Today we use this word to refer to the sermon delivered to the graduating class at commencement. The Baccalaureate Service for the Class of 1959 was held on Sunday, May 31, at eight olclock in the school gymnasium. The service was opened with the Processional played on the piano by Carol Treschow and Don Gillespie. The audience stood while Reverend james T. Orr gave the invocation and while the hymn, Faith of our Fathers, was sung. Reverend Harold J. Uhl then read the scripture, Isaiah 6: 1-8, and Reverend Orr offered a prayer. The anthem, Worship, was sung followed by the deliverance of an inspiring sermon entitled 'AHopes and Chains by Charles R. Wolf, D.D. George Espy, the student director, lead the choir in the singing of Praise We Sing To Thee. A hymn was then sung, and the benediction was given by Reverend Uhl. The D.H.S. A Cappella Choir gave a Choral response which ended the ceremony. Our baccalaureate service, which was solemn and impressive. should have a personal meaning to every member of the graduating class. Were Meaningful and Solemn Events On june 2. 1959. at eight o'clock in the evening. the Class of 1959 graduated in the Dormont High School Stadium. Dr. Will Orr from Westminster College addressed the graduating class. The theme of the ceremony was In What Direction Is Our Education Moving? Dorothy Boord. Roberta Fellabom. and Marijane Grabe gave speeches related to this question. They reminded us that education is not an end result. but a way of living. People who contend that edu- cation is a preparation for living do not stop to think that we have been living since the day of our birth. Education is a broad term which includes more than book learning. A good definition of education is the acquisition of attitudes. Dr. William De Witt Hyde. former president of Bowdoin College, once stated the aim of education to be the following: To be at home in all lands and all ages: to gain a standard for the appreciation of other men's work and the criticism of one's own: to carry the keys of the world's library in one's pocket: to make hosts of friends among the men of one's own age: to lose one's self in generous enthusiasms and cooperate with others for common ends. and to form character.. . Our reach should exceed our grasp. thus making our success all the more greater. The members of the Class of 1959 would be wise to often reflect upon these ideas which were stressed at our commencement. They are the basis for a better life. TORCH STAFF As the school year progresses, members of the Torch Staff are busy gathering and record- ing the events which occur in the life of Dor- mont High School. The preparation of the year book is an extensive assignment since every student is included within its pages. The Torch is a permanent record of scholastic achieve- ment and extracurricular fun. The story of a year at school is told in pictures and in print. In later years it may recall the many events which were enjoyed in high school. Students who comprise the Torch Staff try to present Dormont High School through its seniors and underclassmen, as well as through its assemblies and shows. Section by section the Torch Staff has prepared various articles and pictures of classes, organizations, and clubs. including many interesting, informal action shots. However, before the book is ready to print, members of the staff must engage in many interviews with both the advisors of school organizations and prospective advertizers. The students who write and edit the Torch endeavor each year to publish a new and original book which may be a credit to Dormont High School. Their work has not been in vain, for the 1956 and 1957 yearbooks received Second Class honor rating, and the 1958 Torch received First Class honor rating from the National Scholastic Press Association. .LJ Row 3: B. VARIETIES COMMITTEE The Varieties Committee, headed by Miss Watson, performs a vital role each spring. Stu- dent members are selected from each school department, and teachers are also members. It is the Varieties Committee which annually solves the difficult question, What will the Varieties theme be this year? It begins work- ing in the fall, building the Varieties Show around the chosen theme. Next, it reviews all the acts which have been submitted, making changes and suggestions so that no two acts are alike. The decisions are difficult, for the best acts must be chosen in order to limit the show. The committee also discusses costumes, music, and lighting. Suggestions for scenery are given and definite decisions are made. Little credit is ever given to this important group which works so hard in making the Varieties a huge success - , . , 1, . . M. Row PAINT CREW The paint crew endeavored to follow the general theme of Varieties. Pittsburgh's past, present. and future. Sketches of various acts and parts of 1959 Varieties covered the gym- nasium entrance. A huge showboat bellowing smoke from its two smoke stacks on either side of the cabin was reminiscent of the days when Pittsburgh was thriving on river trade. To the left were represented some aspects of Pittsburgh's histori- cal heritage and past. This left wing of the scenery featured the lives of sturdy frontiers- men braving the dangers of a pioneer's life and attacks by savage Indians. Vividly pictured was the paint crews' conception of Pa Pitt. Opposite this, Pittsburgh's glorious future was symbolized' by towering skyscrapers reaching into the sky. .1 Joe Magarac stood on the right in the red glare of Pittsburgh's steel mills, which are the back- i wp? bone of our city and the prime reason for her R BSESOD T Bryant Row greatness- The Varieties scenery tied the show together and presented the theme of the production in a form which was appreciated by everyone. The act opened during the colonial days at which time men were considered to be very fashionable in coon-skin caps and buckskins while the women wore homespun dresses. Appar- ently the minuet was all the rage. Later in the 1890's Grand- pa wore a handle-bar mustache and did the waltz with Grand- ma. Finally, in the 1940's the people began to look more mod- ern and they even began to jitterbug. The act closed with the Rocka Conga and suppos- edly every day people. M Row 2: M. Sharp, J. Nolle, S. Finale Celebrates Dormont's Anniversar Varieties was the climax to a year of practicing and training for the tumbling team, one of the featured parts of the pro- duction. This year the act opened with two pairs of tum- blers going through a comical routine.
