Dear Patron of all Catholic Schools, so great was your love for the young, the beginners, that you wrote your masterpieces for them. To you, who have systematized our religious thinking, we owe our philosophy of life, our fullness of love, our relations with our fellowmen. Your philosophy of truth, formulated 700 years ago, still applies to the problems of the modern world, for truth is eternal. just as the voyager seeking his destination would consult a reliable map, so may we reach our heavenly destination by consulting the unfailing guide of your teachings. We are humble in dedicating our yearbook to you, because you are so high in Gods favor. We are sincere, because we hope with all the fervor of our hearts that our book may in some small way aid you in your endless task of spreading the light of Faith, so that one day in all corners of the world the undying flame of Catholicism may burn incessantly and all men may bow before the holy name of God. 1. .A A-.'.' .,, '- A ' ' l 11. yt ff, 'A Q- ll, ' 4 . St. Thomas Aquinas 1 Gp ' E 5515 Jkuspicc 'mana ar a HIS EXCELLENCY MOST REVEREND JAMES L. CONNOLLY, DD., Ph.D. BISHOP OF FALL RIVER We are deeply and humbly grateful to His Ex- cellency, Bishop Connolly, for the fatherly interest he has shown in the youth of our diocese since he became our Bishop, His inspiring words are a chal- lenge to us to live to the fullest the Christian faith that is our proud heritage. We thank His Excellency for honoring us by his presence at our graduation. Receiving our diploma from the hand of our Bishop gives it an added value and makes our graduation day all the more mem- orable. 8 REVEREND EDWARD GORMAN, M.A. SUPERINTENDENT OF DIOCESAN SCHOOLS Our Diocesan Superintendent of Schools has zeal- ously striven to uphold the high standard of the schools under his jurisdiction. With patience and foresight, Father Gorman has developed a highly effective curriculum of studies. His friendly interest in DA., his generous words of praise when he as- sisted at our activities and his many other acts of kindness will be among the cherished memories of our school years. REVEREND TERENCE j. SULLIVAN, O.P. We have been proud and grateful to have a Professor of Theology from Providence Col- lege for monthly religious instructions again this year. Father Sullivan came the first Tues- day afternoon of each month to teach juniors and seniors. His keen sense of humor and ready wit have made his religion classes a pleasure, while his clear and vivid explanations of im- portant problems have been an inspiring force in making school life profitable and memorable. He has also given us much practical help in making the transition from school life to adult life. 11lls....-Q4 if REVEREND ANTHONY A. JURGELAITIS, O.P. Father Jurgelaitas, also from Providence Col- lege, taught sophomores and freshmen each first Tuesday afternoon and won top rating from them this year, his first in D.A. His friendliness and kindness appealed to the stu- dents and made them anticipate those Tuesday afternoon instructions. He was always willing and able to give advice to those who asked for it. Among the topics of his lessons, one of the most popular was his clear explanation of the ceremonies of the Mass. i FACULTY REVEREND MOTHER MARY OF CARMEL, O.P. Prioress SISTER M. DALMATIUS, O.P. Q Activities show best the spirit of a school, by their scope and the eagerness with which they are entered. Our patron, St. Thomas Aquinas, has an encouraging message for those of us who believe that school as well as life should not be all work and no play. In his voluminous Summa, he clearly states that recreation is a necessity, and that to engage in games with due moderation is a virtue, which we may call pleasant- ness . . But the fun could never be complete without friends to share in the joy of striving to make each undertaking a success. That is why the hub of things in D. A. is the chapel, where the best of all friends waits to receive us, to encourage, en- lighten, comfort, as need may be, but always to listen with the love of a true and unfailing Friend. Students are always dropping in at odd moments through- out the day: to say hello in the morning, to ask support in a crucial game or debate, to breathe a small prayer of thanks for a special favor, seniors especially to ask What next after graduation? or merely to absorb some of the comfort that comes with the company of a Friend Whos always sure to understand and to help. .' Are you trying to sound more heavenly, or are you just giving our ears a break? By now, orchestra members have learned to grin good-naturedly at such sly questions, as they go through the ordeal of loading bag and baggage in the elevator and toting their equip- ment from the orchestra room to the auditorium. They traditionally entertain us