Cf is gDzof2fi.scz Today, the ninth day of january. lU5o. as I was sitting before the fire musing over the good old days at Donelson High School. my eyes fell upon a familiar name in the newspaper. To my surprise. Fred Ilenson fDangerous Dan to usb had resigned his post on the Frisco Flap to become editor in chief of the lltuly llistlppoinztlzlviif. Vernon Allen, the new singing sensation, has landed a job on a nation-wide hookup advertising XX'histlcr's Bird Seed, He opens the program by singing l'm Only a Bird in a Gilded Cage. Naturally, we all helped to elect our own Patsy Smith the first woman president of the United States. lncidentally, the First l.ady objected to the take- off which recently appeared in Xtaldo XYindshield's column under the title, The XYalk. My Old friend, Ann l.ove. is president of I.ove's Musical Hit Company in New York. ller latest torch song to be published is 'tkly Men. Lester Hardy. proprietor of the Flig Store tsucccssor to Harvey'sl is now capitalizing on his latest campaign slogan, Now-Hardy Has It. The world-famous Smoke Howl, held recently at Dudley Field in Nashville and attracting fans from all parts of the globe, was indeed a gigantic event. Of course, the height of the occasion was Coach Frank Newman's presentation regarding the outstand- ing bowl performer. Coaclrs statement was, I could not ask for a more colossal performance than that given by Sam Love, currently playing with the tireen Bay Packers. Many celebrities were seen in the crowded stadium, Katherine jackson, pwet laureate of the U. S. A., had just arrived in .Xmerica from Iiurope. Katherine was all excited over her trip across on the new Strato-Cruiser. llelieve it or not. the pilot on this giant wonder was none other than ,lames Howard Baker-yes, believe it or not! . . . Katherine was telling us about Rachel XIcRannold's fashionable shop on the Rue de la Pais in Paris. Her widely- known letterhead reads, Nlademoiselle's Gowns by Rachelle. . . . Spotted Congressman ,loe l.annom. Democrat from Tennessee, seated in the governor's box. High up in the stands in the teeming mass of spectators were Lucille Hagar and her husband, at Federal Reserve banker. Naturally, she won him through her efficient secretarial service .,,. Betty NIcCandless was also there with her husband. Confidentially, we hear he is the most henpecked man in the world. His only Comment on the matter is. Oh, we frequently have words, but I never get to use mine. Betty Owen is now' touring the country with a band of her own. lt is rumored that there is some con- nection between the retirement of Minnie Pearl and the increasing fame of Betty, lJonelson's gift fo the Grand Ole Opry. Marjorie VVaggoner has settled down in Florida, having married a well-known orange grove expert, Marjorie and her husband frequently come back to visit the Ilerbert iioodwins, Ilerbert, you know. is doing scientific farming on a big scale, having applied all the knowledge that he learned under Klr, 'I'ucker's supervision. Klorticians throughout the country are organining to seek a case against Harold Reborn. whose monu- ment and undertaking establishment is virtually run- ning them out of business. The bone of contention must be the slogan oi Ilarold's ttndertaker which reads, You may linger. but I'll get you yet. Cliffordean Honcr and Betty fioodwin are the ultra- modern varcer girls. Clirfordean is stewardess on the 'liranscontinental flagship between Xliami and the Panama Canal Zone. while Iletty is secretary to the Lfnited States ambassador to Russia. She has attended several Big Three meetings and is fast becoming' an important pcrsonage in this .Xtomic Age .... Speaking of personages, Orris tioodman. the eugineei'ing wizard of all times, is shoveling up the mountains in Ten- nessee as well as recharting all the rivet's to avert future floods. Saw Orris and his wife. Charlene Vludkins. recently in the capital city. Charlene is very proud of her husband's success. Ilrowsing through the Congressional I.ibrary in XYashing'ton recently, I bumped into Ethel Davis, who was doing some research work on her new history textbook. This surprised me greatly for the Ethel we knew in history class never quite knew' whether Plymouth Rock landed on the Pilgrims or the Pil- grims landed on Plymouth Rock. She was surprised to see me and when I told her what I was doing she asked me if I w'ouldn't like to drop dow'n to Clarke's 'liavern tformerly IJuffy'sl. On entering' we met XIcClendon himself who wanted to know where on earth we had come from. He said. I.et me show' you under a table-the floor show is about to begin, We followed him dazedly to our stills just in time to see Peggie Forehand in neon-trimmed evening dress wavering into an old-time rendition of Km I Blue? . . , Peggie. having returned from a world tour with l1ower's Modeling .Xgency-just in time for the per- formance ...., ks we got up to leave, in swaggered lloris ,Ieanne XYhitc, swathed in ermine and diamonds and escorted by her first. second. and third husbands. respectively, lncidentally, it has been rumored she married for money. XYell. this brings us down to the class prophet him- self. It has been like a hve-course dinner. folks, all the way front soup to lIllf.Y and that's where I come in. lf you're in the Nletropolitan city soon, drop around to see Orson XYelles and uni I.ux Radio 'I'heatre is absolutely fighting over us. Need I say more? Xol 'l'hough we joked about our life at Donelson. in years to come we shall always cherish the fine spirit which existed there and the many friendships which we made. XYitlt good luck and best wishes. I remain. Bret. Ncxriev.
