The purpose of this particular book will be fulfilled if it serves, in the years to come, as one link ina continuing and valuable record of our school system, if it helps to revive memories of some of the happiest days of our lives. As we have proceeded through this school year, so then may we relive it in memory 1 w,..w...,..',f. SC HROEDER OT for this year alone, but in appreciation of the many years that he has supervised the Dolgeville Central School, we gratefully dedicate the 1951 SLIPPERTONIAN to Herbert W. Schroeder. His contributions to the welfare of the community are secondary only to the educational pro- gress that has come as a direct result of his efforts. Few local organiza- tions lacked his membership and his influence was projected into all phases of social life, from the church to the Speelunkers Club. Although his outstanding accomplishments during the time that he was supervising. principal was the greatly expanded educational program that he instituted and promoted in the Dolgeville Schools, he will forever be remembered by the members of the student body for the understanding with which he coun- seled them, his ever present humor, and the satisfaction that they gained from their daily contacts with him. 3 Board Cf Education , Frank Dodge, Pres. He was demonstrating to Lois Cramer the prop- er way to hook shots , so that she might star on the Blondes basketball team. I knew that the elite must congregate in the diner for I saw many of my old classmates there. Seated at a table were Dr. Dayton Griffith, Ir. and his charming nurses, Marion Pye and Donna Borst They were discussing Miss Pye's recent visit in New York City with Barb Dolge, who is private sec- retary to Ver Miller. Ver owns the New York Yankees, lock, stock, and DiMaggio. In a corner booth, Lucius Jeffers and Harold Cool, two of the modern push-button farmers, were viewing a television program. CThere is one in every booth at Salvie'si J On the screen the talented actress, Reggie Stankevitz, was emoting in scenes from Shakespear's Hamlet . She was giving out with enough ham so that each customer had a double order on rye! Next the great tragedienne was interviewed by Betty Jarrett, once a nurse, but now the golden voice of T.V. A musical interlude followed. Music was furnished by Fish Metzler and his Adjatators. In another booth were the former Misses Alma Dodge and Earlene Metz--now both happily mar- ried. They had just returned from a lesson at Alice Clark's Cooking School, where at last they had discovered how to boil water without scorching it. On the screen of their television set,I witnessed scenes from the Dolgeville High School. The program was sponsored by Sal1y's Sewing Center , where they meet to pleat . This center is owned by Sally Pugliese, but she gets help from Lura Lyons. QMore men are sewing lately.J The faculty of the school included Bob Squeek Tanner, math teacher extraordinary! Beverly Nichols, dispenser of science g and Col. Roy Pius Stonesifer, teacher of southern history and civil war psychology. Entering the school with her children was Mrs. , formerly Janet Lill. The fam- ily was dressed in Sunday best to have their pictures taken by Miss-Rose LeClaire school photog- rapher. Down the corridor I saw Pat Pugliese repairing a drinking fountain. Next the scene shifted to the gym, where Handsome Harry DeCarr, head coach, was putting his basketball players through their paces. He introduced, as a perfect example of good conditioning--his ex-teammate, Nick Miller, star of the world champs, the Irondale Aggies. The program ended as Street Commissioner Dean Galusha entered Salvie's . Dean had been repairing a broken water main in front of Keller's Hotel. Dolgeville's newest, this inn has many in- novations, including a pool parlor, operated by your one and only Beansie Rickard. Upon leaving Salvie's I spied a sign which read, Smith and Antonucci's Taxi. If you want to get there fast, call Loug and if you want to there, call Dusty. On my way home, an idea occured to me that I had never before thought of. The old home town just wouldn't be the same without the remains of the class of '51. Q-?1'TL- HE Blue Devils went right to work in the first game of the 1950 baseball season, and kept on moving until they were handed their first defeat by the Giants of St. Iohnsville, 8-6. The Bynonmen looked as though they might be out of the running for the league title when they lost the following game also. At this point, Dolgeville was in second place in the M.M.V.I. League, with 4 -E a standing of two and two, while St. Mary's of Little Falls was in first