S. this year. The club meets twice a month to discuss its plans and goals, which include visits to hospitals, planning parties for institutional children, and, in general, doing anything that will enlighten the girls on the field of nursing. SCIENCE CLUB One of the newest additions to Dormont High School's list of extra-curricular activi- ties is Science Club. Science Club offers students who show an interest in science as a possible career or as simply an interesting high school course a chance to be exposed to some more advanced science practically applied to everyday life. An amazing as- pect of this club is the remarkable amount learned through student participation in- stead of through a series of advanced lec- tures by teachers. Under the direction and guidance of Mr. William J. Comensky, stu- dents who have had the benefit of learning some new phase of science or some new technical skill will share their knowledge with other club members. Through discussions, in- formal lectures, and on-the-spot demonstra- tions, members learn from their colleagues. Members also willingly give up their spare time in order to take field trips, which serve to enhance their scientific background and increase their knowledge of the world in which they live. Each individual student in the school, through his own report room re- presentative, has a voice in the school government. The senior report rooms each have two delegates to the coun- cil and every underclass report room has one. Working in co-operation with the administration, through their able consultant Mr. Michael Babyak, the Student Coun- cil is constantly attempting to initiate new and varied pro- grams which will add to the betterment of our school and student body. This year, Larry Brown, president of the Student Coun- cil, and his other fine officers, Dennis Markley, vice- president, Brenda DelVecchio, secretary, and Peggy For- cus, treasurer, have taken up the reins of their task and are certainly doing a commendable job. Among the Student Council's many proiects has been the annual magazine campaign, which is sponsored to earn various benefits for the school. As usual, a squad of hall guards has been provided to keep order during the lunch periods. The council members have also en- deavored to discourage littering the halls of our school and the streets of our community. The report room representative is always anxious to discuss the work of the Student Council with any inter- ested student. Our student government is a vital link between the administration and faculty of D.H.S. and the student body. D. Markley, L. Brown, P. Forkus, and B. DelVecc'hio discuss Student Council activities. DORMONITOR The Dormonitor staff works efficiently during the year to keep the students and faculty of Dormont High School well informed and up to date on current school events and activities which are of interest and importance to them. Once a month throughout the academic school year they publish the school paper, The Dormonifor, which has been commended for its excellence and literary merit. The staff is composed of students from all four classes who have successfully passed a competitive test given by the editorial director of the paper, Miss Martha Morrow. These reporters work together diligently meeting deadlines and capably performing all the vital little things essential to the publishing of a good newspaper. ln re- cognition for their outstanding contributions to this school publication, the senior members of the staff are eligible for the Quill and Scroll Award. Along with the editorial staff must be remembered the business staff under the direction of Miss Eleanor Onest, which works side by side with their editorial counterpart in helping The Dormonitor achieve success. ple, J. Both seniors and underclass- men receive due recognition. Those who participate in activities from sports to music will also find their interests described within the pages of the annual. The Torch is prepared in several sections, under the general direc- tion of Miss Jane Harris. This year's editor-in-chief is Janet Traynor, the senior class editors, Judy Sodie and Cindy Stitt, the underclass editor, 'Janet Nugent, the activities editor, 'Bruce Larson, the sports editor, Don Beach, and the photographer and art editor, Douglas Peck. The Torch staff has expended much time and effort to prepare this publication. It is hoped that this year's Torch truly represents th e achievements and hopes of the student body. Traynor, B. Under the guidance of Miss Beryl Kel- Ier, the business staff is responsible for the financial and clerical details of the book's production. To the business staff also falls the weight of encourag- ing the sale of the Torch to D.H.S. students, and the selling of advertising space. The students on the business staff make and plan a budget within which the editorial staff must operate. Naturally the Torch's accounts must also be balanced and kept in order. The business staff is perhaps as vitally neces- sary to the Torch as is the photography and literary work. 90 ROW 3: M. A. Board, L. Dale, Miss Keller. ROW 2: M. Potts, K. McGibbeney, P. Buch, K.
