He is an individual who has matured in mind and body to accept the responsibility of an upper division student. These responsibilities include: good example, both on and off cam- pusg putting his technical knowledge into practiceg taking a more active part in school life and activitiesg and most of all preparing himself for the future . Its birth marked the beginning. This was the year of challenge, the year of long awaited change. The future class of '68 first set foot on Don Bosco Technical Institute's nine year old campus and their cumbersome brief cases, per- plexed outward emotions, comical stature, and grammar school maturity immediately labeled them as the incoming Freshman Class . Halfway around the world at this time, the third session of the Vatican Council was con- vening, while in Russia, Khruschev fell from power. New, awakening, stimulating and revealing experiences blended with irony, success, and often temporary defeat as the Freshman year droned onward. At Indianapolis, A.j . -Foyt whizzed to victory, and meanwhile in Washington the historic civil rights act of 1964 was signed. The end finally came. There was the usual holiday spirit and unpopular barrage of home- work assignments . The last glow of 1964 illuminated the opening doors of the New York's World Fair, and mournfully flickered at the deaths of two great statesmen, Prime Minister jeharal Nehru and former President Herbert Hoover, whose names now lie indelibly in their nations' memories. 1965 marked a time of trials and tribulations as the remainder of that first year at Don Bosco began unfolding, and would not stop until june. This was the hardest time of that first year. Every new demand became a burden, while anxiety over grades became almost unbearable . A sizable portion of the class inevitably did not return after the summer had departed. Now, no longer the lost sheep, the Sophomore class began its colossal task of preparing for leadership. Already, Gemini flights 111 and IV had set unprecedented space re cords, and for the first time, American and European Television were linked by Early Bird. Preparing for leadership may come naturally, but it is not always easy. The new Sopho- mores still scribbled down every verbal utterance of their professors. Wading through second year Latin and now being proficient quick-change artists in those amazing locker rooms, the testimonial list still shrank. A power blackout in the East, crippled New York and the death of Dr. Albert Schweitzer shocked the world. The hard-fought Sophomore year brought tears and recognition. As it slipped away, Casey Stengel bade the Mets farewell and France entered the space race. 1966 saw a mature junior Class standing half the size it had been at the beginning. It now had straddled the border and been naturalized into the upper division. An awakening realization that the end was near renewed the efforts of many slumbering students . While chronically occupying the number two spot, the majority now echoed, We try harder . The summer of '67 arrived, but now the class of '68 faced its most crucial period. By simple deduction, the time had come, the advent of dreams and despairs, the fulfillment of labors, --- The Senior Year. While Governor Reagan boosted taxes, the Senior class at Bosco Tech was trying desper- ately to..maintain its cool under pressure. Yes, it was hectic, almost beyond belief. Campus activities, previously ignored, now possessed immeasurable value. Science projects emerged from cobwebs as frantic geniuses awakened. jingle! jingle! went that last silent Christmas. In South Africa, the miraculous breath of life sustained history's first human heart transplant patient . The Tech Varsity Basketball team crowned its roughest season in years with a victory over Cantwell 66-58, while Indiana went to the Rose Bowl for the first time. Open House struck with blitzkrieg timing. Anxiety, judgement, darkness, more scattered days and weeks vanish into oblivion. Suddenly, momentously, events pickup, time heads blindly towards a solid wall and everything grinds towards a smashing climax of final flurry and devastating excitement. Silence. Reverent, solemn stillnessg this is the end. One hundreld and forty-four tassels swish in unison, one hundred and forty-four proud young men salute Don Bosco Tech and its cherished memories. I am honored to be one of their number. Farewell from the class of 1968. I 1 Rev. William Schafer, S. D. B Vice Principal 1: . ff -1 , Rev. Richard Jiru, S. D. B. S-. Automotive iff ,J , . The main goal of the freshman year is to understand the operation, and nomen clature of the major components of the auto. This is accomplished in two Ways first by complete technical lecture, and second by actual shop Work. Toward the end of the freshman year a simple course in basic circuitry is taken. This blends in with the complete electrical service included in the sophomore year Included in the freshman year also is a thorough safety program, taking in all aspects of shop and general safety. 