The test of loyalty is not in agreement but in disagreement, not in approval but disapproval. If, making allowances for mistakes, failures, prejudices, I am staunch in my allegiance I am gaining in strength and charity. If I decide to look beyond all this area of difference for an affinity discoverable perhaps by faith alone, I am practicing loyalty. Dom Hubert van Zeller, O.S .B. The advancements of science, the endeavors into outer space, the changes in technology, give every Tech graduate an opportunity to find a place in these advances, to make a place for him- self in this world of change, but a world with its roots in the traditions of the past. We at Bosco Tech have tried to help you prepare for this new world, for your future. We have tried to instill a reverence for our past, a respect for the decency of man along with the courage and determination to meet new challenges and greater opportunities. Your past application to work and study will have supplied you with the skills and knowledge necessary to take your place as valuable and intelligent members of the modern techno- logical society. The prayers of your teachers and instructors go with you. May your faith in God and interest in other people make your life rewarding and successful. God bless you. Sincerely, Q-My Rev. Thomas Prendiville, S.D.B. President AUTOMOTIVE 0 CABINETMAKING ' ELECTRONICS 'INDUSTRIAL DRAFTING ' MECHANICAL TECHNOLOGY ' METALLURGY ' PHOTOLITHOGRAPHY IN APPRECIATIDN K o . in Brother Anthony Freitas, S.D.B, Don Bosco has reminded the Salesian Fathers Sz Brothers that, our school Work is part and parcel of Salesian life, that it is a means of leading souls to Godg that the school exists for the purpose of forming good Christians, and must therefore be conducted in a Christian manner, and on no other lines . To be still more explicit he adds that if any one of our teachers were to forget that he must carry out his duties according to the Salesian spirit, even though he be endowed with great ability, he would be like something harming the rest of the body. These words exemplify the life -Work of Brother Anthony Freitas to Whom We wish to express our deepest appreciation for his 15 years of service and loyalty to Bosco-Tech. I2 Rev. Bernard I. He was a giant in his love of country-a giant in his love of the poor, the underprivileged, a gigantic manager of a foremost family-team . A great athlete himself, he Luiderstood the game of life--with its hits and its errors, its assists and putouts, and wild pitches and the pass balls, the decisions by inches, the accidents, the dangers, the long and the short innings. Let us learn what the great Game gives For bodies die, but the spirit lives. May we of the human team learn from this champion, who scintillated in the passing lineup. We didn't know too many people and a good number of our grammar school friends went to other high schoolsg then we didn't know what to expect from our teachers, and we heard that every teacher gives about 3 hours of homework every night. Then carrying all of those books every day: they must weigh about 40 pounds but we got used to it. But what really keeps us here--and the only reason we really came to Bosco-Tech - is the shops, which we feel will help us in our future life. 174 Our main goal this year is to under stand the operation, and the nomencla- ture of the major components of the automobile. We also learn a thorough safety program, taking in all aspects of the shop and general safety. This is accomplished in two ways: first by complete technical lecture, and second by actual shop work. We came in on Saturday to Work on our shop projects, play some soccer, basketball, etc. School life had a more meanful meaning to us this year. This year as a sophomore, We study the vacuum tube theory and its application thereof. Then We studied the operation and practical considerations involved in design of power supplies. From there We progress- ed into design and analysis of major AC and DC amplifiers. Am detectors, heterodyne converters and associated circuitry con- stituted the remaining portion of the year. We Walked on campus the first day of school acting like big shots without those funny-looking briefcases. We didn't look forward to another year of English, geome try or any other subjectg but the thought of getting the group together again in shop brought our spirits up. The shop routine brought us back into reality - We had to Work! Projects got on their Way. Some of these projects Will be entered into fairs and industrial shows. In September of 1965 the class of 1969 first entered the campus of Don Bosco Technical Institute. Each of the boys, either by their own will or by parental authority, was there for a purpose. In them was the raw material necessaryto form individuals having the knowledge to succeed in industry and life. From those that remained for four years would come a closely-knit group that is today's Class of '69 . All of these boys had taken the first step of a four year journey toward their chosen goals. But only 1 out of 3 was destined for success through Bosco Tech. The Freshman Class was made up of the typical variety of boys overladen with books and briefcases. The first days found them wandering aimlessly about like a herd of sheep be ing led to the right place at the right time. Each day produced a barrage of new and challenging experiences. The air was filled with apprehension of what would