By PAT DALTON The present phase of our educatuon has come to an end Whule some of us wull contunue on to college, others wull begun a career ln euther case, we graduates wull treasure and carry through lufe s lourney many memorable events at Dorchester Hugh School D H S 57 us pruvuleged to be the furst class to complete uts three years of educatuon at Dor chester as a co-educatuonal school Let us revuew some of the occurrences of these three all too short years 1954 1955 In September 1954, we started our hugh school educatuon as sophomores under the durectuon of Dr Dorothy M Lyons Quute unexpectedly Dr Lyons was transferred to the Jeremuah E Burke Hugh School, and Mr John T Gub bons was appounted our head master Mr Gubbons was formerly head of the Scuence Departments of Dorchester for Boys from 1936 1944 and of Brughton Hugh School from 1944-1954 At hus furst assembly our new pruncupal stressed punctualuty and co-operatuon as essentuals for a furst class school 1954 1955 brought many changes that uncluded the transfer to other schools of Mr John Desmond, Mr Ral Wel lungs, Muss Florette Tremblay and Muss Margaret O Hare, and the assugnment to our buuldung of the Musses Helen Burns, Agnes Denehy, Aluce Dunegan, and Mrs Mary O Keefe From the athletuc pount of vuew, Dorchester had a fune year Coached by Mr Pendergast, the football team fun ushed the season wuth fuve wuns, two losses, and one tue The Buckleymen soared to the top of the Basketball League wuth the assustance of two sophomores who made the furst team James Devun and Paul Carey Wuth natural curuosuty throughout the year we So omores watched the Senuor actuvutues and were thrulled to be un vuted to partucupate un a number of school events Among these were the annual Talent Show and the heart warmung Chrustmas Assembly presented by the students under the durectuon of Mr Burke, our musuc Instructor The members of our class who offered theur talents to help make these affaurs successful were Lorraune Muddleton, Glorua Hull and Al ma Susco Many of us attended our furst D dances un January and Aprul and a few of the lUCkIer SOph0m0reS enloyed 1955 we envued them, not realuzung our turn would come all too soon 1955 1956 Well acquaunted wuth D H S , we Junuors really enloyed returnung after the summer vacatuon Because of a seruous poluo epudemuc the openung of school was postponed untul September 22 Regardless of thus delay, we were not long un gettung back unto the swung of thungs School started hummung wuth socual actuvutues ln October the Senuor Class Electuons were held We Junuors were lust as enthusuastuc about the electuons as the upperclassmen because we knew that the followung year ut would be our pruvulege to choose class offucers In November the furst ussue of the Dunbar Chronucle was publushed Thus was the occasuon when we Junuors had our furst chance to be on the staff The Chrustmas holudays were heughtened by an as sembly presented by the members of the Student Councul and by the furst D Dance of the year Unexpectedly the spurut of the season was darkened by the sudden death of Mr Gerard M Deeley All of us wull long remember Mr Deeley, a member of the Mathematucs Department and the Coach of the Boys Hockey team Memorual servuces were later held un the school audutoruum for thus departed teacher and fruend Returnung from the Chrustmas vacatuon, we learned that there was much actuvuty un store for us Antucupatung the hustle and bustle of the future senuor year, we were advused to organuze our class early therefore, under the durectuon of Muss Helen F Burns our Class Sponsor, we elected a Junuor Councul George Stevens, Chaurman, and Helen Kal lus, Secretary Treasurer, were chosen as offucers of the Councul Thus group s maun purpose was to plan the pre senuor actuvutues They arranged to have us begun to collect class dues and purchase our class rungs, thus easung the senuor year s expenses When our furst general class meetung was held Muss Burns suggested that we have our puctures taken by the offucual class photographer early preferably durung the summer vacatuon Some of the memorable socual actuvutues throughout the year were the Talent Show, Fashuon Show, Annual Scuence Four, and Forums The outstandung event was the Senuor Prom held at the Hotel Somerset on May 29 Many members 62 o I l Q . s I .
