I Trubutes MR ARLON O BACON Mr Arlon O Bacon graduated un 1913 from the Fitchburg Teachers College He furst taught un Everett, later un Newton then un Provudence On Aprul 1 1924 he was appounted to Pre co educatuonal Dorchester Hugh un Codman Square as a cooperatuve unstructor un undustrual branches Seven years later when the boys were moved to the new Dorchester Hugh for Boys Mr Bacon also made the transfer He was guven the very umportant posutuon of Coordunator of the Cooperatuve lndustrual Course untul hus returement un June 1956 MR MALCOLM D CAMPBELL When the doors of our school opened for the furst tume un September 1925 Mr Malcolm D Campbell establushed humself un Room 314 as the Buology teacher Untul hus returement un June 1956 he was one of the best unformed and ablest teachers un Boston He became Presudent of the Natuonal Assocuatuon of Buology Teachers and of the New Eng land Assocuatuon and held munor posts un other Buology organuzatuons MISS MARGUERITE CON DON Muss Marguerute Condon a member of the Englush Department retured on December 31 1956 Most of her teach ung years were spent at the Dorchester Hugh School for Gurls She luves un Brooklune wuth a suster but she goes to Cape Cod for her vacatuons Many Dorchester teachers have enuoyed her hosputaluty at her pleasant home un Centre vulle near Craugvulle Beach where she enuoys her favorute hobby gardenung MISS ALICE W DINEGAN Muss Aluce W Dunegan recently retured from Dorchester Hugh School where she was a devoted teacher un the Commercual Department She was a graduate of Kemper Hall and Vassar College and receuved her busuness traunung at Summons College Besudes her varued teachung experuence Muss Dunegan worked for many years un the real estate busuness and had extensuve secretarual experuence MR JOSEPHT EVANS Mr Joseph T Evans who retured un November 1956 was for many years a Commercual teacher un Dorchester Hugh School Mr Evans was a graduate of Boston College Hugh St Anselm College and Bryant 8. Stratton Mr Evans Cowboy Evans Returement does not mean unactuvuty for Mr Evans He has turned a lufe long unterest un antuques and wood workung unto a busuness that occupues hum dauly and lets hum contunue to serve hus fellow man MR STEWARTJ SHAW Stewart J Shaw was born un Phuladelphua and went to Ashland New Hampshure at an early age, and ut was here that he spent hus early school years Hus famuly later moved to Lowell Mass where Mr Shaw graduated from Lowell Hugh and Lowell Textule School after mauorung un enguneerung After completung the Mass Department of Educatuon Teacher Traunung Course he accepted a permanent appountment un the Boston School System un 1917 In October 1925 he became a cooperatuve unstructor and came to Dorchester Hugh School to teach cabunetmakung and to organuze the draftung department He buult thus department up to be the funest un the Boston School System and receuved many commendatuons from cuty, state and natuonal levels MR CHARLESW STAHL Charles W Stahl was graduated from Multon Hugh School un 1914 and started hus apprentuceshup as a patternmaker at the old B F Sturtevant plant un Hyde Park When the coll for volunteers for the furst World War un 1917 came he enlusted wuth the 377th Aero Squadron and served overseas after whuch he returned to complete hus apprentuce traunung Completung the Department of Educatuon Teacher traunung course he accepted a permanent appountment an the Boston School System un 1925 Hus furst assugnment was to the Old Boston Contunuatuon School Hus later assugnments were to Boston Technucal Hugh and Brandeus Vocatuonal School The last three years of hus servuce pruor to hus returement were spent at Dorchester Hugh School where we came to know hum untumately MR STIMSON WYETH Mr Stumson Wyeth was born un Needham and educated un the schools of that town He receuved hus Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Harvard and B U respectuvely He began hus teachung un a Mulutary school later he was teacher and pruncupal of Stoughton Hugh School Followung varuous teachung assugnments he became head of the Modern Language Department at Dorchester Hugh School from whuch he retured un December 1956 to be ap pounted to the teachung staff of Newton College of the Sacred Heart 3 . . - I ' ' ' I . .. . . .. TanG0 z ' fi'- UL 1 'V'-M By PAT DALTON The present phase of our educatuon has come to an end Whule some of us wull contunue on to college, others wull begun a career ln euther case, we graduates wull treasure and carry through lufe s lourney many memorable events at Dorchester Hugh School D H S 57 us pruvuleged to be the furst class to complete uts three years of educatuon at Dor chester as a co-educatuonal school Let us revuew some of the occurrences of these three all too short years 1954 1955 In September 1954, we started our hugh school educatuon as sophomores under the durectuon of Dr Dorothy M Lyons Quute unexpectedly Dr Lyons was transferred to the Jeremuah E Burke Hugh School, and Mr John T Gub bons was appounted our head master Mr Gubbons was formerly head of the Scuence Departments of Dorchester for Boys from 1936 1944 and of Brughton Hugh School from 1944-1954 At hus furst