Math students, in all their search for inspiration, came one day upon the letters of St. Catherine De Ricci, Dominican of the six- teenth century. These delighted the hearts of the discoverersg for saint that she was, she did not despise the mundane things of life. Her knowledge of weights and measures, of prices, of the contracts of buying and selling was, indeed, wide and unusual. Algebra did not come easily to some freshmen, At the year's end when the unknown quantity was still unknown, they were glad to pass on to business arithmetic. Here the dollars and cents made sense, so it seemed. But Tenth Year Math brought the return of the unknown quantity and students blessed the theories of squares and angles. Fitting preparation for adult life was all this searching and solving. To think straight, to thing logically and unemotionally is to reap the fruit of those work-filled class periods and those equally labori- ous home work hours. Upholding the truth in the face of seemingly logical falsehood requires a disciplined, orderly mind. Equipped thus, may the Dominican graduate hold aloft the torch of truth that was lighted in her high school days. 'xi fin Q: l fd' 4.1 Rv -, Sister Mary Joyce, O.P. Mathematical knowledge and skill are the goals' that Virginia Driscoll hopes to reach in her Tenth Year Math class.

XVith a prayer for understanding and guidance sent heavenwards to St. Albert the Great, the Dominican scien- tist of the thirteenth century, freshmen set out to learn about tested knowledge. Microscopes, micro-projectors, charts and mounted specimens helped to tell the interesting story of Gods world. There was so much to learn and so much to do! Bunsen burners, test tubes, and dissecting needles became ready tools in the hands of the would-be scientists. Projects on plants and animals challenged the ingenuity of the individual students. Study of the human body with all its intricate func- tions had its proper place. By such means did the students learn to appreciate and understand tlnemselyes and others. In their well-equipped laboratory they found it easy to acquire the scientific attitude. Experimentation. cheek, and control became their watcliwordsl No superstitions, no prejudice, no doubt could there bel For truth must follow the scientific method!
