C6012 brave new worlaf that has such people init 39 Morality, behavior, legislation hold new meanings for Linda Goddard as she thinks about the civil rights revolution. Classes in Social Studies are really laboratories for future citizens of the United States and of the world. Students began their high school career with the study of the life of man and how he uses and is used by his environment. This was followed by an under- standing of government, especially our American sys- tem of representative government and the principles upon which it is based. In second year, where the emphasis is placed on world history, all were concerned with creating an ecumenical rather than a provincial attitude of mind. Heeding the words of Cardinal Suenens: Our century has thrown gigantic bridges over rivers, but it does not yet know how to build bridges from people to peoplef' students realized all too clearly that a mature world will only be achieved when the interdependence of each country upon the other is finally accepted. American history began in the third year where a genuine objectivity brought forth truthful evaluations of America's origins and development. These were followed by a dip into the countryis domestic and foreign problems. Two principles of the encyclical, '4Pacem en Terrisl' by Pope John XXIII stood out in sharp relief against the background of world prob- lems: the dignity and rights of the individual must be recognizedg error must never be confused with the person who errs. World peace and the continuing conflict with Communism was never allowed to grow dim as all watched the social revolution that gained such rapid momentum. Wide reading in civil rights pushed back the horizons of young minds and made room for the truly Christian duty: to do something about these problems through courage born of love.