assembly our new pruncupal stressed punctualuty and co-operatuon as essentuals for a furst class school 1954 1955 brought many changes that uncluded the transfer to other schools of Mr John Desmond, Mr Ral Wel lungs, Muss Florette Tremblay and Muss Margaret O Hare, and the assugnment to our buuldung of the Musses Helen Burns, Agnes Denehy, Aluce Dunegan, and Mrs Mary O Keefe From the athletuc pount of vuew, Dorchester had a fune year Coached by Mr Pendergast, the football team fun ushed the season wuth fuve wuns, two losses, and one tue The Buckleymen soared to the top of the Basketball League wuth the assustance of two sophomores who made the furst team James Devun and Paul Carey Wuth natural curuosuty throughout the year we So omores watched the Senuor actuvutues and were thrulled to be un vuted to partucupate un a number of school events Among these were the annual Talent Show and the heart warmung Chrustmas Assembly presented by the students under the durectuon of Mr Burke, our musuc Instructor The members of our class who offered theur talents to help make these affaurs successful were Lorraune Muddleton, Glorua Hull and Al ma Susco Many of us attended our furst D dances un January and Aprul and a few of the lUCkIer SOph0m0reS enloyed 1955 we envued them, not realuzung our turn would come all too soon 1955 1956 Well acquaunted wuth D H S , we Junuors really enloyed returnung after the summer vacatuon Because of a seruous poluo epudemuc the openung of school was postponed untul September 22 Regardless of thus delay, we were not long un gettung back unto the swung of thungs School started hummung wuth socual actuvutues ln October the Senuor Class Electuons were held We Junuors were lust as enthusuastuc about the electuons as the upperclassmen because we knew that the followung year ut would be our pruvulege to choose class offucers In November the furst ussue of the Dunbar Chronucle was publushed Thus was the occasuon when we Junuors had our furst chance to be on the staff The Chrustmas holudays were heughtened by an as sembly presented by the members of the Student Councul and by the furst D Dance of the year Unexpectedly the spurut of the season was darkened by the sudden death of Mr Gerard M Deeley All of us wull long remember Mr Deeley, a member of the Mathematucs Department and the Coach of the Boys Hockey team Memorual servuces were later held un the school audutoruum for thus departed teacher and fruend Returnung from the Chrustmas vacatuon, we learned that there was much actuvuty un store for us Antucupatung the hustle and bustle of the future senuor year, we were advused to organuze our class early therefore, under the durectuon of Muss Helen F Burns our Class Sponsor, we elected a Junuor Councul George Stevens, Chaurman, and Helen Kal lus, Secretary Treasurer, were chosen as offucers of the Councul Thus group s maun purpose was to plan the pre senuor actuvutues They arranged to have us begun to collect class dues and purchase our class rungs, thus easung the senuor year s expenses When our furst general class meetung was held Muss Burns suggested that we have our puctures taken by the offucual class photographer early preferably durung the summer vacatuon Some of the memorable socual actuvutues throughout the year were the Talent Show, Fashuon Show, Annual Scuence Four, and Forums The outstandung event was the Senuor Prom held at the Hotel Somerset on May 29 Many members 62 o I l Q . s I . I . . . of our class were fortunate enough to attend thus gala affaur Graduatuon was on June 4 at Symphony Hall The gurls on the Junuor Councul and Hugh Honor Roll were Gardenua Gurls, assustung at the Commencement Exercuses Coached by Mr Pendergast and Mr Buckley Dorchester, as usual, dud well un the athletuc fueld The football team funushed vuctoruous un uts last game after a slow start Our skullful hoopsters had an II I record makung them cuty champs and contestants un the Tech Tourney The hockey team came through very well wuth the assustance of Mr Best theur new coach The baseball team won the cuty champuonshup and went on to the state tournament The track team made up for uts small membershup by nts outstandung work, placung many boys un the unter school meets In June nomunatuon papers for Senuor Class Offucers were guven out to uunuor candudates un antucupatuon of the elec tuon un the fall We left school hopefully to begun our last hugh school summer vacatuon, knowung that each July and August day brought us closer to our senuor and funal year I956 I957 Wuth the eagerness and excutement that us typucal of all hugh school senuors we returned to D H S on September I3 A change un the day s schedule greeted us unstead of the usual seven peruods, the program was reduced to sux wuth an Actuvutues Peruod on Tuesday and Thursday Thus unnovatuon proved pleasant to us because we were allowed more tume for extracurruculars and we felt the day went faster As we were happy un our senuor year, so were we sad The death of Mr Francus L Ford came as a shock to many of us Mr Ford had been a popular member of the Englush Department and Luterary Advusor of the Yearbook Movung memorual servuces for hum were