The very discovery of America was connected with Mary: the crews of Columbus' ships chanted the Mgalve Regina every evening during their voyage to America. and it was from his flagship. the usanta Maria. that Columbus lirst sighted the new world. During the centuries since then. the story of Our Lady is written into our Coun- try's geography and our institu- tions. as well as in the hearts of the devoted followers of Mary. American Catholics. For example. in 18416 the Bis- hops of the linited States. assem- bled in the Sixth Council of Balti- more. officially chose Mary of the Immaculate Conception as the prin- cipal patroness of the United States.
