We have attempted to represent Donegal as an institution of learn- ing and living, for we, the graduating class, realize that school has played a wonderful role in our lives and education. Pat Brenner Carolyn Showalter Co-editors 2 DEDICATIO The Emerald Staff of nineteen-hundred fifty-nine hereby dedicates this yearbook to the late Albert D. Seiler, whose experienced out- look on education did much for the establishment and progress of Donegal Union High School. He was a member of the Mount Joy Borough School Board for twenty-six years and the second president of the Donegal Joint School Board. He was also president of the Sico F oundation. Having been an outstanding citizen of our community, Mr. Seiler will long be remembered not only by those closely associated with him but by the multitude that has and will continue to reap the fruits of his labors. Emerald Staff 3 TABLE OF SEN IORS - VII UNDERCLASSMEN - XLI ACTIVITIES - LVI CONTENTS ATHLETICS - LXXI ADMINISTRATION - LXXIX ADVERTISEMENTS - LXXXVIII W V v HHHHHH X CLASS P01-EM Friends, teachers, classmates, lend us your ears, We come to recall the past twelve years. The vain works of some already are gone, But the good we did shall live on and on. We know we were an ambitious class, Opportunities we wouldn't let pass. But being ambitious is not a fault, And progress was not brought to a halt. On we strived always doing our best 3 No wonder our class surpassed the rest. We will miss our friends and old school days, As we all go our separate ways. The years have been fun and full of laughterg All this we'll remember long years after. We come to the end with joy in our hearts, As we go into the world to take our parts. And like the ancient Romans we'll look forward To doing our best as we march onward! 6 SENIORS 5 PATRICIA ASTON Business Path Nice personality . . . Usually seen MILDRED R. We entered Donegal in the eighth grade, finding a large task ahead of - becoming acquainted with the rest of our classmates. However, in a few weeks we were amazed to discover that we had become acquainted with many new friends. This friendship grew, as the Roman Empire once grew. As sophomores we elected our first class ofiicers: president - Don White, vice presi- dent - Barry Brandt, Secretary - Pat Brenner, treasurer - Robert Brandt, historian - Carolyn Showalter. This year we also purchased and proudly displayed our class jackets of green and white. Our Junior year held much activity in store. For our officers we chose the following: president - Don White, vice president - Ronald Sager g secretary - Marlene Metzlerg treasurer - Larry Pardoe, historian - Darla Kulp. Soon after the beginning of the school year, we purchased our class rings with the Donegal emblem, featuring the Donegal Church and Witness Tree. Our play, Just Ducky,', directed by Mr. H. Martin Shenk and Mr. Robert B. Smith, was a great success. Another successful achievement of the year was the prom, where we entertained the seniors. The theme of the prom was focused on the Oriental countries and featured a large Oriental garden and a teahouse. When September, 1958, came, we, as seniors, found it hard to believe that this would be our last year at Donegal. The following class officers were soon selected: president - Barry Barnhartg vice president - Ronald Sager, secretary - Judy Heisey, treasurer - Larry Pardoeg historian - Darla Kulp. The first responsibility we undertook as seniors was the operation of a food stand at the Mount Joy Farm Show. On October 22 we enjoyed a class trip to Washington, D. C. Our senior play, Jane Eyre, directed by Miss Catharine G. Zeller, was held on November 21 and 22 and proved to be another big success. We, as seniors, were again in charge of the school newspaper and Youth Day in Government. It was also a pleasure for us to prepare the fifth edition of the Emerald with Pat Brenner and Carolyn Showalter as co-editors. At this time our Class Day, Baccalaureate, and Commencement plans are being made. It seems beyond realization that we will soon be leaving Donegal as graduates. We have learned that Rome was not built in a day, and we know that the spirit of our class has been built and rebuilt during the five years we have spent in Donegal - never to falter or fall!
