There were forty-nine timid boys and girls who entered the portals of Donelson High School- timid, but proud. Miss johnson and Mrs. Hawkins. who respectively became Mrs. Grassmand and Mrs, McBurnett after oui' freshman year. were our sponsors. After getting acquainted with each other. we elected the following class officers: Buster Jennings, president: Frank Newman, copresident. Albert Owen and Dor- othy Hurt represented us as cheerleaders, All of these students proved capable of their jobs. and as a freshman class we won several high honors. XYhen September, 1943, rolled around, we came bouncing back to old Donelson High with all the vim. vigor, and vitality that was possible for 1943 boys and girls to possess. Yes, we had quite an exciting and prosperous year, but little did we realize that American history lurked just around the corner. Our slate of officers this year was: Vernon Allen, president: Martha Peek, vice-president: Robert Hurt, secretary-treasurer: and james Lee Burrus, sergeant at arms. Our cheerleaders were none other than Ann Love and Yernon Allen, Ah, yes, what could we expect but a prosperous year with such capable leaders and such a swell class. To our number this year we added a couple of outstanding studentsAPatsy Smith and Fred Denson-who have contributed their store to our success at Donelson High. Mrs, Grass- man and Mrs. McBurnctt were again our class spon- SOYS. The fall of 1944 brought us face to face with our junior year. Some of our original number were gone ieither answering' the call of the draft or enlisting' in the service of our country. Others-you know some always forget to study for exams-are still sopho- mores. VVith another lively addition, Betty Owen, to our family. we were really making history by this time. This year we were led by the following officers: Frank Newman, president: Clarke McClendon. vice- president: Betty Owen, secretary: jimmy Haralson. treasurer: and james Lee Burrus, sergeant at arms. Mrs. Floyd, who came to us this year from Cumber- land, and Mrs. McBurnett becaine our sponsors. XYith their help we again completed a successful year. XYQ would not forget to commend Ralph Finney, Vernon .-Xllen, Patsy Smith, Charlene judkins, and XYayne Steele for their outstanding' performance in the diama, The Bishop's Candlesticks, which won first and third places, respectively, in the school and county contests. lVe were proud to have Ralph place first on the all-star cast. lVe were also represented in sports. It all seems like a dream as I sit and reminisce over our four years in high school and try to express to you some of the important and unforgettable hap- penings during that memorable period. Needless to say, our happiest and best year leaped into view in September, 1945-that glorious senior year. VVith stout hearts and strong minds, we en- tered this year with a purpose to do whatever task lay before us earnestly, willingly, and cheerfully. This we have tried to do. lYe elected the following officers and feel that they have been exceptional leaders: Sam Love, president: Betty Owen, vice-presi- dent: Peggie Forehand, secretary: Bill Nunley, treas- urer: and Vernon Allen, sergeant at arms, This has been our busiest year, what with the annual in progress practically all year-it takes that long' to do an annual job well. Then. too, there was the senior play, The Bachelors Baby, starring Patsy Smith, Bill Nunley, Ann Love, and Lester Hardy. This was a hilarious comedy and proved to be a fa- vorite with the student body, winning hrst place in the school dramatic contest. Yes, as seniors, you really have your hands full, but never let anyone tell you it isn't fun. lt Is worth every second of the twelve years you spend in school just to know the enjoyment of the senior year. Wie appreciate very much our sponsor, Mrs. Floyd, Her guidance and leadership inspired us to attempt to be better citizens and to never turn our back, but march breast forward all the way. Her untiring efforts and her sweet, kind way have led ns to a Final victory. for which we express our sincere ap- preciation. ln behalf of the Class of 19-lo, l should like to express the sincere wish that all future classes will enjoy their years at Donelson as much as we have and that they will profit by some of the ideals we cherished. ln the years to come when we glance at our class history, may it bring' fond memories to each and every heart. To my surprise. Fred Ilenson fDangerous Dan to usb had resigned his post on the Frisco Flap to become editor in chief of the lltuly llistlppoinztlzlviif. Vernon Allen, the new singing