146 f' , f The sophomore year is divided into three major sections: the first section is the con- tinuation of electrical circuits of the auto- mobile. The sophomores are already famil- iar With certain types of Automotive Elec- trical Circuits, covered in the freshman year. Electrical trouble shooting is impor- tant, as it is helpful in the junior year major tune-up. The second section covered in the sophomore year is the break section. In this section, the students learn about the differ- ent types of brakes and their operations. The sophomore completes the year with the basic study of preventive maintenance of the automobile. The study of this section is completed in the senior year. ,iw N' M, Hi it U ,W rt' . Y . ' gf ' nl' ' I Y i 5, Assisi? 'isssss F Al li 'fi f K . x. NX . . ii bb r . ' -' A ,111 r 2: iv Url- 5- Y.. Residential dwell- ings, or Woodframe-house construction, afforded us enough work and problems for the en- tire year. During the year we Worked in minimalic construc- tion both in framing and cabinet- ry. This has been an exciting year. We are anxious to begin upper division Work. A api., l The purpose of the first year in building technology became more apparent when we began to realize its vastness and complexity. The tradesman, the engineer, the architect, all seem to have a different languageg this then was precisely our task of mastering the reading, writing, and vocabulary of the building industry. The materials studied were Wood, metal and concrete and masonry products. 151 Perhaps, the fourth year may find us tired, but we're sure to be enthusiastic. Structural detailing, estimating and general office practices and basic engineering are the major areas of study. -.K QI? ,,,. 'ls 'F fl 3 The third year delves into applied building technology, that is, forming and reinforcing, heating, plumbing and electrical studies. Besides, applied building technology, testing and surveying are also major courses of study. Testing is concerned with the strength of materials. Electronics As a student enters the electronics course he is welcomed by four years of hard, but rewarding Work. The courses are planned to give the student the widest possible background in the limited time available. The course covers basic electronics through com putor technology. The freshman eagerly undertakes atomic theory and from there pro- gresses into basic resistance circuits To facilitate lab experiments, theory and operation of equipment are studied Also, vector algebra is taken to give the student a firm grasp of elementary mathematical concepts . fx 1 S ? f ? . si' it 5.115 ln general, the sophomore year revolves around vacuum tube theory and the application thereof. To get off to a good start, the technician studies the operation and practical considerations involved in design of power supplies . From there he progresses into design and analysis of major AC and DC amplifiers . AM detectors, heterodyne converters and associated circuitry consti- tuted the remaining portion of the year. The net result of this knowledge came to its summit in the construction of the super heterodyne receiver. 155 w 1 'Sir ull -- --1 , ww! Advancing rapidly to the third year of the course, the juniors first studied semi-conductor theory and audio amplifier design. The bulk of the latter part of the year consisted of an indepth study of multivibrators with emphasis on analysis . Finishing the year with count- ing circuits, the junior tech- nician is prepared to delve deeper into the applications of these circuits . 19 1 3 3 It 9 'n , f b fx 4 .V 4. . A. Fundamentals of projection, lettering, pic- torial drawing and sheet metal drawing are stressed. By practicing these techniques he gains skill necessary to undertake more complex work. Before he attempts more advanced work the Sophomore student must learn the principles of military standard and true position dimen- sioning. After he has perfected these new skills, he can then apply them to more com- plex drawings . Industrial rafting 158 Besides Mechanical Drafting the student learns the principles of the calcu- lation and design of various machine member such as cams and gearing. To give him an introduction to the numerous specialized drafting fields he learns the fundamentals of piping, electrical, welding and topographic draw- ing . At the end of the year he is required to apply all his newly gained lmowledge to a complete set of working drawing. By individual research the student must develop a project given specification to a practical and workable set of drawing . In his jtmior year, he is given a primary course in architectural drawing, with a secondary course in surveying. Each student is given a house of