with special programs at Christmas, St. Cecilia's and St. Patrick's Day. Their agenda also includes playing at St. Anne's Nurses' graduation, and an operetta in March. As partial requirements for her laureate diploma in music, Gloriette Levesque Cleftb gave a violin recital in her sophomore year, completed her ensemble work with a concert in junior year, and finished a course in harmony in senior year. 39 -aq- :K- fLefz to rigbtbz A. DOMINILOG This yearbook will mean so much to us later on, muses editor-in-chief Sheila Smith, as she pauses in her work of planning the dummy to dream of the day when drawings, lines, pictures and copy will finally result in a candid record of the school year. We've tried so hard to catch in it the spirit of DA., the unity that makes our school different from all other schools. It's that atmosphere of working and playing together that makes Dominican some- thing special to us, that makes our theme of the year, 'A Dominican school is a friendly school,' so easy to live and to work out in our book. 5-1y'L'3 Ffh' Ex I . .2 I Z P ,Q 4 , ff' QI V, .J J D1 Q 'x if ,jf 9 These three conspirators show how they beguile wary subjects into their best smiles. Laughter and exercise are wonderful cure- alls, and wonderful foundations on which to build lasting friendships. Knowing this, our warm-hearted, fun-loving physical education teacher, Miss Nancy Walsh, has not only made her gym classes as purpose- ful and varied as possible, but has also put into effect a pet project, an Athletic Association to sponsor more sports for more girls in the school. Already an important factor of life in DA., the A.A. has organized intramural tourna- ments in ping pong, bowling, volleyball and basketball. By providing a common meeting ground for upper and lower classmen, the new sports program has fostered a spirit of friendly com- petition and enthusiasm, an immeasurable boost to school spirit and the theme of the year, A Dominican school is a friendly school. The A.A. meets every Tuesday night, func- tioning according to its own constitution. To remain in the club, each member must earn a total of four stars during the year: two gold for active participation in a sport, and one red for inactive or committee work. The fourth star may be either red or gold. A highlight of the year was the two-day camping trip to Girl Scout Camp Tattapanum in Dighton during mid-winter vacation. Here, fourteen girls with Miss Walsh had a hilariously good time as they made the most of every opportunity for fun offered by camping activities. ,vfv CBeloz1'J. Smiles from the champions. Winning live out of six games in the intramural volleyball tourna- ment, the Pelissiers romped to victory over the St. Laurents. Games were played every Wednesday afternoon in the gym. The winners received cham- pionship ribbons at an awards assembly in May. Besides the girls pictured below, these also were members of the winning Pelissier team: T. Her- nandez, G. Goyette, 1. Levesque, A. M. Berube, T. Dube, P, St.Pierre, 1. Pruchnik, and C. Malloy. I 40 .st ' x . VOLLEYBALL Up-up-up goes the ball, and up go forward line players after it, while the rest of the team tensely wait to receive it, in case of a fumble, and put it hack over the net. Volley- ball has long been a favorite in D,A., though this is the first year actual teams were formed. Now, as rooters wan- der in for the games, the gym resounds with cries of Set it up! Watch that line! Side out! Ann Melvin and Dolores Morrissette were referees, while Louise Pelissier and Geraldine Sullivan served as scorers. vaio . cf 5 . ' 3 X fAb01'eJ. Battered birdies and a very limited space to play in are no dis- couragement to these avid badminton fans, they happily swing away in any free corner they can find. Second row: Charlotte Deschamps, Grace Kel- ley, Ann Melvin, Manager, Sally O'Neil, Pauline Gagnon, Vivianne Gendteau. Annette Gendreau and Jacqueline Levesque were added to the team in midseason. Theres a reason for the smiles! The D.A. basket- ball team was this year unanimously voted into the Narragansett Girls' Basketball League by sports- writers and coaches of the other nine teams in the league. A favorite cheer of the team and cheerleaders goes: XY!hether we win or whether we lose, Here's a cheer wt-'11 always use, 'Fight, team, fight! ' This could be taken as the teams motto, for whether it's their good day or not, they play with the same fervor and the same friendliness towards their opponents. Regular hours of practice with tireless coach, Miss Wtilsh, have taught our players many things: a mastery of zone defense, cutting, screening, and blockade tactics, but the most important lesson learned was the art of living by a code of sportsman- ship, remembering that He who plays straight and hard wins even when he loses.
