1952-1953 Time flies so quickly when we are young we rarely pause to notice the events occurring around us, but in future years we shall look back IO 1952-53 as the year we graduated, the year when: Rousing Democratic and Republican conven- tions were held in the sweltering july heat of Chicago . . . chlorophyll, the new wonder drug, was likely to he found in everything from tooth- paste to clothing . . . fahulous preparations were made for Queen Elizaheth's coronation in june . . . flying saucers periodically caused flurries of conjecture and mystery. Ike walked away with the election despite pollsters' predictions of a close fight . . . tension of presidential campaign was relieved by the in- tellectual humor of Democratic surprise candi- date Stevenson. In the fashion world, the dolman sleeve reigned supreme . . . petticoats grew stiffer and wider . . . the perky pony tail stretched into the horse's tail . . . tiny white angora hats com- peted with gay woolen scarfs. There were depressing moments. Korean truce talks halked over prisoner exchange issue . . . Sister Kenny died from paralysis after a lifelong hattle to help polio victims. This was the year when everyhody sang You Belong to Me, Glowworm, and Don't Let the Stars Get in Your Eyesf',' when crowds stormed the hox ofice to see Miracle of Fa- tima, Ivanhoe, and The Greatest Show on Earth ,' when Bishop Sheen was TV Man of the Year. Catholics throughout the world celebrated the 500th anniversary of the first printing of the Bible by Johann Gutenberg . . . Father Owen Francis Dudley, Catholic author popular among teen-agers, died . . . Pope Pius XII created 24 new cardinalsg these included Bishop Stepinac, whom Tito had lately released from prison . . . the Vatican decreed that plain water no longer breaks the Holy Communion fast. It was a great year for sports. Yankees again won the World Series, hravely managing to hold down the Dodgers, who carried the Series to seven games hefore howing out . . . U. S. gained the highest total of unofy5cial points at Olympic Games in Helsinki . . . Little Mo again placed jirst at Wimbledon . . . jersey foe Wol- cott relinquished world's heavyweight crown to Rocky Marciano in great performance. Nationwide depression among teen-age girls mounted higher and higher as draft calls be- came more and more insistent . . . 2c stamp replaced traditional lM2c stamp on Christmas cards . . . millions of Americans watched lirst telecast of atom bomb blast - and the Presi- dential inauguration . . . spirit of prayerfulness at Eisenhower's inauguration augured well for the success of the new administration.
