' f K n J ,ben ogeffer fo Qur Mrrenfs June, 1942. DEAREST MOTHER AND DAD: How can I tell you what is in my heart? As the second milestone in the road of life looms up before me, I find it fitting to pause and observe my emotions as they well forth from my inmost being in waves of gratitude. Yet, my feelings are so pro- found that only the gift of eloquence, which is not mine, could justly explain them. Bear with me then, dear parents, as I peer into my heart and show you what has been hidden there these many years. God bless you, for keeping me physically fit. My thoughts fiy back to that memorable day when I resembled nothing so much as a strawberry. After an in- quiring look, you laughed a little and told me I had the measles. Then, all the other childish affiictions set in, and you fought for my physical victory over each one. I can remember the troubled look in your eyes and I understood that I must get well to relieve that dreadful anxiety. It was then I was conscious of being loved and I was glad indeed that I was your little girl. Progressively, I outgrew the cloak of childhood and as you prepared me to don the garb of young womanhood, you ex- plained its dignity and the care I must exercise to be at all times a sweet, wholesome young lady. Now, as the result of your exhaustive care, I stand before you sound and fleet of limb, ready and able to progress down the road of life. You have placed at my disposal every opportunity for developing my mental powers and inborn talents. I am well aware of the privation on your part that has afforded me the luxury of attending a higher school of learning, and this above all has stirred me to be worthy of your goodness. You and I know that there have been times when I have come upon a hurdle too high to scale, a subject that seemed too big to digest. And still, with your ever present trust and confidence in me, I have emerged from the ordeal with banners waving, for your faith was a stimulant to my success. And now again I call upon that faith. For as I look into this new world and wonder at the place I am to take, I become terrified and the words NI can't', swell within me. Then a moment's refiection enlightens me with the truth. I have been trained in a business course for the purpose of serving humanity, and with this outlook, the world I feared fades into green pastures and conquerable fields. Thank you, then, for sacrificing so much that I might have this self-confidence. Morally, you have not only taught me what is right but also have given me the perfect example. What more can I say? You have been strict with me in my adherence to the laws of holy Mother Church, and as a result my faith is strong enough to withstand persecution and uphold righteousness. You have instilled in me a faith in God that rebels against vile acts of men who destroy God's creatures and break the F ather's laws for their own base and greedy reasons. By this same faith I know that these men will meet a just end by Godfs punishment. Now you see what has been in my heart while you watched me grow. I have 9

tried to say this same thing ever so often, but the words would mix with my mingled emotions and lodge in my throat. Mother and Dad, there isstill a tenderness I have not expressed and, try though I might, I can't tell you yitg, ,you have in- fluenced me. You are always near me, always reverenced, alwvaymszfcxgxz 'ffgour labors will be rewarded when the Lord looks down upon you With Hisi blessiriigsf and ad- dresses you proudly, f'Well done good and faithful servants. I ' Your loving DAUGHTER. tMargaret Colette Lynn.J g .., s .mn .mfmpreefpifion up UR four years have been completed. We stand'on the renowned .Uthreshold of life, ready to embark on our careers. But before We cross that threshold, we wish to express our gratitude to all who have made those years so fruitful. We will try our best to convey our feelings--but we know that never, never shall we be able to put into words the thankfulness in our hearts. First of all, we extend our sincerest appreciation to Sister M. Rose Gertrude, O.P., our Reverend Principal, and to the Faculty. We admire your patience, your perseverance, your untiring zeal. We realize that, at times, we must have tried that patience-and we wish to laud you for your courage, to apologize to you for any anxious moments we might have caused you. As we look back, all our little trials and discouragements seem infinitesimal compared to the joys of learning which you brought to us. And so, again and again we thank you. To those girls we leave behind us at Dominican, we give our thanks for pleasant companionships. You have helped to make our school days happy ones, and what greater service is there, than to bring happiness to others? To our beloved Dominican Commercial High School, we reserve a special place in our Hall of Gratitude. Within your four walls, we have learned many lessons- not from books alone, but from experience, and from the example of our teachers. We have learned the meaning of true Faith, we have learned how to practice that Faith, we know how to defend it against its opponents. To you, Alma Mater, we offer the utmost expression of appreciation. And to our parents, who have made it possible for us to enjoy all the benefits of a Catholic high school, we can not ever hope to show the depths of gratefulness which we feel. We can only say again, f'Thank you, and we know YOU will understand. Our ode of thanksgivingf' is finished. Looking back over all we have said, we realize again the inadequacy of words. The feeling that we have is too wonderful to utter. We shall say no more. But even though our lips can not give full expres- sion to our song of praise, our hearts will ever hum its glorious tune. May God bless all who have helped us on our way toward a successful life, a true, strong, happy life patterned after the Catholic Ideal. 10
