With only two starters returning to the varsity, Coach Jerry Buckley built one of the finest teams in the city. Dorchester proved this in their first start. Be- hind Charlie Bunker's three hit pitching, they defeated Latin 5-2. The big break of the game was a three-run triple by Bob King. In their next game out, Dorchester came up with a new left-hander, Dave Ferguson. Dave proved to be a big help throughout the entire season. In his first start, he defeated English. Even though they were happy with this victory, Dorchester lost Bob King because a spec- tacular catch caused him to dislocate his shoulder. Dot continued its winning ways for the next eight games, but, as all good things, it came to an end. This good thing ended with Dave Ferguson pitching his and Dot's first loss. They dropped the game to English High. -Wfmrchester staged a spectacular three-run rally in the inning. but couldn't get the equalizers. M their next game, Charlie Bunker lost the first game a,,,. 0? his high school career to Trade, 2-1. The final City League game of the year saw Dorches- ter defeated by Roxbury Memorial. The fabulous Dot team lost the city title by two percentage points. They were scheduled to a make-up game with Memorial which was rained out. Dorchester went into the state tournament with high hopes, but they lost the first game to Somerville. Char- lie Bunker made a brilliant but fruitless attempt to win. Before we close the book on Dot's baseball team, we have a few tributes to pay: First, to Ed Wadman, the city's best second baseman. It was his first varsity season as a starter, and he proved more than worthy both in the field and at the plate. We congratulate him on being named to the City All-Stars and earning honorable mention for All-Scholastic. Next, we salute Tom Beggan. Tom played varsity for three years, and was one of the finest catchers in the history of the school. He always came through when the team needed someone to hit. Tom also deserves con- gratulations on being named to the City All-Stars and being on the honorable mention list for All-Scholastic. Finally, we give a very special salute to Charlie Bunk- er. When Charlie pitched his last game, it was the end of an era for Dot. He was a one in a million ball- player. Bunker could not only pitch, but he also car- ried one of the biggest bats in the league. An entire book could be written to him and about him. The best tribute that we can pay, perhaps, is to say that Charlie is a star both on the field and off. For the second year, we congratulate him for being named to the City All- Stars and the All-Scholastic Team. To every man on the team who assisted in keeping up the fine traditions of Dorchester we extend our sin- cere congratulations. The tryouts for cheerleading were held, and those in our class who vere lucky enough to be voted in were Margaret Blaney, Claire Law- on, Dianne Kelly, Judy Barrasso, Peggy McLean, and Joni Cusenza. We left for our summer vacation pleased with the rumor that Miss Tlorence Magner was to be our Class Sponsor. 1956 - 1957 As Juniors we were not reluctant to return to school in September, 956, for we were well acquainted with the building, had many riends, and anticipated good times as upperclassmen. We came into prominence when, for the first time, our class was epresented on the staff of The Dunbar Chronicle by Margaret Mc- .ean, Janet Prout, and Mary Ann Anderberg. Also, two of the iliicers of the Student Council were from our class: Judy McPhee, fice President, and Gail Cederlund, Secretary. In November, a serious assembly was held to pay tribute to Mr. Francis L. Ford, an English teacher, who had passed away during he summer. Other assemblies were the traditional Christmas Pageant, pep-talk on Junior Achievement, and a concert presented by Mr. oseph Trongone, featuring both classical and popular music. 65 1955 - 1956 Arriving as Sophomores in '55, we were bewildered and confused with the idea of finding our way to our classes in such a large building. Perhaps as confused as we were the new faculty members. They were Miss Florence Magner, Miss Christine Lyons, Miss Sona Tahmizian, Miss Anna Cussen, Mr. Paul Carlin, and Miss Kathleen McCarthy, our school nurse. In the field of sports, the school football team, al- though not the best, did creditable work. The basket- ball team brought us a City Championship, they entered the Tech Tourney, where they competed very well, but were eliminated in the first game. The hockey team, with the help of their new coach, Mr. John Best, came through very well in the inter-school meets. Another City Champ for Dot was the baseball team. The fore- cast of good things to come was shown by the splendid playing of Charlie Bunker, Bob Foley, Chico Gotauco, and Paul Costello. In February, we had a chance to show our ability by participating in the Talent Show held to raise money for scholarships for the graduating class. Many Juniors participated in the Talent Show, which was the last our music instnictor, Mr. Francis Burke, directed before his retirement. 