A native of Trinity, Kentucky, Commander MALON E attended secondary schools in Ripley, Ohio, prior to entering the U. S. Naval Academy. Following his graduation with the Class of 1951, he reported aboard USS IUNEAU CCLAA 1195 where he served as Assistant CIC Officer and Assistant Division Officer. In january 1953 he was promoted to Lieutenant junior Grade. Six months later he was ordered to USS WILKINSON CDL 5j, serving first as CIC Officer and later as ASW Officer. In February 1956, he assumed command of his first ship, USS WOOD- PECKER QMSC 209j. Two and a half iylears later he returned to the Naval Academy to serve as Third Company O 'cer. InHIuly 1960 he was assigned to USS ALDEBARAN QAF 101 as executive o icer. In january 1962 he took command of the radar picket ship USS LOCATOR QAGR 6j. A For his second tour of shore duty, Commander MALONE attended the Naval War College, graduating from the Command and Staff Course on 2 june 1964 and later receiving a M. A. degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. Following graduation he was assigned to the staff of ASWFORLANT as Surface ASW Operations Officer. During this tour he was promoted to his present rank of Commander on 1 February 1966. In October 1966, Commander MALON E reported to USS ROCKBRIDGE QAPA 2285 as Executive Officer. Seventeen months later he assumed duties as Staff Operations Officer, Naval Advisory Group, USMACV. On 6 May 1969 he releived as Commanding Officer, USS DONNER QLSD-20- Commander MALONE is married to the former Mary Elaine NORRIS of Baltimore, Maryland. Commander and Mrs. MALONE reside with their three children, Deborah Jeanne, Roy Wilson, jr., and john Scott, at 617 Abbey Drive, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Commander MALONE holds the following campaign. and service medals: Navy Occupation, China Service, National Defense, Korean Service Q two starsj, United Nations, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Cam- paign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal Ctwo starsj and Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal First Class. To the Crew ofthe USS DOJVJVER KLSD-20 - We have completed a five month cruise in the Mediterranean as part of the United States Sixth Fleet Amphibious Task Force. Our cruise was a most successful one and the fine performance of all hands is very well expressed in a message from Commodore f E RILEY, Commander Amphibious Squadron FOUR, quoted in part below: '71s we complete our MED deployment I would like to...commend you, your omcers and crew for the professional manner in which DOJWVER performed all tasks assigned during this deployment.