which he is to make a complete set of drawings . These drawings include plot plans, ele- vations, and perspectives of the house. Before finishing the drawing, he must often refer to the Sweets catalogue in order to specify what type of lighting fixtures, windows, partitions etc. are needed in order to complete the house. In surveying he is taught how to level the property on which the house is to be built with the help of a transit. L ,af-- aV' W The drafting senior has an opportunity to use the skills and techniques he has accumulated in the past three years . He tests his skills in the more advanced areas of tool design, technical illustra- tion and rendering. In the area of tool design the senior goes through each step of design. He calcu- lates all specifications and decides which thread, bushing or clamp is most bene- ficial for the tool. I-Ie also specifies the metal which will be least in Weight and most efficient. Technical illustration gives the student ex- perience in inking and using lettering instru- ments . He learns industrial practices in illustration and can apply techniques he has already learned to make drawing pleasing to the eye and easily read. Rendering is a field in which the student applies his talent and skill in art and basic pictorial drawings . 161 Mechanica W. . L5 l ,1 . i . ' fi:-1' . I I ' The freshman year was devoted to the study of basic hand tools and machine tools . We also took mechanical drafting, blue print reading, and industrial safety. We applied this knowledge by making many small projects . Among these were the C-clamp. This involved squaring the part, mak- ing precision layout, drilling, tapping, lathe Work, and mill Work. 162 Technolog The sophomore year is spent in specializing the student in what they were taught in the freshman year. The projects of the second year are geared to prepare the student for the junior year. The sophomore learns how to operate some of the advanced machines, such as the pantograph and the verti- cal mill which he will use constantly during the next two years . When the sophomore year is done he is on his way to becoming a machinist. 163 The junior year is used for developing our imagination. Having learned the basics, We are now left to solve our own problems using the technology and skills We have developed in the freshman and sophomore years . The junior year is spent designing and building a Working model of our choice, which will be entered in the California State Industrial Arts Exposition for competive judgement. The theory for the junior year consists of advanced technology, Metallurgy, Machining Principles, Advanced Mechanical Drafting, Cost Controls, Unconventional Machining, and other subjects which prepare us for a career in Mechanical Engineering. 164 I As seniors We can look forward to taking Numerical Control Program- ming and operation. This is the study of computer controlled ma- chine tools . We will also study the use of carbide tools through ma- chineability tests. In these tests we braze and grind a carbide tool and chart the life of the tool during ma- chining. Hydraulic design and ftuictions occupies a major part of the senior year theory. Model Hydraulic sys- tems are built in the shop. Work done in the shop includes operating the Universal Cylindrical Grinder and the True -Trace lathe. Freshman shop covers a wide Variety of manual skills The student, new to each section, will find them all challenging. In the foundry section he learns the art of sand casting, mold preparation, metal pouring techniques, and a Variety of procedures that are fundamental to that field. He changes sections around mid-year, and begins learning the techniques of gas and arc welding. He is also taught certain safety prac tices . Machine shop is part of the freshman's course. He is instructed in the basic skills that every engineer should know. 166 Non-Destructive Testing comprises testing of materials by ultrasonic equip- ment, magnetic and penetrant inspection . Recently, the studies were modified to include testing of non-metallic materials Plastics, cement, and glass are included in Material Science . E l The sophomore year is divided into two main sections, Non-destructive and Destructive Testing. ln Destructive Testing the student tests mate- rials' strength, hardness, and other mecha- nical properties by damaging the specimen. The tension machine, the Brinell and Rockwell Hardness testers, and fatigue tester are only a few of the instruments required. X lil Zi Q3 '-,,,,,,.. -0- J-..a:Snsn-T- Metallography, Industrial Photography, and Heat Treatment are the sections for the junior year . Metallography is the microscopic study of the structures of metal. Specimens from the sophomore year are cut, mounted and polish- ed. Photomicrographs are taken on a metal- lograph as permanent records . Hardness of microstructures