THE USS DONNER IS 458 FEET LONG, 72 FEET WIDE, DRAWS 18 FEET OF WATER, AND CAN DO 15.5 KNOTS. SHE HAS A PERSONNEL ALLOWANCE OF 13 OFFICERS AND 249 ENLISTED MEN WITH SPACE FOR ABOUT 175 TROOPS. BECAUSE OF ITS WIDE ADAPTABILITY TO ALL TASKS, THE NAVY TODAY IS RELYING MORE AND MORE ON THE LANDING SHIP DOCK. THE LSD CAN BALLAST DOWN AND OPERATE LANDING CRAFT IN AND OUT OF ITS WELL DECK THROUGH A LARGE STERN GATE . . . HELICOPTERS CAN OPERATE FROM ITS HELO PLATFORM . . . IT CAN TRANSPORT TROOPS, TANKS, CRANES, TRUCKS, AND OTHER EQUIPMENT OVER GREAT DISTANCES AND LAND THEM AT A PIER, BY HELICOPTER, OR BY BOATS AT SEA.

Commander Ralph A. Brackett is a native of Gastonia, North Carolina. He was graduated from Wofford College in 1939 and entered the Naval Service in August 1942 through the V-7 Officer ' s Candidate Program. He participated in the Guam-Saipan-Tinian Amphibious Operations on the PC 549, and took that vessel to Okinawa as Commanding Officer. Following World War II, Commander Brackett served as Commanding Officer of the EPCR 852 in the infra-red testing program. He saw duty as Gun Boss aboard the O ' HARE (DD-889), taught Naval Ordinance at Duke University NROTC, and served as Executive Officer of the PARKER (DE- 369) and the KNAPP (DD-653). After attending General Line School, Monterey, California, he was sent to the JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF as Administrative Secretary. Commander Brackett reported to the Amphibious Force, as Command- ing Officer of the DONNER, from Headquarters, U. S. European Command, Paris, France .