happen next. The weeks and months flew by until the end of the first semester - the first goal - was met. When the deluge of ex- ams and grades was over the results were there. The class stood fewer in number but realized what all the work was for and what success meant. Understanding these things, the Freshman pressed on and resolved to make the best of their high school days. The remaining months of the first year sped by bringing spring and the longing for summer. The pressures eased with the thoughts of the balmy days ahead. Three months later, with one quarter of their journey gone, the class returned, smaller but stronger and more confi- dent of success. With the beginning still clearly in mind and the end in the uncertain futtue, the Sophomores, already well condi- tioned to the daily routine, quickly setteled down to their laborious duties. With few new experiences to keep them jumping, the Sophomores discovered the inner workings of Bosco Tech. While visualizing themselves as the future leaders of the school, they joined the many clubs and activities. But in most cases they lacked the age and maturity of campus leaders. Days came one by one until the last final and summer vacation had arrived again to soothe the Weary travelers on their journey - now half over. This summer was special. The prestigious upper division was in sight. New ideals and new enthusiasm blended with a great deal of maturity. When this summer was over each Techman was ready for the new challenge and the new outlook that marked the upper division. The Class of '69 came back once again, now as juniors, but there was something new and different. They found that with a positive acceptance of their new role, responsibility, leadership and a clear path to success was in their grasp. But there were also hardships and difficulties that would test them in a new way. Their test came with death, which struck twice during the year. First Ken Kunihiro and then Mike Tomren died - two classmates who had grown through success and fail1.1re with the Class of '69. The acceptance of these tragedies by the class truly showed their maturity. The junior Year proved to be one of interest and new found enthusiasm. They took pride in applying the basics, learned in the Freshman and Sophomore years, to more advanced shop projects. They found meaning and importance in their academic st11dies. But best of all they became involved in the activities of the school and actually became impor- tant members of the machinery that is Bosco Tech. After a third summer of varied activity Fall came around once more, but this time with a certain finality. The Sen- ior Year had arrived. Of four years, this was to be the biggest. This was the one they had all worked for and this was the year they wanted to do their best. From the very beginning of the Senior Year there were changes - more than just the important one of status. There was a new Vice Principal to adapt to. There was a new class schedule. These and many other diHerences meant only one thing, more responsibility. Along with these changes was the usual array of projects, activities, clubs, problems and wor- ries of the Tech Senior. With all this the school life of the Senior Class of '69 could be summed up in the phrase, total involvement . Every day and every event had a special meaning, for it would be the last at Tech. This idea encouraged each Sen- ior to work a little harder and to do a little more. Soon the first semester was gone and the days moved slowly but surely towards that final challenge, the Science Fair. All work was centered on the Science Project. Finally the work was finished and the Fair came. Almost unbelieveably it was over and in passing it took with it all the problems and apprehensions of building the Science Proj ect. Activity pick- ed up once more and it seemed to be clear sailing until graduation. That final day came and -- men, with mixed emotions, walked together to receive their priceless diploma. They walk together now and will always be together in the fullest spirit as the Don Bosco Technical Institute Class of 1969. To all that made our growth and education through Bosco Tech possible, the Class of 1969 says thank you and fare- well. On the opening day of school all the incoming students were afforded a view of our new Vice Principal. On first glance he gave the impression of being a strong disciplinarian. Later in the year he proved to be all for the student body. For all his help in organizing events throughout the year the TECHMAN staff would like to extend to Fr. B. Dabbene, S. D. B. , a permanent welcome to the ranks of the Bosco Tech faculty. A great milestone in the history of Bosco Tech occurred this year, the Lettermen Society finally did something. This feat came about largely through the urging of Fr. Dabbene and for this the staff again thanks him. As many people know Fr. Jack was not the Choir Master last year but he returned to the Tech in September to make sure that the magic he instilled in his Glee Club had not gone out. To prove to the world that it hadn't Fr. Jack with t.he assistance of the Glee Club Members put on the greatest Christmas program that the Tech has ever seen. Even the fairer sex was seen on the circular stage in Tech Hall when the Up With People cast from Rio Hondo starred in the patriotic assembly in honor of the Father of our country. On a more serious level, two of the members of our faculty received a great vote of confidence as well as a great honor. On March 3rd the faculty of Don Bosco Technical Institute unanimously voted Mr. Anthony Troncale and Bro. Frank Bracchi, S. D. B. , to the advisory committee of the new college. 