'fFashion Fanciesv in March was a gala event, at which the modeling tech- nique showed up not only that of the girls, but also that of the boys. The athletic teams did their best during the year, as it was Mr. William f'Bill', Pendergast's last year as head coach, after serving in that position at D.H.S. for 39 years. Mr. Jerry Buckley, his assistant, became head coach. Miss Florence Magner ofiicially became our Sponsor. She instigated a class bulletin, 'fDot Dashf' to acquaint us with the doings of our class. In February we got off to a good start in class mat- ters when we put in our orders for class rings to be received in June. Early in June we held Junior Week, in which the campaigns and elections for senior oiiicers were conducted. After the excitement of slogan posting throughout the school and of speech making, those elected were Dick Dauksys, President, Herb Faulkner, Vice President, Paul Kelly, Industrial Vice President, Janet Prout, Secretary, and Claire Lawton, Treasurer. And so we ended our second year with many of our senior duties already under way. OUPCW c 5690? teacher and friend was to take Miss Magner's place. In October, Miss Lyons asked for volunteers to serve on the Class Day, Prom, and Activities Committees. There was such an over- whelming response that at first she was in a dilemma but she even- tually put everyone to work. During that month, an interesting innovation took place. It was the Shop Safarisf' in which the senior girls, in groups of sixes were escorted by Industrial boys through their shops. Our girls were enlightened by the mysteries of their work. In return, the gjrls invited the boys to a lunch prepared by the cooking classes. ln November, as a money raising project, we were asked to display our salesmanship ability by selling boxes of greeting cards. Y SPX P9 X S90 September of the year 1957 was a red letter month because we officially became Seniors of D.H.S. At our first class meet- ing on September 18, Miss Magner an- nounced that she would no longer be our class sponsor, the reason was that she was to be in charge of the school program planning. We later learned that this as- signment was really a promotion. The big task of being class sponsor was assigned to Miss Christine Lyons. Although we felt a letdown by this resignation, we were delighted to find that such a wonderful MARDI GRAS DANCE Later, D.H.S. pennants and pencils were put up for sale. As for honors achieved by our class, Peggy McLean won third prize in a city-wide essay contest on Selling as a Professional Career, and Bill Shiver represented the school on Student Government Day at the State House. Later in the month, several class members broadcasted the Safety Program at WORL under the leadership of Miss Grace Whittaker, the new head of the English Department and good friend of the Seniors. We found the year, however, not all 'gplayv as a good proportion of the class took the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, College Scholastic Apti- tude Test, State Teachers College En- trance Exams, Exams for Nursing Insti- tutions, and College Entrance Board Exams to say nothing of many individual application tests. Many social activities took place from January through June. First, the Home and School Association sponsored a Mardi Gras Dance for us on February 18 at the Walsh Post. Dick Tellier and his band provided the musical beat. In March, several Seniors from the college course took part in the Student Exchange Program. Five students from St. Patrick's High School in Watertown, visited D.H.S. Class Day on May 8 was the last time the Class of '58 met ofhcially in the school building. At a very impressive ceremony Mr. Gibbons accepted the class gift and offered a few words of wisdom as guide-posts for our future. Barbara Furness, the Yearbook Editor, presented copies of Highlights 1958 to Mr. Gibbons and Miss Magner. Composer Dick Dauk- sys introduced his class song. The Class Marshals were James Dunlop and Doro- thy Runge, who led the processional and recessional march. After we had eaten well, the light-hearted part of the pro- gram included the reading of the Class Will by Bill Shiver, the Class History by Margie Blaney, the presentation of the l'Mostl' Awards, and the distribution of our long-awaited yearbooks. The grand finale of our Senior Year took place at Symphony Hall on June 5 at 2 P.M. In the presence of our parents, our faculty, and our friends, we were awarded our well-earned diplomas. Our high school days came to an end with the strains of our Class Song while we, facing in, formed an unbroken circle, a symbol of our lasting fellowship. Margaret Blaney ALL STARS S E X will 0 and then, with the five from D.H.S. went to a luncheon given by the Mayor. The D.H.S. students attended a town meeting in Watertown on March 17. The Home and School Association, with the help of Dorchester's leading stores and a modeling