Richard Draper The carefree feeling of the hazy, lazy, crazy days’ of summer quickly dissipated as the final days of August 1988 brought us closer to the start of a new semester. Those last few days before the beginning of school were crammed with preparation for our return and with parties or activities intended to make the most of a departing summer. Whatever sense of melancholy we were experiencing at the exodus of the summer were eclipsed by the sense of loss we experienced when we were notified of the death of Richard Draper, fellow classmate and fraternity brother. On August 24, 1988, Richard Draper was killed in an automobile accident. Rich would have entered his junior year at Dominican College in September 1988. He had been a Marketing Management major. Richard was inducted into the Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity, Dominican’s Mu Chi chapter, in November 1987. During his short time in the fraternity, Richard advanced to the position of Vice-President of Pledging at the elections for fraternity officers in February 1988; a position in which he was responsible for the recruitment and instruction of new fraternity members. Richard’s term as V.P. of Pledging was successful. Eleven new members were inducted into the fraternity in April 1988. Richard Draper was an active member in the National Guard and an interested member of his communi- ty. He displayed a sense of duty to others by his involvement in extra-curricular activities at school and in his community. His interest in others and enthusiasm for life will be sorely missed. written by Christine Killian, secretary of Alpha Kappa Psi. Sr. Michele Nugent In May 1988, the student club Vanguard presented Sr. Michele with a plaque on which was inscribed ‘‘To Sr. Michele Nugent, A Gentle Woman with lov e and appreciation.”’ To be so perceived by the students was most appropriate. Her love and respect for them was evident in the excellence of her teach- ing, in her painstaking commitment to advisement, especially of the transfer student, and in her willingness to provide long hours of clarifica- tion of source material if so requested by any student, at any time. She loved and was loved. Sr. Michele touched the lives of her colleagues with her gentle power. Her commitment to the mission of Dominican College was an ever present challenge to her division and to the faculty at large. She worked tirelessly, with her associates, on the design and implementation of the General Education Curriculum which Sr. Michele viewed as a vehicle of intellectual excitement for faculty and students. She loved and was loved. The Board of Trustees has lost a devoted member and friend. Nothing, including her illness, could keep her from being an interested, participatory member. She loved and was loved. It seemed to many that Sr. Michele was ‘“‘snatched”’ from us too soon. It is our task to treasure the times we had with her and to remember what this gentle woman meant to us. written by Sr. Tina Marie Stocks
