SOCCER BOWL Captains Paul deMoor. Andy Mclntire, Dean Haage, and Joe Sheenn celebrate Doherty ' s thrilling victory In the District playoffs, Doherty triumphed over both Wachusett and Leominster. After those victories, Doherty moved on to the District 111, Division 1 final against arch rival, Marlboro. The team played a spirited game and won by a 2-1 margin. From there they went to the state semi-finals and unfortunately lost to Wellesley. The team was led by high scorers Paul deMoor and Leo Varetas, with the strong support of the District III. Division 1 Most Valuable Player Billy Vasiliadis. When a spleen injury put Andy Mclntire out of the playoffs, Coach Robert Sundquist found it necessary to train a new goalie. Team member Mark Hamel volunteered and played superbly under the circumstances. The brevity of the team ' s existence is less remarkable than the distance they travelled — from non-existence to state semi-finalists in four short years. Coach Sundquist and all the players should be praised for their accomplish- ments. We wish them luck in the future.
