A native of Trinity, Kentucky, Commander MALON E attended secondary schools in Ripley, Ohio, prior to entering the U. S. Naval Academy. Following his graduation with the Class of 1951, he reported aboard USS IUNEAU CCLAA 1195 where he served as Assistant CIC Officer and Assistant Division Officer. In january 1953 he was promoted to Lieutenant junior Grade. Six months later he was ordered to USS WILKINSON CDL 5j, serving first as CIC Officer and later as ASW Officer. In February 1956, he assumed command of his first ship, USS WOOD- PECKER QMSC 209j. Two and a half iylears later he returned to the Naval Academy to serve as Third Company O 'cer. InHIuly 1960 he was assigned to USS ALDEBARAN QAF 101 as executive o icer. In january 1962 he took command of the radar picket ship USS LOCATOR QAGR 6j. A For his second tour of shore duty, Commander MALONE attended the Naval War College, graduating from the Command and Staff Course on 2 june 1964 and later receiving a M. A. degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. Following graduation he was assigned to the staff of ASWFORLANT as Surface ASW Operations Officer. During this tour he was promoted to his present rank of Commander on 1 February 1966. In October 1966, Commander MALON E reported to USS ROCKBRIDGE QAPA 2285 as Executive Officer. Seventeen months later he assumed duties as Staff Operations Officer, Naval Advisory Group, USMACV. On 6 May 1969 he releived as Commanding Officer, USS DONNER QLSD-20- Commander MALONE is married to the former Mary Elaine NORRIS of Baltimore, Maryland. Commander and Mrs. MALONE reside with their three children, Deborah Jeanne, Roy Wilson, jr., and john Scott, at 617 Abbey Drive, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Commander MALONE holds the following campaign. and service medals: Navy Occupation, China Service, National Defense, Korean Service Q two starsj, United Nations, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Cam- paign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal Ctwo starsj and Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal First Class. To the Crew ofthe USS DOJVJVER KLSD-20 - We have completed a five month cruise in the Mediterranean as part of the United States Sixth Fleet Amphibious Task Force. Our cruise was a most successful one and the fine performance of all hands is very well expressed in a message from Commodore f E RILEY, Commander Amphibious Squadron FOUR, quoted in part below: '71s we complete our MED deployment I would like to...commend you, your omcers and crew for the professional manner in which DOJWVER performed all tasks assigned during this deployment. Particularbz noteworthy was the outstanding manner z'n which DONNER handled the mission of PCS.. COMMfunz'cationsj performance throughout MED 2-69 has been superior in all respects. . .DONNER - was always quick to volunteer services and assistance to all ships in company. LCDR Dellinger was commissioned an Ensign in the Naval Reserve upon completion of Officers Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island, on 1 june 1956. He subsequently served until August 1959 on board USS PHILLIP fDDE 498j in the successive billets of Second Division Officer, First Lieutenant, ASW Officer and Gunnery Officer. Following two years of inactive duty he returned to active service as an instructor in the Department of English, History and Govern- ment at the U. S. Naval Academy. From September 1963 to july 1965 he was assigned as First Lieutenant and later as Operations Officer on USS RUSHMORE Q LSD 143. Following a tour of duty as Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Training Center, Poughkeepsie, New York, he reported on board USS DONNER in May 1968 as Executive Officer. LCDR Dellinger was promoted to his present rank on 1 july 1965. He holds B. A. and M. A. degrees from DePauw and Georgetown Universities respectively. LCDR David W. Dellinggfi Lieutenant Commander KAY began his naval career in LCDR William G. Kay May 1949 and received his commission through the Integra- tion Program at the Officers Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island in September 1957. Following his commission, he served successive sea tours on th e USS COLUMBUS QCA-74j and the USS MULLANY fDD-528j. In May 1962 he graduated from the General Line School at the U. S. Naval Post-graduate School, Monterey and was subsequently assigned duty as Executive Officer, U. S. Naval Facility, Nantucket, Massachusetts. He was stationed with the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam from March 1964 to june 1965. From july 1965 to October 1967 he served aboard the USS OAK HILL QLSD-7j. Lieutenant Commander KAY commanded the U. S. Naval Facility, Adak from December 1967 until August 1969. He is married to the former Miss Virginia Lee Taylor of Ada, Oklahoma. They have two sons, Steven and Jimmy.
