THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN This picture was painted by El Greco in Toledo, Spain, in 1577. Those around the empty tomb are the Apostles. The Virgin, surrounded by angels, is assumed bodily into heaven. Supreme Pontift of the Universal Church His Holiness a 12 1215 W' Bishop of Rome Vicar of ,lesus Christ Successor of St. Peter Qezzfbfzzfbfz The tall, slender figure of the great Pope of Mary, His Holiness Pope Pius XII, a white sil- houette with arms outstretched to receive the whole world, dominates the scene of the extra- ordinary Holy Year l950, the year of the great return and of the great pardon. He is the Pope of the lmmaculate Heart of Mary, receiving episcopal consecration on May l3, l9l7, the very day of the first apparition of Our Lady at Fatima. How fitting it is that it was he who, on All Saints, Day, l950. in answer to the appeals of millions of his spiritual children, proclaimed the Assump- tion of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a truth revealed by Cod to the Apostles, a dogma of the Holy Catholic Church. 7, N J ,X fr '-Elf Grateful that we are living witnesses of this proclamation, which demonstrated the infinite power of Cod, the unbounded intercessory power of our Heavenly Mother, and the LYNITY of the Church as her eight hundred million children in all lands gave willing assent to the dogma: grateful too that we will always he able to remember how this extraordinary event took place during our senior year. we join with Mary's loving children all over the world in rejoicing in this triumph of hers, and we consider ourselves privileged in dedi- cating to her our l95l D0llll.lIl-!Og. l '1 ii il ' s l Q V4 E1 I ---.L A 1 His Excellency MOST REVEREND JAMES E. It is under his direction that as parishoners we form a united group, a family within the great family of the diocese and the still greater family of the Church. Like the Good Shepherd watching over His flock, our pastors patiently and untiringly work with us and for us. At Sunday Mass they unite us in the universal Sacrifice, they pray with us and explain the word of God, exhorting us to face with Christian courage the many problems of life. Consecrated and set apart as ministers of God to dispense His mercy to each one of us, our pastors are outstanding in their devotedness and their UNITY of purpose in turning all things to God. To them we owe all the gratitude we can show and all the cooperation we can offer. His Excellency MOST REVEREND .JAMES L. CONNOLLY, D.D. From the very beginning of the present school year we have been glad witnesses of your success in working to- ward an ever greater UNITY of thought and endeavor in your own class and in the entire school. We were sincerely pleased that you adopted the practice which is becoming a custom in Dominican Acad- emy, that of choosing a theme which not only appears in the yearbook but also permeates the school life of the entire year. By so doing, you are reaching two worth- while goals instead of only one. While your yearbook is a storehouse of school memories, as any yearbook should be, it also contributes in a notable way to the general good of the school. Your teachers sincerely appreciate this assistance. We will always remember you for your outstanding cooperation and loyalty, and we will keep you in our prayers that you may continue to be a source of unity and harmony in whatever position you may occupy through life. Particularly we ask the blessing of God and His Blessed Mother, to whom you are so sincerely de- voted, that your home life may bear this stamp of unity, which is the key to happi- ness. if I .19 ' ,' ,, 1 f.- ll . fi Ms as it z I 1? fn 4 5 REV. Here we gathered each morning for a rapid fire exchange of ideas and a last hurried look at assignments. Here we began our school day by the Rosary and religion class, followed by American history. We then set out for chem- istry or shorthand, Latin, bookkeeping or typing, not to mention the ever-varying activity period. One o'clock found us together again in our sunny homeroom for English and French. Classes ended at 2:30, but not the activity in our senior room. Extracurricular activities, especially journalism, kept many seniors busy till long after closing time. Homeroom memories are happy memories.