conducted at a later assembly In October the aspurants for Senuor Class Offucers got off wuth theur campaugns to an early start Candudates were seen un the corrudors puttung up sugns and posters the contest was on Rewarded for theur untegruty and popularuty, he followung students were chosen offucers Presudent, Ruchard Remmes Vuce Presudent, Marcua McGunnes Secretary Evelyn McDonald and Treasurer, Arthur Alba Completung the roster, a Senuor Councul was chosen and the Yearbook Staff was selected November proved to be an excutung month wuth many actuvutues The Dgnb-gr Chgqflugk came out everyone was delughted wuth the new style of the paper whuch had more pages and puctures expertly arranged by the staff Next came a serues of poluo unnoculatuons, guven wuthout charge to students who had receuved theur parent's consent Rememberung the prevuous epudemuc, the mauoruty of students were grateful for the offer Later un the month the cheerleaders dusplayed theur abuluty un a competutuon at Dedham Hugh School and enloyed a record hop held un that school gym Durung the Thanksguvung Recess the wealthuer members of our class vusuted New York Cuty Under the guudance of Muss Twomey and Muss Lyons, they stayed un New York for one day and vusuted the Unuted Natuons and Ra duo Cuty Toward the end of the month our furst class meetung was held At thus turrue we were guven tentatuve dates for the Prom Class Day and Graduatuon, and plans were made for these events In early January the furst sectuon of the Yearbook went to press and the commuttees to wrute the Class Wull and Prophecy were chosen On January I2 many Senuors took the furst of varuous examunatuons to qualufy them for scholarshups and entrance unto college We enuoyed a dance, sponsored by the cheerleaders, at the local Y M C A on January I6 The remaunder of the year was a whurl of actuvuty and gay confusuon whuch all of us enloyed For the furst tume, Dorchester Hugh was permutted to partucupate un a Student Exchange Program, sponsored by the School Commuttee F f teen students from the college preparatory classes were selected to make arrangements for the Exchange Day wuth Wey mouth Hugh on March 4 Fuve senuors were chosen to be on the actual exchange commuttee whule the other ten were as sugned to the commuttee receuvung the guests or the commuttee plannung the forum A fashuon show, entutled Color scope Fashuons For the Modern Muss was presented on February 5 by Sumplucuty Pattern assusted by the gurls of the Home Economucs Classes as models The long awauted Talent Show was held on the nught of February I5 The students worked hard an co operatuon wuth the teachers to present a delughtful performance of sungung, dancung, comedy skuts, and pan tomume acts On March I4 the Home and School Assocuatuon, wuth the assustance of Dorchester's leadung shops the Dorchester Argus Cutuzen Newspaper a professuonal modellung school, and the women s edutor and fashuon program con sultant of the local newspaper Mrs Betty Goodman, presented Fashnon Fancues to aud the Scholarshup Fund The gurls were dazzlung un the costumes presented, as were the boys who modelled punk tuxedoes and bermuda shorts Throughout the seasons, the athletuc teams showed outstandung abrluty The football squad played uts best to achueve a 6 2 record puttung them un the Cuty League s thurd place Dorchester s basketball team had a 9 3 record, thus cap turung the Cuty League s second place These sharpshooters also held the dustunctuon of nettung the most pounts per season of beung the only team to hut over 90 un two games, and of beung the top Mater Fulled wuth enthusuasm at beung able to see my classmates, I read on to duscover that CONROY and HOLMES professuonal curcus men were coachung the productuon I rushed to the telephone to call PAT ROWAN who had been my closest fruend She was more than delughted to hear that I was able to attend thus gala affaur wuth her She had al ready planned to meet JUNE ZAHKA and JACKIE BURKE at the Boston Garden where the curcus was to take place Several hours later I was delughted to meet my fruends who I found were employed as secretarues to umportant men un the John Hancock Co We cpprocched the hckef boofh where we saw pretty as ever MARCIA McGIN NES and lovable as ever MIDGE MacDONALD sellung tuckets Near the sude show sectuon we were greeted by RICHARD REMMES Iookung most pros perous The gurls told me later that he was the executuve of the Natuonal Mutshaw Bank From a dustance we heard a loud vouce callung Come One Come All advertusung the famous Calypso Dancers Wuth great curuosuty we followed hus vouce and upon comung closer saw that the barker was DAN O CONNOR Surroundung hum were DORIS MURPHY MARY NAUGHTON CATHY POWERS JO MOONEY and PEGGY NOLAN who ut turned out were wuves of promunent doctors and who stull luke to do dance routunes for fun A luttle farther behund a stand I saw TOM NUGENT sellung lemonade As I walked towards hum, I saw DON DEMPSEY boostung dugnufued BILL MONROE up to look unto the tank of lemonade to see uf the guuce was as good as that manufactured by hus concern Contunuung our tour of the sude shows we came to the anumal pens where DAVID CAHALANE