sensation, has landed a job on a nation-wide hookup advertising XX'histlcr's Bird Seed, He opens the program by singing l'm Only a Bird in a Gilded Cage. Naturally, we all helped to elect our own Patsy Smith the first woman president of the United States. lncidentally, the First l.ady objected to the take- off which recently appeared in Xtaldo XYindshield's column under the title, The XYalk. My Old friend, Ann l.ove. is president of I.ove's Musical Hit Company in New York. ller latest torch song to be published is 'tkly Men. Lester Hardy. proprietor of the Flig Store tsucccssor to Harvey'sl is now capitalizing on his latest campaign slogan, Now-Hardy Has It. The world-famous Smoke Howl, held recently at Dudley Field in Nashville and attracting fans from all parts of the globe, was indeed a gigantic event. Of course, the height of the occasion was Coach Frank Newman's presentation regarding the outstand- ing bowl performer. Coaclrs statement was, I could not ask for a more colossal performance than that given by Sam Love, currently playing with the tireen Bay Packers. Many celebrities were seen in the crowded stadium, Katherine jackson, pwet laureate of the U. S. A., had just arrived in .Xmerica from Iiurope. Katherine was all excited over her trip across on the new Strato-Cruiser. llelieve it or not. the pilot on this giant wonder was none other than ,lames Howard Baker-yes, believe it or not! . . . Katherine was telling us about Rachel XIcRannold's fashionable shop on the Rue de la Pais in Paris. Her widely- known letterhead reads, Nlademoiselle's Gowns by Rachelle. . . . Spotted Congressman ,loe l.annom. Democrat from Tennessee, seated in the governor's box. High up in the stands in the teeming mass of spectators were Lucille Hagar and her husband, at Federal Reserve banker. Naturally, she won him through her efficient secretarial service .,,. Betty NIcCandless was also there with her husband. Confidentially, we hear he is the most henpecked man in the world. His only Comment on the matter is. Oh, we frequently have words, but I never get to use mine. Betty Owen is now' touring the country with a band of her own. lt is rumored that there is some con- nection between the retirement of Minnie Pearl and the increasing fame of Betty, lJonelson's gift fo the Grand Ole Opry. Marjorie VVaggoner has settled down in Florida, having married a well-known orange grove expert, Marjorie and her husband frequently come back to visit the Ilerbert iioodwins, Ilerbert, you know. is doing scientific farming on a big scale, having applied all the knowledge that he learned under Klr, 'I'ucker's supervision. Klorticians throughout the country are organining to seek a case against Harold Reborn. whose monu- ment and undertaking establishment is virtually run- ning them out of business. The bone of contention must be the slogan oi Ilarold's ttndertaker which reads, You may linger. but I'll get you yet. Cliffordean Honcr and Betty fioodwin are the ultra- modern varcer girls. Clirfordean is stewardess on the 'liranscontinental flagship between Xliami and the Panama Canal Zone. while Iletty is secretary to the Lfnited States ambassador to Russia. She has attended several Big Three meetings and is fast becoming' an important pcrsonage in this .Xtomic Age .... Speaking of personages, Orris tioodman. the eugineei'ing wizard of all times, is shoveling up the mountains in Ten- nessee as well as recharting all the rivet's to avert future floods. Saw Orris and his wife. Charlene Vludkins. recently in the capital city. Charlene is very proud of her husband's success. Ilrowsing through the Congressional I.ibrary in XYashing'ton recently, I bumped into Ethel Davis, who was doing some research work on her new history textbook. This surprised me greatly for the Ethel we knew in history class never quite knew' whether Plymouth Rock landed on the Pilgrims or the Pil- grims landed on Plymouth Rock. She was surprised to see me and when I told her what I was doing she asked me if I w'ouldn't like to drop dow'n to Clarke's 'liavern tformerly IJuffy'sl. On entering' we met XIcClendon himself who wanted to know where on earth we had come from. He said. 'Iihe exceptional guarding of Leona Liddle and the smooth playing of Mildred liarbee. together with the keen determination of ,lean ability of the guards, which was quite a chal- lenge to their opponents. Spurred on by Dorothy Swann's high scor- ing and Betty Sue Anderson's eye for the basket, as well as Dorothy Jacobs' strong sense of teamwork, the forwards also were able to rank among the best performers in the district.
