Principal Dear Graduates, Yours is the tenth class to enter Bosco-Tech, and the seventh to graduate. You will now take your place with our other graduates in the field of industry or of higher technical education. The pace that these alumni have set and the achievements they have recorded are something of which we can all be proud, and stand as a challenge to you and to subsequent classes. In these days when we hear so much about schools pouring young men into the labor market unskilled and unprepared for the demands of the technological revolution grip- ping the industrial and business world today, and we learn that 57 percent of all men employed in 1956 will need re-training in 1970, it is most consoling to realize that neither of these tragic situations awaits you. The high level of training you have re- ceived not only equips you for a position, but assures you a quality and type of em- ployment that is vitally NECESSARY to our fast moving society, geared specifically to the trends of the space age, capable of weathering the storm winds of change blowing so fiercely through the world of work today. Moreover, the character formation and moral guidance that have accompanied such training will provide strength and en- lightenment as you face the problems of adult life. The qualities that your Alma Mater has endeavored to instill into you--devotion to duty, habits of hard work, respect for God's law and for those who share in His authority--coupled with academic and tech- nical proficiency, will bring you success and happiness in the life unfolding before you. Our prayers and best wishes accompany you. May God bless you always! - Sincerely yours, Fr. D. M. Firebaugh, S.D. B. 7 VICE PRINCIPAL '-4 'Z' ici, Rev. William Schafer, S.D.B. Simultaneous technical courses in drafting and designing, theory and safety are aimed at making the student a reliable, skilled craftsman. As in other Bosco-Tech shop courses , each trainee receives a planned program of leadership development and manual and technical training. FRESHMAN YEAR Technical knowledge of basic principles of woodworking, with an emphasis on hand tools. SOPHOMORE YEAR Centered around industrial machinery, both light and heavy. Mechanical work restricted to light operations. JUNIOR YEAR V Basic furniture designing and standard dimensioning. Study of traditional, contemporary, provincial, and modern furniture and wood finishing. SENIOR YEAR General planning in relation to mill section. Includes board measure, job layouts, standard construction. The second semester is Varied: emphasis on various fields of management, including general costs, time study and rate setting, stockbilling, routing, and general management. In addition to the curriculum outlined above, the advanced drafting course offers sketching, cabinet drawing, designing, rodmaking and detailing. 54 I ,xx , 5 rf, fu sau i nf Q., Richard Butcher and Richard Collins, sophomores, edge band with a high frequency electronic gluer. I DU TRIAL DRAFTING SHOP The Bosco-Tech Industrial Drafting Course is geared to familiarize qualified students with all the major areas of drafting in today's modern industry. The four- year course provides the student with technical theory as well as practical know-how and the leadership training which will enable him to achieve a responsible position, job security, and good earning upon graduation. Together with Bosco-Tech's pre- engineering academic curriculum, the student who desires may apply to a School of Engineering to further his education and prepare for a position in management. Whichever path the student chooses, that of immediate employment, or pursuit of higher education, the challenge of the world today demands active leadership by the engineer, designer and draftsman in shaping the future physical environment for the well-being of man. The Industrial Drafting Department is devoted to the training of young men equipped to accept this challenge. ERESI-IMAN YEAR Basic mechanical and machine drawing, use of the drawing instruments, the drafting machine, freehand lettering in all of the basic styles, graphical solutions to geometric problems, basic machine sketching, projection on right and oblique planes, intersection of lines, surface, solids, isometric projection, complete work- ing drawings, introduction to industrial safety. SOPI-IOMORE YEAR Fundamental problems relating to points, lines, planes, single and double- curved surfaces, advanced mechanical and machine drawing, intersections and developments, gears, cams, screw threads, advanced machine sketching, descrip- tive geometry, basic industrial safety. JUNIOR YEAR Aerospace drafting, structural drafting, architectural drafting, electrical and electronic drafting, technical illustration, allowances and tolerances, classifica- tion of fits, shop management, specialization in one of major areas of drafting, industrial safety from employee's viewpoint. MECHANICAL TECHNOLGGY SHGP The Mechanical Technology curriculum is designed to satisfy a dual program: a four year technical and a four year correlated pre-engineering, college preparatory course of studies. This training prepares the graduate to take an entry job in which he will be pro- ductive, at the same time, the broad, technical training, together with a reasonable amount of experience, should enable the graduate to advance to positions of increas- ing responsibility, and the foundation provided by the training should be broad enough so that the graduate can do further study within his field of technology. Graduates should be able to perform entry jobs requiring machining, tool and die making, and molding making, drafting and tool designing, quality control, parts programming, machinery sales. He may advance into mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering, planning and estimating, management. FRESI-IMAN YEAR: Use of hand tools, basic machine tools, inspection, basic drafting, blueprint read- ing, safety practices. The student is first taught basic or general service procedures. The program then moves ahead into such ad- vanced fields as oscilloscope trouble-shooting, dynamometer tune-up and specialized service procedures. FRESHMAN YEAR The first year familiarizes the student with the various components of the automobile. This is accomplished through directed bench work with the student learning the nomenclature, operating theory, the materials used in construction, and the correct disassembly and assembly procedures of the components. The new students are introduced to shop management through actual participation as student shop officers. The groundwork for future extensive safety engineering training is laid at the same time. SOPI-IOMORE YEAR In the sophomore year the student learns minor automotive servicing, including engine tune- up, brake service, carburetor service, and complete electrical system service. I-Ie also learns the operation of miscellaneous shop equipment, such as the lathe, grinders, drill press, hoists, etc. Stock room training is also included. Throughout the entire year the student continues in his course of supervisory procedures and shop management. The safety program continues and covers the rules and procedures for using various pieces of shop equipment. JUNIOR YEAR The junior year program includes service of the following units, automatic transmission, power brakes, power steering, air conditioning, brakes, and front end. In the Automotive Machine Shop Department the junior classman is instructed in cylinder reboring, pin-fitting and rod aligning, complete valve service and cam bearing installation. The tune-up department includes the basic tune-up procedures without the use of oscilloscope or dynamometer. SENIOR YEAR In his senior year the automotive student takes advanced tune-up. The advanced tune-up de- partment incorporates the use of the oscilloscope and dynamometer. The general trouble shooting and service department deals with engine and chassis service as well as miscellaneous services. The advanced electrical service department includes such topics of instruction as alternator, transistor, regulator and transistor ignition service. Diagnosing and trouble-shooting is the main theme of the senior program. INTEGRATED SAFETY PROGRAM As a part of his four year intense technical training course, the developing automotive tech- nician also receives a fully integrated course in industrial safety. As the automotive student en- ters the Upper Division, he begins to build upon the safety instruction received in the Lower Division by studying a college-level course in safety engineering presented from the standpoint of both employer and employee. 70 H - :W 3 ,X gk Q' 9 Y' 1 fi n- 4555 - A :IEU1 ' W 153 vw 1 ilhu-A , 5:f:,.aH?'j 3 1, f E -2 ,ff A ' 5' sei W S 5 r H UQ w ss ' N - F1 , Aly, ff ' Ui' f I fx' 1 -:L 'J' ' ,?aS1. -we ' 'fwiim A 'I' 3 ' 'K t , M 8' H!