1 ' So far the talk has been about the faculty honors and accomplishments, but this school year has not found the student of the coin to be blank. The great event for the student body was the fact that for the first time since 1962 the Tech was actually in an established league, the Santa Fe League. The student body, Coach Troncale and the team were not too optimistic about the coming season. We were new in the league, we had only one returning Varsity player QGreg Habellj, and we were considered by the oddsmakers to be the best choice for dead last. As it turned out the Tech produc- ed a Cinderella Team. After losing the first game of the season to Thousand Oaks, the team had an uphill fight all the way, winning games in the last few seconds, like in the la Salle game. In the end, I with the Coach's training down to a science, the confidence gained from the knowledge of their own skill, amid the cheers of their friends, the team march- ed victoriously inot the C. I. F. playoffs! This was the crowning glory of the athletic school year. The Student Council was more active this year than it has been since its conception. This was due largely to the ef- forts of Barney Kaelin, A. S. B. president, There are many other student activities and new organizations too numerous to mention but the staff would like' to thank the Student Council and the Letterman Society for making the school year '68 - '69 a memorable one. I The theme of our book was loyalty and nothing could have better suited this year. The Yearbook was not mentioned with the firsts for this year because, even though it is different from year to year, it is not a first, it is a primary. About March 10th the Yearbook staff sat back and took a look at a job well done. It had taken loyalty, skill and imagination as well as determination to get the book going and keep it going. I know that the staff did the best job they knew how and that effort on their part produced the finest Yearbook Bosco Tech has ever known. The outsider will never know the effort, work and trouble that goes into the making of a Yearbook. I would like to thank my assistant, TONY KURPAKUS, and our Finance Editor, ,JOHN NEHMENS, who managed to keep us out of debt most of the time. My thanks for an outstanding cover and attractive title pages ig extended to TEO ALEMANIA, our Art Editor. The sports section in last year's book left a little to be ldesired but this year STEVE GOODRICI-I and JIM I-IIGSON together with DON ELEY, the Sports Editor, put together a really great section. I would like to thank these members of the staff very much since they took or found or stole time from the interscholastic ath- letic program to work on this section. A lion's share of time was put in on the club section by RUDY I-IERRERA and MANUEL FRANCO, the Club Editors, and their staff GUY LA BLANC and DAVE HERRERA. These guy came in on the middle of things and made a great sec- tion out of a disaster area. ' There is one thing that a year book absolutely has to have and that is pictures. The credit in this department goes to the staff photographers, JEFF MORGAN and JIM DOWD. The who's who as far as the Yearbook is concerned was handled by DAVE TOMBLIN, BOB LIEWER, and STEVE LOZA. Those of you who might snicker at the thought of an Index Editor please think for a moment all the work that goes into the searching through page after page to find people and then to have to make alphabetical lists according to people, well that is a lot of work in anyone's book and I thank these staff members very much. The Technology section was done by TARAS SZYNKAR and JOHN TULACZ. Their efforts are very much appreciated. Finally the last of the staff members to be thanked but perhaps the ones who did the most work are the members of my own staff. They are: ANDY BERGMAN, BOB LOZA, BOB SAUVAGEAU, JOHN KRAKOWSKI, KEV DORSEY and STEVE DORSEY. To the faculty I give my sincere thanks for all the help and patience they showed when we were trying to take pic- tures and get stories. My special thanks goes to Mr. Johnson, Fr. Buja, and Bro. Reda for their help in thinking up cap- tions and copy. ' This year, as always, the staff is indebted to the benevolence of the ladies in the office. We wish to thank all of them an especially MRS. SIMONS, MRS. NASSAR, MRS. GIBBS, and MRS. BUSH for putting up with all the trouble and headaches that they went through proof reading and criticizing our work. Thanks also goes to the Glenbrier Studios for all their wonderful pictures and to MR. JOHN THOMAS, our Yearbook representative with the American Yearbook Compan . MR.yand MRS. BARCLAY deserve our thanks for their aid in the patron drive. l could go on thanking people from now until the summer ends but there is one more special person without whom the 'Yearbook just wouldn't exist. That person is, of course, our moderator, BRO. JOSEPH LOCKWOOD. He made the Yearbook staff go and it is to him that I give all- the thanks that can be given. I I hope that you will enjoy this book of memories for many years to come. The staff, together with myself and Bro. Lockwood, hopes that this spirit of loyalty which reigned throughout 1969 will again be present on campus next year.
