Hn.. -. ..,,,. we-.--1---m.-.4 f--,.-.,.,.-.N -.- The USS Donner is a dock landing ship designed to load combat troops and equipment, small amphibious craft and vehicles, transport them across oceans, and launch them ashore. The ship is so designed that it can render docking and repair services at sea or in port to small ships and craft. Donner can easily fit into her roomy well-deck three utility landing craft QLCUQ or eighteen mechanized landing craft QLCMD. The ship can carry and operate as many as 15 heli- copters. however, on routine maneuvers, she carries only four to six. When more than two helicopters are on board, the forward end of the well-deck becomes a hangar for maintenance and stowage of these air- craft. H . 4 i ii 1.1 i gi fjdlq-443' fi Seventy-two feet wide and 458 feet long, Donner draws 18 feet of water, and can do 15 knots. Aside from her regular crewmembers, the ship has berthing spaces for about 175 troops. Built by the Boston Naval Ship- yard fMassachusettsj during World War II, Donner was first put in commission on july 31, 1945. After four years of service she was decommissioned and moth- balled in Charleston, South Carolina. LCDR Dellinger was commissioned an Ensign in the Naval Reserve upon completion of Officers Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island, on 1 june 1956. He subsequently served until August 1959 on board USS PHILLIP fDDE 498j in the successive billets of Second Division Officer, First Lieutenant, ASW Officer and Gunnery Officer. Following two years of inactive duty he returned to active service as an instructor in the Department of English, History and Govern- ment at the U. S. Naval Academy. From September 1963 to july 1965 he was assigned as First Lieutenant and later as Operations Officer on USS RUSHMORE Q LSD 143. Following a tour of duty as Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Training Center, Poughkeepsie, New York, he reported on board USS DONNER in May 1968 as Executive Officer. LCDR Dellinger was promoted to his present rank on 1 july 1965. He holds B. A. and M. A. degrees from DePauw and Georgetown Universities respectively. LCDR David W. Dellinggfi Lieutenant Commander KAY began his naval career in LCDR William G. Kay May 1949 and received his commission through the Integra- tion Program at the Officers Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island in September 1957. Following his commission, he served successive sea tours on th e USS COLUMBUS QCA-74j and the USS MULLANY fDD-528j. In May 1962 he graduated from the General Line School at the U. S. Naval Post-graduate School, Monterey and was subsequently assigned duty as Executive Officer, U. S. Naval Facility, Nantucket, Massachusetts. He was stationed with the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam from March 1964 to june 1965. From july 1965 to October 1967 he served aboard the USS OAK HILL QLSD-7j. Lieutenant Commander KAY commanded the U. S. Naval Facility, Adak from December 1967 until August 1969. He is married to the former Miss Virginia Lee Taylor of Ada, Oklahoma. They have two sons, Steven and Jimmy.