school, sponsored HFash- ion Fancies, a show in which both students and teachers modeled. In April, a skit was performed by seniors on the dols and don'ts of Prom Night. In early Spring the athletic teams concluded the basket- ball, hockey, and track season and started the baseball schedule. Many Seniors enjoyed these games. The Senior Prom was held on May 2 at the Blue Hill Country Club. The music was supplied by Ken Keeves. The girls and boys were pleasantly surprised to receive as favors pendant-pins for the girls and lapel buttons for the boys. The first league game took place under the lights against a powerful Tech. team. D.H.S. fought hard and paced the Technicians to a 6-0 lead with an eye-catching run by Barney Foley. The boys in the second half, because of lack of substitutes, saw two touchdowns scored against them. The final score, 13-6, was not a defeat, for it served to spur the team to work and play harder. The men from Dunbar superbly conquered a weak Trade team by trouncing them 31-7. Charlie Bunker, the outstanding player of this game, ran for two touchdowns and threw to Beggan for another. Dick Dauksys, on a quarterback sneak, plunged over from the 4. Bob Foley on a power play raced off right tackle for the final touch- down. McGhee made the conversion. Gotauco-on his way! 74 After a victorious season in 1956, Head Coach Jerry Buckley wondered if he could do as well in 1957 minus five of the start- ing linemen. With the aid of new Assistant Coach Frank Tracy, Buzzy Allen fformerly of the University of Mass.j and the team,s veteran backfield, the school watched with interest the 1957 football season. In a pre-season encounter at White Stadium, the- backfield got a chance to show their running ability by shutting out Jamaica Plain 12-0 in the Jamboree. Passing Whiz', Bunker scored off left tackle early in the first period with a run of 25 yards. Foley in the second period plunged off left guard and raced 33 yards for the second touchdown. A ilu-ridden Dorchester team defeated Hyde Park in a see-saw game, which gave some of the inexperienced players a chance to show their skill. After a score- less first period, Bunker, early in the second, hurled a perfect strike to Beggan, who ran the distance to post a 6-0 lead. Passing Whiz Bunker again connected to his other end, Livingstone, who boosted the score to 12-7. McGhee made the con- version. In the fourth quarter with sec- onds left to play Dick Brooks took the ball from the 5 and scored standing up. At this point in the game the score was tied 19-19. McGhee kicked the ball through the uprights and put D.H.S. ahead 20-19. Although Foley did not score, his keen blocking on offense and hard tackling on defense was a key factor in the outcome of the game. D.H.S.,sparked by the 4 Dorchees,' next played in sub-freezing weather under the lights, an optimistic English squad. After the Dunbarians recovered a bad punt on the opponents' own 40 yard line, Bunker put the ball on the 30. In three plays the crowd saw Bob Foley eat up enough yardage to put the ball on the 3, where Dick Dauksys plunged over on a quarterback sneak to put D.H.S. out in front 6-0. The third period saw English score on a lucky break and to lead 7-6. That was to be about all for English, for again Foley took the ball and on 3 plays scored from 30 yards out. An insurance TD was made by Dick Dauksys, who from 10 yards out swept his right end and barreled over for his second tally of the game. McGhee made the conversion and the final score was D.H.S. 18, Eng- list 7. Keymen on defense were Co-Capt. Gotauco, McClintock, and Costello. A capacity crowd saw D.H.S. blank undermanned Roxbury Memorial 27-0. In the first half of the game there was no score because of the stubborn ground re- sistance ofthe underdog Memorial. The third quarter saw better play as Bunker threw to Costello, who made a circus catch in the end zone. D.H.S., two plays after receiving a punt from their rival, sent Bob Foley on his way. Bob, from 20 yards out, shook loose from the second- ary and eluded the Memorial pursuer. In the fourth period, after battering the weary Memorial line, Fuller scored from one yard out. The final touchdown of the season was made as Dick Dauksys on an option play kept the ball and lunged over from 6 yards out. The 1957 Season showed D.H.S. util- ized its speedy backfield and powerful line in the capturing of the City Cham- pionship. Dick Dauksys Dauksys-the hard way! In the seventh game of the series Dorchester came from behind in the last four minutes in a thriller to score a 19-14 win over B.C. High at White Stadium. D.H.S. led at halftime 7-0 on Dick Dauksys' touch- down in the second period. The third period saw Bunker completing a 43 yard bullet-like pass to Foley, who sprinted into the end zone un- divided. To the dislike of D.H.S., B.C. High scored 2 touchdowns in this'period to put them ahead 14-13. But the spirit and drive of our team did not falter, with four minutes left in the