are tested by special instru- ments . Industrial Photography teaches the student to take and develop positives of his photomicro- graphs . They use many types of cameras employed by industrial photographers . In the senior year, the student studies Analytic Chemistry, and Spectroscopy. Analytic Chemistry covers aspects of chemi- cal analysis of various metal alloys . The student is trained in techniques and labora tory procedures . f The heat treatment of metal is an im- portant aspect of Physical Metallurgy. Any type of heat treatment can be done in one of the many high temperature furnaces . -s,-r Spectroscopy, studied during half of school year, allows senior students to make an accurate evaluation of an alloy by inspecting a film plate of the metal. These four years in Physical Metallurgy mold the student into a trained technician, preparing him for advanced technical study and industry . Photolitho graph As a freshman you are introduced to the basic elements that make up each area . Operation of the process camera, basic stripping prac- tices, and elementary instruction on the Multilith and Davidson presses make up the program for that year. These provide you with a basic understanding of the principles of lithography, their methods, and their applications to the Work you Will accomplish in the following three years . 170 l Proceeding into the Sophomore Year, additional practices are added to basic procedures . This includes an introduction to halftones, fpictures broken up into printable dotsj, basic composition and paste-up, along with chemical mixing. As for press, you're introduced to the methods of operating the larger equipment. Along with this you receive the fundamentals of commercial bindery operation, which includes the use of the 40 Seybold Paper Cutter, and stapling and folding equipment. 171 'F' X J Ei 33 R,-.1 L3 Nm ,fm V lg w v . As a junior, you no longer merely learn the principles of lithography, but rather apply them to your Work. You are given actual production jobs and thereby receive first-hand experience . However, this does not mean that the learning process ends here . You are intro- duced to basic color separation and new methods of composition. Also, color print- ing is learned on the small presses in addition to larger presses such as the Zenith 23. In the junior year, you are encouraged to think about which particular area you wish to specialize in as a senior. 172 l L-1193 J. we-,P H' 91 im' jf' ' F When the senior year begins you don't start on your specialized area right away, but rather rotate through the four stations as a review. First I would like to thank the staff, who Worked for long hours, sometimes on Saturdays and many times late into the night. BILL MCNAIR, layout editor, and his group: JEFF JONES, CHRIS PRIGA, MIKE INGRAM, STEVE GOODRICH, and JOE GAYOSO are respon- sible for much of the layout work. The sports section was done by GREG CARINGELLA and DON ELEY. Special thanks to ROD and TEO ALEMANIA for their art work and cover and to BILL TORLEY for the special events section. TONY KURPAKUS, club editor, and his assistant, TOM JOYCE and JOHN CONATY produced a fine club section. Next special thanks goes to MR. TOM MILLER and MR. DON SPRAGUE of Glenbrier Studios for their fine photography and fast service. Thanks also to our student photographers, JIM DOWD and MARK BARCLAY. Recognition must also be given to JOHN GRIFFIN, the Finance Director, who helped type and make layouts, as Well as organize our patron drive and keep the financial records straight. Thanks go also to our advertisers and many patrons who helped pay for this annual. Our dedication page was gratuitously furnished by KBF. To them We owe a vote of gratitude. The faculty deserves much credit for excusing members of the staff from class and for cooperating with us when it was necessary to take pictures. Special thanks also to the ladies in the office who helped us with our budget and with proof reading copies. During Christmas vacation a member of our staff came into Work so we could make a dead- line. The next day he was in the hospital, but he even offered to Work in bed to help get the book finished. KEN KUNIHIRO later died. He showed the spirit of the staff and We will al- ways remember him. I Want to express my deep gratitude to BRO. JOSEPH LOCKWOOD, our moderator. Even While he was in the hospital he watched over our efforts. He was the driving force behind our whole staff. His organization, enthusiasm and patience more than anything else, helped to make this book what it is. I want to thank MRS. KILSON for her typing. Thanks also to MR. JOHN THOMAS, Yearbook Representative, for his many suggestions which helped make our book so pleasing. MR. and MRS. BARCLAY deserve our thanks for their aid in the patron drive. I hope this book will help us all when it comes to a time to remember.
