In the thrilling sagas of yesteryear we read about the Forty 'nners who struggled on to ultimate glory despite the hardships and tribulations that beset them on xery hand The 20th Century has its own Forty nmers the class of 49 vxhose history I herevt ith record for all posterity The class of 49 can lay no claims to uniqueness during the years p ecedmg high school but for that matter neither can most clas es The high school years are what bring out the individuality in a class and set it apart from all of its predecessors But in Ceptember 1943 this class entered the Freshman year of its career One section vtas encamped in Room 10 under the superxision of Mr I-Iardendorf, while the remainder skipped off to Study Hall with Miss Diamant In the Cophomore year the class was merged into one group under Miss Wilkinson That year its mayor activity centered around the Queen of Hearts dance a pretty Valentine affair t which Norma Katcher was crowned queen for the ex emng This initial yenture mto the realm of high tschooll finance sent the Forty nmers on into their Junior year with a lust for gold Ah to be in Room 15 now that Esthers there From this little paraphrasmg of a beautiful xersc anyone familiar with the story of the class would immediately recall that the Junior year vsas spent in Room 15 under the guidance 1 J of Miss Keidel 'Ihts valiant lady presided over the activities of the class as it breezed through its dances prom yearbook and other money the class Bernie Bahr also became eligible for the purple heart when some over anxious hun er tprobably looking for a skunkj shot him September 1948 found the class on the last lap of its your-ney through school At th1s time it was promoted to the sanctuarv of Room 14, and Mr Richard F Loucks Under his steadying ha nd the members settled down to the task of making their bank book balance to the tune of a trip to Washington and New York While thus engaged they became adept at every type of door to door selling Stationery magazines candy bars baked goods raffle tickets all were duly sold and slowly the money came m Along toward the middle ofthe year the income seemed to be waning so they sponsored a concert by the Utica Syrnphonette which not only brought in a nice sum of money but also exposed many of the students to their first taste of classical mus1c One ex ent yet to come is their Senior Play, for which they have chosen Jumor Prom Along with all of their money making pro1ects they found time to spread a little cheer in the form of a Christmas decoration contest The social life of the Forty mners was practically non existent up to their Senior year But as Seniors they held a fine Christmas banquet at Dopps Inn Presents were exchanged and Mr Loucks was both surprised and dismayed when the Four Roses box he received contained only a quart of milk This anti climax was recorded on film by Flash Yatarola for all to see They have also planned another banquet to be held at the time of their graduation The class attended a presentation of the Broadway musical hit, Oklahoma in Utica and all who went to see it agreed that it was an exent they would always remember Through the years of high school, the Forty runers have diminished in number from forty three to twenty seven This has erved only to umte them more closely into a body of young people worthy of recognition Now they are ready to take their place in the vnorld to write more chapters in their own history and that of their nation X-4 Eur 6 I7 E I I J D V V V V V , .
