PHUPHECU Last week I R1chard F Loucks declded to make a survey of the last homeroom that I sponsored It was you may recall Just after graduatxon of the class of 1949 that I had a nervous breakdown Smce that txme I have been dxhgently pursumg my present task of vendmg apples candy and used tng books At each v1s1t wlth my former students I was greeted ln a fnendly manner and succeeded ln makxng a sale Grac ous what a change ten years can make' My fzrst stop was at the dormclle of Anthony Morra Mr Morra IS now head coach of Tlddeleywmk Tournaments at Bungtown Academy Next door I found the 19 room bungalow of the Oscar Pxndars where I was greeted by the thlrteen llttle Puxdars and tl'e1r mother the former Betty Ortheb I was extended an xnvltatlon to a sneak PREVIEW of her argyle sock which was started ln 1949 Due to cucumstances beyond her control fbmdmg offj the sock has now attamed a length of ten feet Across the street I knocked on the door of Bemard Bahr s home I knew lt was hxs house because the door was 8 feet hxgh I was mfonned by the thxrd Mrs Bahr that Bemxe would not be home from hxs posmon at the olxve stuffmg factory untxl mldmght As I stepped out Lnto the street once more I was almost run down by a hopped up model A drxven by that famous raclng drn er Mary Mantn At the same tune Jlm Broats mllk truck wh1zzed by Jxm advertlses mxlk from contented cows h m m wonder what keeps them contented' As I passed the offxce of the of the Gressler Cartwheel Factory I met Clara Nickerson pnva e secretary to the bxg wheel hxmself Across the street I espned that world renowned commerclal artlst Wmme Houser workmg on a 35 foot Burma Shave slgn m three colors and fue dlXl l6l'lSl0l'lS Next I passed the Honest John Patterson used-car lot H15 motto rs Sat1sfact1on guaranteed or your antl freeze cheerfully refunded Around the block I halted at good old D C S When I went by the offlce I heard Prmcxpal Francns Connor dxscussmg plans for the new school wlth Vmcent Trxpodl, Presxdent of the Board In the lxbrary I was greeted by Lols Ingersoll thxrd assxstant lnbrarxan m charge of overdue books She really IS a busy g1rl Wh1le I was there George Van Valkenourg entered m pursunt of a rare reference book Our George ms domg scxentxfxc research on the possxbnhtnes of feedmg rubber plants to chxckens purpose unbreakable eggs Some yolk' Later as I was gomg down the hall I met Josephme Pxlottx Jo 15 musxc supervxsor now and ln her spare tune she organizes double quartets down at Louxe Walter s Bxlhard Parlor Before I left I stopped off to say Two blocks down I came to the Club Can Can operated most successfully by Dxck Delaney aided and abetted by the terpsxchonan art of Queeme 1Nardo and her own special skm game Upstairs over the club IS the combmatxon barber shop and bookxe Jomt operated by Jasper Wexr As I went out I passed Dlp Contmo but what a changed man' He hasnt been the same sxnce he bought that fnlhng statlon 1n Sahsbury The next busxness estabhshment I vxsnted was the radlo shop of Arnold Brown Arrue advertxses h1s latest mventlon-televxslon that smells I found out that xt sure dld Before me on the te'ev1s1on screen were two of my former students who are now wlth the Barkem and Bxtem Cxrcus Roar Lyon IS sellmg Squeezer perfume and Neckem wafers Rudy Yatarola ns the wlld man from Bomeo he hasn t shaved xn nme years Travelhng wxth the same cxrcus IS Lefty Carpenter He twlrls baseballs all day and sells the pnzes he wms to semor classes to be raffled off Well I saw all but two of my students-George Near and Phy.l1s Nxchols I hear that George IS owner of the only constructlon company ln America that uses Model A s exclusxvely He ns drawxng up plans for a canal to connect the Gulf of Mexxco and the Atlantxc Ocean but hes stymxed he cant fmd a good place to put xt Phyllxs IS cooklng at a lumber camp where her husband 15 cuttmg trees especlally selected to makmg toothpxcks for left handed Irlshmen After seelng how my last class turned out I am of the opuuon that they are no worse for the tune and effort I spent on them A heartenmg thought' P ' an Va I J 5, 'QQPQE M, f is X955 5 George r 1 1 ' v I . , , l .
