What a time your staff has had putting it together! They say the first one is always the hardest. It has been a privilege, though, being able to put together this past year's pictorial history and we hope we will achieve our goal of presenting you with some pleasant ineiuories of learning and of fun. As you read through the Cardinal think uot, though, only of this past year, but also of what is in store for Dollarway High very soon, and for all the years to come -- a NEW BUILDING -- a GREAT FUTURE. Sr. Boys Basketball Victory seemed to be the motto of the Senior Boys basketball team during the season of 1957-58. It was a very successful year as the team proudly won the Jefferson County Conference. Their success was the result of many hours of practice and scrimmage sessions under the capable coaching of Coach Morris. Red Daniels will be remembered as high point man with an average of 20 points per game. Norris Yarbrough and Johnny Presley were runners up in scoring averages, while Billy Welch's speed put him in the spot where he was needed in every game. Larry Cato, a sophomore, and Bobby Piercy, a tall llth grader, showed promising capabilities for the team of '59, We were all proud of the honor the basketball team of '58 brought to our school. 34 ..-y,.g:CQ,b4.f'S' rggsgvaiq xii' lp!! X Jolene Ashcraft delivers her cam- paign speech at the Student Council assembly. Student Council The Student Council is made up of one elected representative from each homeroom in school from the seventh through the twelfth grades, plus the council president who must be a senior and who is elected by the student body. The purpose of the council is to represent the student body and to promote leadership and responsibility among its members and all students. The council, sponsored by Miss Ann Jiannas, is always one of the most active organizations on the campus. This year they sponsored the con- cession stand at the ball games, published a new Student Body Handbook to help students better understand the rules and regulations of our school, took part in the Teens for Polio Drive, and gave a Salk Sock Hop to help in the fight against stamping out polio. Most students will remember this party where the price of admission was that each guest had to have had at least one polio shot. 44 STANDING, LEFT to RIGHT: Lola Taylor, Elvie Smith, Martha Manuel, Jolene Ashcraft, Betty Caple, Howard Corder, Jennie Morris, Allene Vardaman, Pauline Goodnight, Mrs. Roberts, and Elizabeth Slaten. Future Business Leaders of America The Dollarway Chapter of the FBLA was formed in November, 1957. Mrs. Ruth Roberts, whose idea sparked the club, is sponsor. The pur- pose of the FBLA is to develop competent, aggressive business leader- ship, to create more understanding and interest in choosing business occupations, and to strengthen the confidence of FBLA members in themselves and their work. The club, getting off to a good start, voted on and carried out two projects. The one most remembered by the members happened at Christmastime when they gave boxes of food and clothing to a very needy family. Their other project, appreciated by the faculty, was carried on throughout the year as members offered their time to do typing and bookwork for the teachers. 45 Q Lola Taylor, FBLA President. 0009 90000 00609 000009 Lil 'Q A second period practice session.