last period, Bunker jetted 35 yards over left tackle to score the final touchdown and put the game on ice for Dorchester. In the next game the Red and Black did it again. A highly favored Latin team was upset by a small but powerful antagonist. Statiscally and by way of score D.H.S. utterly demolished the high-spirited Latins. D.H.S. shed blood early in the middle of the second period but retaliated with a 23 yard pass play from Bunker to Chico Gotauco, putting the ball on the 3. Dauksys bulled over to tie the score. McGhee's golden toe made the placement and put D.H.S. ahead. In the second half D.H.S. fought harder and more valiantly to keep its 7-6 lead. Larry McGinnis, Barney Foleyf' Jack Mad- en, and Paul Rennie played a commendable part on the defense, their effort and stamina was a key factor in the outcome of this game. A 34 yard-Dauksys-to- Chico -pass clicked to put the ball on the Latin 16. Charlie Bunker took the ball from there, and on the second play he sprinted unaided for the second TD again. McGhee was called to the scene to boost the score 14-6. 75 Bunker-Almost alone! Smile! Livingstone being hauled down! if 5 iw He's on his way! :ii U' T D bound! Fuller receiving a block! The D.H.S. 1958 Basketball Team, although finish- ing tifth in the league, played much better ball than their record indicates. The players were relatively small in stature as compared with those on the opposing teams, yet their overwhelming spirit and hustle made them into a good competitive team. At the start of the season they were severely weakened by the loss of veteran Art Montgomery, and again in mid season by the loss of Tom Beggan. Nevertheless, they fought hard and made a good showing. Boston English 41 at Dorchester 43 The season's opener with English proved to be a close and exciting game in which Dot came out the victor. High men were George Fuller, 10 points and Art Montgomery, 9 points. Boston Trade 42 at Dorchester 54 Dot knocked off a weak Trade team without too much effort. Rick Bates chipped in 16 points and Frenchie Maimaron 13, to lead Dot's scoring. Dorchester 58 at Boston Latin 62 In their first appearance in a hostile gym, bolstered by the return of Gary Wilson and Captain Jack Mc- Ghee, Dot rallied late in the game, trying desperately to tie the score, but the rally fell 4 points short and the victory went to Latin. The high scorers were Rick Bates with 20 and Gary Wilson with 17. Technical 60 at Dorchester 82 Led by Gary Wilsonis 32 points, the boys hit for 82 points and the season's best showing. Billy Murphy did a great job in rebounding. The team finally showed their ability. Dorchester 72 at B.C. High 74 On the short end of a big score by only 2 points, Dot gave powerful B.C. High quite a scare. Rick Bates led the charge with an amazing 44 points. Dot was neck and neck with B.C. going into the final three minutes when a Dot foul was disputed and a technical called on top of it, resulting in the gain of 6 points for B.C. High, which cost us the game. Bates, 44 points set the high scoring record of the year for any Boston player. Memorial 76 'at Dorchester 53 Facing their traditional rivals before the home crowd, Dot battled very well in the first two periods, keeping the score close. At the start of the third period, Me- morial opened up and didn't let up until their victory was assured. Gary Wilson was high scorer with 17 points. Tom Beggan Dorchester High School saw this season its best track team in over ,., .rm . . 4' f. r.,, J... Y ,M . K , :E ten years. After coming in victorious against Brighton in the opener we and again against Charlestown, Dorchester waxed cold and lost, by a small margin, to Jamaica Plain. In the Division III Meet, however, Dorchester made, in its best performance of the year, a terrific rebuif by romping against Brighton, Charlestown, and Jamaica Plain. No wonder! With such stalwart socii as Captain John King, the Division Ill 600 yard champion, Bob O'Brien, the Division III 50 yard dash champion, and Pishkin, a sophomore, the 880 yard champ, victory was inevitable! On March lst, competing against all the public high schools in Boston, Dot placed poorly in the Regimentals. It should, however, be taken into account that some of the schools had squads up to three times as large as Dot's. The best scorers were Charles Bunker, Dewey Belanger, Paul Nugent, James O'Malley, Bernie Piscapo, and Jer- mont Washington. For taking the time to coach the team, credit should be given to Mr. William Pendergast. nl... ,,,,,-,LMA-TM Albert Sinkys W . CROSS COUNTRY With such stalwarts as Gary Wilson and Leo Coughlin, D.H.S. had a season unprecedented in its cross country history. The team, which consisted of Gary Wilson, Steve Wilson, Al Sinkys, Bill Roach, Paul Nugent, Lee Coughlin and Buzz Cummings, made a fair show of their ability to cope with all the rigors of coursing across the greens of White Stadium. 