Foley-off to the races! The first league game took place under the lights against a powerful Tech. team. D.H.S. fought hard and paced the Technicians to a 6-0 lead with an eye-catching run by Barney Foley. The boys in the second half, because of lack of substitutes, saw two touchdowns scored against them. The final score, 13-6, was not a defeat, for it served to spur the team to work and play harder. The men from Dunbar superbly conquered a weak Trade team by trouncing them 31-7. Charlie Bunker, the outstanding player of this game, ran for two touchdowns and threw to Beggan for another. Dick Dauksys, on a quarterback sneak, plunged over from the 4. Bob Foley on a power play raced off right tackle for the final touch- down. McGhee made the conversion. Gotauco-on his way! 74 After a victorious season in 1956, Head Coach Jerry Buckley wondered if he could do as well in 1957 minus five of the start- ing linemen. With the aid of new Assistant Coach Frank Tracy, Buzzy Allen fformerly of the University of Mass.j and the team,s veteran backfield, the school watched with interest the 1957 football season. In a pre-season encounter at White Stadium, the- backfield got a chance to show their running ability by shutting out Jamaica Plain 12-0 in the Jamboree. Passing Whiz', Bunker scored off left tackle early in the first period with a run of 25 yards. Foley in the second period plunged off left guard and raced 33 yards for the second touchdown. A ilu-ridden Dorchester team defeated Hyde Park in a see-saw game, which gave some of the inexperienced players a chance to show their skill. After a score- less first period, Bunker, early in the second, hurled a perfect strike to Beggan, who ran the distance to post a 6-0 lead. Passing Whiz Bunker again connected to his other end, Livingstone, who boosted the score to 12-7. McGhee made the con- version. In the fourth quarter with sec- onds left to play Dick Brooks took the ball from the 5 and scored standing up. At this point in the game the score was tied 19-19. McGhee kicked the ball through the uprights and put D.H.S. ahead 20-19. Although Foley did not score, his keen blocking on offense and hard tackling on defense was a key factor in the outcome of the game. D.H.S.,sparked by the 4 Dorchees,' next played in sub-freezing weather under the lights, an optimistic English squad.