place 333 ,mx with four wins and no losses. However, the Blue Devils came back to chalk up S YQ, a win over the league leaders, thereby showing the rest of the league that they N if W were not done yet. 5 'ttyl From there in, Dolgeville had to win all the remaining games and had to - beat St. Mary's for the last one in order to win the championship. That they a1--- - - most did, loosing only that final game to St. Mary's. The team looks good for 1951, with the entire starting team returning, and Q9 a second year coming up for most of the pitching staff. In the 1951 season, there? ga K is a good chance that they will win the league title that they lost by such a nar- 4 'i J row margin in 1950. 0 Home SCORES Away KS OPP DQ-S OPP 7 4 Fort Plain 6 7 lg 5 Canajoharie 14 5 Q' Q 8 St. Iohnsville 7 2 :tg 8 5 St. Mary's CQ 4 9 :W 9 354 -X f fill: 9 l K tx -s Q A 'I' rx-L' uw. 'fret are WgI'S.3 Wein - ONTINUING a three game winning streak started last year, the Dolgeville Blue Devils began the 1950 football season by shutting out last year's champions, West Winfield, 32-0. Off to a good start, they kept right on going by next defeating Richfield Springs, 25-7. During this game, excellent play by Cool and Weinschreider, tackles, D. Smith and R. Metzler, guards, Rickard and Nagle, ends, and MacCarthy, center, kept the opposition's score to a minimum of 7 points. Several touchdown marches were staged by Dolgeville,,one of which went 70 yards for a score. Two excel- lent punts by Cuda, in the latter part of the game, kept the opposition in its own territory. In the following game with New York Mills, the Dolgeville Blue Devils rolled to a 27-0 win. Going on to Morrisville, they took the Midstate Conference Title to the tune of 40-0. Pat Pugliese, halfback, ran more than 90 yards for a touchdown in this game. Nick Miller, the other halfback, also ran circles around the opposition, coming up with two touchdowns and four extra points. After winning the title, the Blue Devils finished a very satisfying season by defeating Canajoharie, 60-0 with Pugliese and Miller each getting three touchdowns. In addition to winning the championship, our boys were rated the best defensive team in the area, which includes Little Falls, Ilion, and Glovers- ville, having had only seven points scored against them. On the offense, led by Miller and Pugliese and sparked by DeCarr, our quarterback, they were excellent also, having scored 184 points against the opposition. While the Blue Devils unbroken string of eight victories is an excellent record in itself, the fact that in seven of these victories the opposition was held scoreless makes the rec- ord something of which to be extremely proud. 33 Varsit Basketball Gaetano, Miller, Nagle, DeCarr, Pugliese Patterson, DeNinno, Cuda, Coach Bynon, Daley, Fehlner, Metzler unior Varsity Basketball Flsk Mlller, Metzler, Youker, M-olinaro, ' ov Br11l, Randall, Costanza, Flcal, Walczak, McCarthy, P 34 ' GC Varsity Cheerleaders wif , 3 H , , , - - n If Me ro 0 I-V Cheerleaders SUCH? The Music: Dept. HE history of our present music department dates back to the 1920's when the only musical activity the school boasted was a three part girl's glee club. Soon, however, the famous Aspirin Quartet was introducing close harmony to the student body, and a chorus was beginning to build from small groups of interested students. Even though our present chorus boasts 130 members, 65 of whom are boys, the chorus of 1938 has so far been the most outstanding, having received a sectional I, a state II, a national III. Our first orchestra, composed of five members, made up in sincerity of purpose for what it lacked in number. Under the di- tinuing to its present number of 50 capable musicians. At no time since its formation has the orchestra been rated lower than a II, and the 1938 orchestra made the state finals. The year 1935 marked the beginning of the string orchestra, which was started, and has continued under the direction of Mrs. Ethel Doxtader. Mrs. Doxtader's work has not only improved the string section of the orchestra, but has resulted in a 40 piece string orchestra, which plays annual- ly at the Christmas concert, P.T.A. meetings, spring concerts, and county festivals. The senior boys double quartet was formed two years ago when these boys first showed inter- est in close harmony and barber shop singing. The senior girls double quartet became interested in four part singing as juniors, and along with the boys, has entertained various groups and organ- izations. In 1935 the Board of Education hired the first band director for the Dolgeville