'Though it placed last in the triangular opener against Latin and Tech, the Red and Black placed second in the next meet against Memorial and Charlestown. In the City Meet, Dot placed fourth with Gary Wilson coming in second out of one hundred and fifty boys. Because of the flu, the team was incomplete in competing in the Reggies. Roach, Coughlin, and Steve Wilson valiantly participated. Also most of the team was out with the ilu in the State Meet. Gary Wilson, however, despite a previous bout with the ilu, scored an unexpected triumph by being the first one to break the tape. Credit should be given to Mr. William Pendergast, the stout- hearted coach of the team, who was always a bulwark of inspiration. Albert Sinkys Q. Fizasr Row: Coach Frank Tracy. HOCKEY! v. ,, 'HMB H, ., - 6 Gi ff .gi w' 1f?i I Hockey Highlights The Dorchester Hockey Team was fortunate in having its first line made up almost entirely of veterans. The team, working under Coach Frank Tracy was as follows: Gerry Hammond guarded the nets and later switched to defense, Harry Wright took over as goal tender, Joe Sullivan and Captain Paul Costello were on defense, Billy Flaherty centered between Paul Guiney and Bob King. The second line men were veterans Billy Sullivan, J ack Connolly and Henry Son. Gus McKinnon and Larry Murphy were on defense. The third line was made up of a fast rising scoring line with Bob Connolly, Bill Fleming and Les Connoughton up front, and Gordon Buckley and Jim Higgins backing up with Ronnie Morgan as a new goalie. Dorchester 2 - Latin 1 Dorchester held off Latin whose strong and fast shooting was menacing until the third period when Latin made hay of our mistakes. Uncoordination of the Hrst line, and the usual difficulties of the game led to a loss. The sharpshooters were Paul Guiney assisted by Joe Sullivan, and Billy Flaherty assisted by Paul Guiney and Paul Costello. Dorchester 1 - English 2 In Dorchester's second encounter English was almost taken by Dot's faster and harder skating club. Still not at full strength, Gerry Hammond did a fantastic job in the nets backed by Larry Murphy and Gordon Buckley. Paul Guiney scored with Billy Flaherty assisting. Dorchester 0-Technical 8 Without the services of Captain Paul Costello, Dot lost to a strong Technical High. Dot fought all the way but just couldn't click. Joe Sullivan played an out- standing game but in vain. Dorchester 2 - Trade 5 Many penalties lost this game for Dot, chiefly due to lack of completed passes. However Bob King hit the corner with Billy Flaherty assisting, and Flaherty tallied another goal with Paul Guiney and Billy Sullivan as- sisting. Dorchester 2 - Memorial 2 In our tilt with Memorial, over confidence and poor shooting that was about an inch off brought us to a tie with Roxbury. Bill Flaherty and Bob King played a good defensive game, with Harry Wright taking over in the net and doing a fine job. Paul Guiney slipped one by the Memorial goalie, shooting in his own rebound assisted by Bob King and Billy Flaherty, Jack Connolly, assisted by Gus Son and Larry Murphy whizzed another goal in the upper right hand corner. Dorchester 3 - English 4 Starting out its last time around, Dot, without the services of Billy Flaherty and Paul Costello, almost upset a favored English team. Everything clicked for Dot including the back checking. Bob King tallied twice for Dot assisted by Paul Guiney and Joe Sullivan, and Paul Guiney slapped one in with Gordon Buckley and Gus McKinnon picking up the points but this good playing did not bring us victory. Dorchester 0 - Trade 4 Misconducts were the turning point in what otherwise might have been a good game. Paul Guiney and Gus McKinnon played a decisive part in this game, for they held off the Trade attacks. Dorchester 1 - Latin 2 The team played without Bob King and Paul Cos- tello. Dot's passing clicked and they almost took another favored team. J ack Connolly and Billy Sullivan played an excellent game with Billy Flaherty soloing in to score. Dorchester 1 - Technical 9 The whole team played together for the first time since its first game. However they lost to a faster team -the future champions of the City League. Paul Cos- tello, Paul Guiney and Joe Sullivan played well. Bob King fired one from the blue line for Dot's lone goal. Dorchester 3 - Memorial 2 In its last game of the season, Dot outplayed Me- morial by a vast margin, paying off for Dot in a big way. Everything worked well and Harry Wright did a fine job as net minder. After catching the spark, Dot took the lead and never once gave it up. The team's scoring took place in all three periods with Paul Guiney being the big gun for Dot. Guiney scored twice with Bob King and Paul Costello assisting on one and Joe Sullivan and Paul Costello assisting on the second. Billy Flaherty scored the third with Jack Connolly and Gerry Hammond assisting. Our sincere gratitude goes to the cheerleaders and Frank Tracy for a wonderful year. Every man on the team was pleased to hear that Paul Guiney was picked to play on the Boston City All-Stars.
