1981 Dr. Leo T. DOHERTY MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL 299 Highland Street Worcester, Massachusetts Class of 1981 DEDICATION In the middle of the road of our life, we found ourselves, like modern-day Dantes, approaching the doors, which seemed to whisper, Abandon hope all ye who enter here. ' There we found. without difficulty, our Virgil. Timothy Kelly has successfully guided us, with patience and concern, through the labyrinthine passages of senior high. Listening, advising, always smiling, he rekindled hope. He has aided in the avoidance of pitfalls, in choosing the right courses, in planning a future. For all his kindness and good humor. for his hours of listening, for his devotion to us, we, the graduating class of 1981, dedicate to him, with all our love, this yearbook: Memories of our times with him. Andy Mclntire, Dean Haage, and Joe Sheenn celebrate Doherty ' s thrilling victory In the District playoffs, Doherty triumphed over both Wachusett and Leominster. After those victories, Doherty moved on to the District 111, Division 1 final against arch rival, Marlboro. The team played a spirited game and won by a 2-1 margin. From there they went to the state semi-finals and unfortunately lost to Wellesley. The team was led by high scorers Paul deMoor and Leo Varetas, with the strong support of the District III. Division 1 Most Valuable Player Billy Vasiliadis. When a spleen injury put Andy Mclntire out of the playoffs, Coach Robert Sundquist found it necessary to train a new goalie. Team member Mark Hamel volunteered and played superbly under the circumstances. The brevity of the team ' s existence is less remarkable than the distance they travelled — from non-existence to state semi-finalists in four short years. Coach Sundquist and all the players should be praised for their accomplish- ments. We wish them luck in the future. (upper left-hand corner) Jotin Charalam- bidis goes after the ball, (upper right-hand corner) Doherty and Marlboro players struggle to gain control, (bottom right-hand corner) Dean Haage gets ready for a big play. Through the patience and guidance of Arnie Lohman, our Hunter Publishing Representative, we made great strides in learning what was involved. We would like to thank the entire Publications class for their effort and dedication. Three outstanding star members were Jonathon Reck, Lisa Teixeira, and Susan Monahan, Without their great efforts this yearbook might never have been published. We also extend a special tribute to Peter Finn, Neil Grossman, Andy Riley, Melinda Packard, and Steven Berkovitz who, although were not members of the Publications class, were always available. At this time, we would also like to thank our advisor, Mr. Cornelius Doyle, who has devoted fourteen years to the Hilander. Our business matters were handled by Mr. Phillip Herman and Mr. John McGill. Finally, we wish to express our most sincere gratitude to our photographer, David Hilton, of Hilton Studios. Our experiences as editors ranged from drawing lines on hills for an outdoor class picture to drawing lay out sheets. We ' ve enjoyed the challenge and hope we fully captured the spirit of the class of 1981. KENNEALLY A Man . who saw wrong and tried to correct it. . who saw unhappiness and tried to con- sole it. . who saw discontent and tried to create harmony. . who at times was misunderstood. . whose voice sometimes did not express what his heart truly telt. . who dedicated his life to education, his family and his church. whose sense of humor brought a pleasant smile to everyone he passed. . who accepted many difficult tasks wil- lingly, and gave of himself to achieve im- possible goals. Tim Kelly Scholar . . . Teacher . . . Administrator . . . Humanitarian . . . Friend For your sincerity and integrity we respect you . . . For your wit and humor we thank you . . . For your years of dedication and service we pay tribute to you . . . For your example of gentlemanly principles we feel indebted to you . . . We have had the privilege of being touched by you! May our lives reflect this honor! Edna McNamara The death of Mr. Joseph Kenneally, Principal of Doherty Memorial High School, was a profound shock to the entire community of the Worcester Public Schools. Such a loss creates a gulf among the principals of Worcester ' s sec- ondary schools which will be difficult to fill. I knew him as a fellow teacher in 1950 at Providence Street Junior High School. Together, I as Principal, and he as Assistant Prin- cipal, planned and implemented the opening of Doherty Memorial High School in 1966. I knew him well. He was a close friend, but more, he was a friend and pleasant companion to his fellow teachers and administration. He had a deep interest in the educational and personal welfare of the students with whom he worked. As a professionally trained and highly skilled public school administrator, his loss will be felt by us all. Our sympathy goes out to his family and friends. Dr. John J. Connor, Jr. Joseph T. Kenneally set for himself a goal to satisfy everyone. The demands on education today make this goal almost impossible to achieve. Nevertheless, he worked hard in attempt- ing to achieve it. We who knew him will miss him and the Worcester School System will suffer from the loss of his ef- forts and his experience. Pasquale J. Quitadamo From a student ' s perspective, there are two thingswhichquicklycometo mindwhen Ithinkof Mr. Kenneally. He always had a great deal of pro- fessional pride and he was obviously quite proud of being the principal of Doherty High School. While mingling with students at athletic events or while on the dance floor at the school ' s proms, Mr. Kenneally always displayed a sincere affection and understanding of the school community. The second thing that comes to mind is the many conversations I had with him. Whether I was speaking with him of personal or school related issues he consistently kept a friendly and open attitude towards the student view. I will always reflect on Mr. Kenneally as a fine per- son who has made a significant contribution to his high school and to the students who have at- tended it under his leadership. David A. His distinctive laugh and forever broadening smile is an unforgetable trait im- printed within us. Let ' s not say so long Mike, let ' s say we shall meet again . . . and we will. Live for today, for today is often missed while planning for tomorrow. — your friends IN MEMORIAM Let us remember her as the Unblossomed Rose. A kind, loving and caring human being who always tried to help others. Her name was Helen Genkos, a dear friend to all of us. To some she was the smiling classmate who could cheer anyone up with that sparkle in her eye, and yet to others she was the girl who taught us the value of life, she was our hope for each and every beginning. A girl full of courage and strength who was always there to pick us up when we had fallen down. Helen, you have taken a part of us with you, but until we meet again, Thank You for being a Friend. Having withstood the degrading comments by the press, a deter- mined team, led by Terry Walles, Denny O ' Leary, Matt Johnson, Jon Erickson, and Kevin Morrow, once again met Marlboro on the field. The players proved worthy time and time again as enthusiastic Hilander fans cheered them on to victory. The 14-12 win as- certained that we not only deserved to be there but we belonged there.
