The D.H.S. 1958 Basketball Team, although finish- ing tifth in the league, played much better ball than their record indicates. The players were relatively small in stature as compared with those on the opposing teams, yet their overwhelming spirit and hustle made them into a good competitive team. At the start of the season they were severely weakened by the loss of veteran Art Montgomery, and again in mid season by the loss of Tom Beggan. Nevertheless, they fought hard and made a good showing. Boston English 41 at Dorchester 43 The season's opener with English proved to be a close and exciting game in which Dot came out the victor. High men were George Fuller, 10 points and Art Montgomery, 9 points. Boston Trade 42 at Dorchester 54 Dot knocked off a weak Trade team without too much effort. Rick Bates chipped in 16 points and Frenchie Maimaron 13, to lead Dot's scoring. Dorchester 58 at Boston Latin 62 In their first appearance in a hostile gym, bolstered by the return of Gary Wilson and Captain Jack Mc- Ghee, Dot rallied late in the game, trying desperately to tie the score, but the rally fell 4 points short and the victory went to Latin. The high scorers were Rick Bates with 20 and Gary Wilson with 17. Technical 60 at Dorchester 82 Led by Gary Wilsonis 32 points, the boys hit for 82 points and the season's best showing. Billy Murphy did a great job in rebounding. The team finally showed their ability. Dorchester 72 at B.C. High 74 On the short end of a big score by only 2 points, Dot gave powerful B.C. High quite a scare. Rick Bates led the charge with an amazing 44 points. Dot was neck and neck with B.C. going into the final three minutes when a Dot foul was disputed and a technical called on top of it, resulting in the gain of 6 points for B.C. High, which cost us the game. Bates, 44 points set the high scoring record of the year for any Boston player. Memorial 76 'at Dorchester 53 Facing their traditional rivals before the home crowd, Dot battled very well in the first two periods, keeping the score close. At the start of the third period, Me- morial opened up and didn't let up until their victory was assured. Gary Wilson was high scorer with 17 points. Tom Beggan