schools. The following year on Memorial Day, the people of the village gathered on Main Street to see the first high school band ever to wear the Dolgeville school colors. Fifty students in new royal blue and white uniforms marched proudly down the street led by their director, Mr. john Albrecht. After the death of Mr. Albrecht, the band was kept alive through the efforts of Mr. Lembo, Mr. Fazio, and Mrs. Tanner. It was this group that Mr. lack Brunner found when he joined our faculty three years ago. Mr. Brunner has since organized a football band, a marching band, and a concert band. Last May, seven pupils who entered the State Contest received I, three received II's, and two pupils re- ceived III's. The music department that this school has today did not simply grow from the interest of stu- dents, but has resulted from the untiring efforts of Mrs. Tanner. Her work has inspired countless to continue in a musical career, and given hundreds a hobby that provides pleasure for others as well as themselves. Although she has done more than her share in expanding our educational pro- gram, and although her efforts have built up the prestige of this school among other schools, the help that Mrs. Tanner has given us has never been confined to the music department alone. Through her sympathetic understanding many students have found their way over rough places and have con- tinued to a better and happier life. 38 rection of Mrs. Tanner, membership began its upward climb, con- Senior Double Quartette SOPRANOS ALTOS TENORS Barbara Dolge Donna Borst Louis Antonucci Betty Jarrett Ianet Li11 Ronald Gaetano Lura Lyons Marion Pye Roy Stonesifer Sally Pugliese Regina Stankevitz Charles Weinschreider BASSES Dayton Griffith Richard Metzler Nick Miller Robert Tanner 39 String Grchestra Row 1: Row 2: Row 3: R. Relying on its general aim of sponsor- ing activities for the benefit of the school, this group has acted as a clearing house for class projects, planned and organized school assemblies, aided in fire drills and visiting days, obtained busses for out of town games, and sponsored student administration days. This group has also found time to propose and further the Youth Center, an undertaking which has undoubtedly proved to be the Council's greatest accomplishment. The year 1944 marked the beginning of the Student Council Scholarship fund which, to date, has grown considerably. The Organization hopes to raise the present amount to the point where a sub- stantial scholarship may be provided to a deserving member of the graduating class each year. The Student Council, as we know it, has become an organization around which our en- tire school life revolves. 42 Press Club Bailey, Daley, Dodge, B. Dolge, S. Although each of these five years made its contribution in added fea- tures or extended coverage, 1950 marked the year of greatest progress. A new feature of this is- sue was the very handsome division pages designed by our art department. But most important of all, last year for the first time, the SLIPPERTONIAN appeared in regular book binding, a bind- ing made distinctively ours through the generosity of the Daniel Green Company. We have entered the last two issues of the SLIPPERTONIAN in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association contest, and we are proud to say that again the 1950 edition scored by winning second place in national competition with 820 other books representing 44 states. The SLIPPERTONIAN is prepared in every detail, from dummy to completed paste-up, by the members of the staff. Staff members decide on the materials to be included, plan the layout of each page, arrange the photographic schedule and work directly with the photographer at all times, prepare, edit, and type all copy on special paper, and working to one thirty-second of an inch, mount all the materials on the master sheets to conform with the original layout. It takes an av- erage of sixty-four extra-curricular hours per staff member to put an issue of the SLIPPER- TONIAN in the hands of our printers. But the life of a staff member is not all work. The 1950 staff concluded their year with a dinner party at the Manor, and at that time received their C.S.P.A. pins. For the first time in the history of the SLIPPERTONIAN, five senior editors attended the annual E.S.S.P.A. convention held in Syracuse last October. Here they saw and learned more about yearbook publication than they realized possible. With the knowledge gained there, and a desire for a better and more com- plete yearbook, it is their wish to make the work of this year top all preceeding years.
