of our class were fortunate enough to attend thus gala affaur Graduatuon was on June 4 at Symphony Hall The gurls on the Junuor Councul and Hugh Honor Roll were Gardenua Gurls, assustung at the Commencement Exercuses Coached by Mr Pendergast and Mr Buckley Dorchester, as usual, dud well un the athletuc fueld The football team funushed vuctoruous un uts last game after a slow start Our skullful hoopsters had an II I record makung them cuty champs and contestants un the Tech Tourney The hockey team came through very well wuth the assustance of Mr Best theur new coach The baseball team won the cuty champuonshup and went on to the state tournament The track team made up for uts small membershup by nts outstandung work, placung many boys un the unter school meets In June nomunatuon papers for Senuor Class Offucers were guven out to uunuor candudates un antucupatuon of the elec tuon un the fall We left school hopefully to begun our last hugh school summer vacatuon, knowung that each July and August day brought us closer to our senuor and funal year I956 I957 Wuth the eagerness and excutement that us typucal of all hugh school senuors we returned to D H S on September I3 A change un the day s schedule greeted us unstead of the usual seven peruods, the program was reduced to sux wuth an Actuvutues Peruod on Tuesday and Thursday Thus unnovatuon proved pleasant to us because we were allowed more tume for extracurruculars and we felt the day went faster As we were happy un our senuor year, so were we sad The death of Mr Francus L Ford came as a shock to many of us Mr Ford had been a popular member of the Englush Department and Luterary Advusor of the Yearbook Movung memorual servuces for hum were conducted at a later assembly In October the aspurants for Senuor Class Offucers got off wuth theur campaugns to an early start Candudates were seen un the corrudors puttung up sugns and posters the contest was on Rewarded for theur untegruty and popularuty, he followung students were chosen offucers Presudent, Ruchard Remmes Vuce Presudent, Marcua McGunnes Secretary Evelyn McDonald and Treasurer, Arthur Alba Completung the roster, a Senuor Councul was chosen and the Yearbook Staff was selected November proved to be an excutung month wuth many actuvutues The Dgnb-gr Chgqflugk came out everyone was delughted wuth the new style of the paper whuch had more pages and puctures expertly arranged by the staff Next came a serues of poluo unnoculatuons, guven wuthout charge to students who had receuved theur parent's consent Rememberung the prevuous epudemuc, the mauoruty of students were grateful for the offer Later un the month the cheerleaders dusplayed theur abuluty un a competutuon at Dedham Hugh School and enloyed a record hop held un that school gym Durung the Thanksguvung Recess the wealthuer members of our class vusuted New York Cuty Under the guudance of Muss Twomey and Muss Lyons, they stayed un New York for one day and vusuted the Unuted Natuons and Ra duo Cuty Toward the end of the month our furst class meetung was held At thus turrue we were guven tentatuve dates for the Prom Class Day and Graduatuon, and plans were made for these events In early January the furst sectuon of the Yearbook went to press and the commuttees to wrute the Class Wull and Prophecy were chosen On January I2 many Senuors took the furst of varuous examunatuons to qualufy them for scholarshups and entrance unto college We enuoyed a dance, sponsored by the cheerleaders, at the local Y M C A on January I6 The remaunder of the year was a whurl of actuvuty and gay confusuon whuch all of us enloyed For the furst tume, Dorchester Hugh was permutted to partucupate un a Student Exchange Program, sponsored by the School Commuttee F f teen students from the college preparatory classes were selected to make arrangements for the Exchange Day wuth Wey mouth Hugh on March 4 Fuve senuors were chosen to be on the actual exchange commuttee whule the other ten were as sugned to the commuttee receuvung the guests or the commuttee plannung the forum A fashuon show, entutled Color scope Fashuons For the Modern Muss was presented on February 5 by Sumplucuty Pattern assusted by the gurls of the Home Economucs Classes as models The long awauted Talent Show was held on the nught of February I5 The students worked hard an co operatuon wuth the teachers to present a delughtful performance of sungung, dancung, comedy skuts, and pan tomume acts On March I4 the Home and School Assocuatuon, wuth the assustance of Dorchester's leadung shops the Dorchester Argus Cutuzen Newspaper a professuonal modellung school, and the women s edutor and fashuon program con sultant of the local newspaper Mrs Betty Goodman, presented Fashnon Fancues to aud the Scholarshup Fund The gurls were dazzlung un the costumes presented, as were the boys who modelled punk tuxedoes and bermuda shorts Throughout the seasons, the athletuc teams showed outstandung abrluty The football squad played uts best to achueve a 6 2 record puttung them un the Cuty League s thurd place Dorchester s basketball team had a 9 3 record, thus cap turung the Cuty League s second place These sharpshooters also held the dustunctuon of nettung the most pounts per season of beung the only team to hut over 90 un two games, and of beung the top scorers un theur league Captaun Paul Carey was 63 . . . . . , . Class Prophecy- 57 I breezed unto Boston on June I2 I967 not havung been un the bug cuty sunce my graduatron from Dorchester Hugh School un I957 I bought a Boston Globe and settled down to see what was doung To my surpruse I saw a full page spread advertus ung the Fabulous Amateur Curcus to be staged by the Class of I957 of D H S for the benefut of the swummung pool to be an nexed to our Alma Mater Fulled wuth enthusuasm at beung able to see my classmates, I read on to duscover that CONROY and HOLMES professuonal curcus men were coachung the productuon I rushed to the telephone to call PAT ROWAN who had been my closest fruend She was more than delughted to hear that I was able to attend thus gala affaur wuth her She had al ready planned to meet JUNE ZAHKA and JACKIE BURKE at the Boston Garden where the curcus was to take place Several hours later I was delughted to meet my fruends who I found were employed as secretarues to umportant men un the John Hancock Co We cpprocched the hckef boofh where we saw pretty as ever MARCIA McGIN NES and lovable as ever MIDGE MacDONALD sellung tuckets Near the sude show sectuon we were greeted by RICHARD REMMES Iookung most pros perous The gurls told me later that he was the executuve of the Natuonal Mutshaw Bank From a dustance we heard a loud vouce callung Come One Come All advertusung the famous Calypso Dancers Wuth great curuosuty we followed hus vouce and upon comung closer saw that the barker was DAN O CONNOR Surroundung hum were DORIS MURPHY MARY NAUGHTON CATHY POWERS JO MOONEY and PEGGY NOLAN who ut turned out were wuves of promunent doctors and who stull luke to do dance routunes for fun A luttle farther behund a stand I saw TOM NUGENT sellung lemonade As I walked towards hum, I saw DON DEMPSEY boostung dugnufued BILL MONROE up to look unto the tank of lemonade to see uf the guuce was as good as that manufactured by hus concern Contunuung our tour of the sude shows we came to the anumal pens where DAVID CAHALANE BILL KOIVU and RONNIE ADAMS were feedung the elephants My pals were amused to see thus truo of Boston clothung salesmen tendung anumals Near by good natured FRANCIS CURRAN had the 'ob of holdung the crowd back for TOMMY BOULOS was about to walk unto the Iuons cage These tasks were quute dufferent from theur dauly 'obs as assustant managers for Jordan Harsh Co WALTER JOYCE BILL KELLEY and JOHN DONAHUE were brushung the coats of the horses soon to perform theur equestruan act whule BRUCE MCCORMACK JOHN MCLAUGHLIN, and AL CERONI were urgung theur wuves to pat the anumals at a dollar a stroke Much to our surpruse we learned that they were all graduates of Tharvard College and held promunent posutuons un the socual world as well PAT YONAKER JO HODGMAN and RUTH JOHNSON were dressung the trauned dogs for theur act In real Iufe these gurls dressed themselves every day to go to theur well paud 'obs un the Gas Co We strolled unto the mud way to buy some refreshments and bumped unto a crowd from Benson Clothes Inc Among them I recognuzed Manager PAUL CONNOLLY hus assustants BILL COSGROVE and JOE DOOLEY head bookkeepers VIRGINIA CZUPRYNA and ROSEMARY DETOMA and head salesman SMILY JACKMAN They were rushung to encourage JOHN SINDONI who was takung the part of a sword swallower and was beung untroduced by RONNIE SMITH, a well known auc tuoneer about town Gay costumes and nouse drew us to a nearby platform where HELEN KALLIS was Ieadung SHIRLEY WALLACE, MAUREEN CURRAN BARBARA SWEENEY and NANCY FAHEY un a Hundu dance sumular to one whuch she durected un the Talent Show un I957 The gurls were now housewuves devoted to theur famulues Among theur vuewers were PAUL TONER DANNY WALSH JOHN DECHELLIS BOB FITZGERALD, MANUEL MIUNO, and DAN MOSEL all professuonally connected wuth TV A flame from the next platform caught my eye and I rushed to loun the crowd watchung the fure eater RICHARD PUGSLEY To see hus nonchalance no one would suspect he was the father of truplets whose mother watched the feat wuth fear and tremblung O hus rught was GEORGE NIAKAROS the famous tattooed man Hus tattoos had been paunted on by FRANCIS LAMONTAGNE Boston s famed artust and wunner of SI 000 pruze offered at the Art Festuval ln the crowd that assembled were RON NIE MAN SON BOB CANNATA MARVIN KINDLE JOE KILBANE and JEAN PERRY, graduates of Columbua Unuversuty and students of Van Doren Down the mudway JOHNNIE WELCH was puttung on a uugglung act He must have been practucung hus stunt for months because hus assustants BERNIE KENNEDY ALBERTA LaMARCA ANGELA KREST JACQUELINE MURPHY and CAROL DaSILVA dressed un brught red costumes, passed hoops balls wands and covers wuth great rapuduty and he never fauled once All for the cause dud I learn thus truck he saud cheerfully to the amusement ofa crowd of Chucago resudents who had flown un none other than the former DOLORES LYNCH SHIRLEY LLOYD PAT MADSEN and PEGGY SHEEHAN accom panued by the Stockyard executuves THERESA FARRELL PAUL MURPHY, and JOHN MORELLI It was tume to enter the bug tent we were seated un the front row by CHARLIE BARRASSO, usherung un a gold suut who now was the owner of the Strand Theater un Dorchester The band played the Natnonal Anthem durected by WILL DALEY and sung by RITA MacLELLAN She had receuved specual permussuon from Northeastern Aurlunes where she us stewardess, to have tume off from her
