Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1985 volume:

Uh . . . definately original! Literary critics The thumbodies are cute. A 10-yr. old girl A classic in its time. A critic-to-be 'The best of its kind I've ever seen! Anonymous Is it over yet? Joan Amy Well, it survived to see 1985. A George Orwell fanatic DODGELAND HIGH SCHOOL JUNEAU, WISCONSIN m Well after two pages, so far so good!! Page 2 is reserved for Dedications, to whom we worked to create this 1985 edition of REFLECTIONS, Pur- ple Reign . As Prince dedicated his movie PUR- PLE RAIN to his father, we include our parents in the dedication of Purple Reign . We first thank our moms and dads. For 18 years they have fed us, sheltered us, clothed us, yelled at us, and also taught us so much, and helped us whenever possible. For many of us, including your emotionally disturbed editors, we need our parents often; for support, when we are ready to fall; advice, when we are confused; kleenex when we cry, and money, whenever. We may never say it, but we do appreciate the attention. We now begin our own life, of adulthood, and we thank you for all the time, etc. you have spent getting us this far. We recognize two individuals who ended their year at Dodgeland this year as we did. We thank both of them for everything they gave Dodge- land. They have graduated with us. First of all, our faithful Dodgeland School Dis- trict secretary of seventeen years, Mrs. Tillema, who has graduated to retirement. How little do we know all that you have done for Dodgeland. You assisted for seventeen years in holding our school district together. May your future be ful- filling, and may your memories of Dodgeland always live with you. Our final Dedicatee is Mr. Ken Sina, Dodge- land's choral director for the past three years. How rarely we told you how much we appreciat- ed all you did. You taught us not only to sing, but also taught us to find so many emotions through music. You brought back musicals to Dodgeland. Not only did you make them work, but you made them meaningful (CAROUSEL) and fun (BYE BYE BIRDIE). We thank you for touching our lives, for being a bright light through the dark- ness, and for teaching us so much. Good luck in the future, wherever it leads you. The memories of you at DHS shall live on in our hearts. You shall never walk alone. We now present to you this Purple Reign edi- tion of 1985 REFLECTIONS. Mike Berthold is a very rich and successful busi- ness man, though no one is sure what business he's in! Edward Hinzmann writes scripts at the BBC (Brit- ish Broadcasting Company) for the DOCTOR WHO show. Kevin Leistico is the 8th Doctor to be on the show. Someone who was mistakenly identified as Roni Jakel became the new leader of the Hell's Angels, but is now known that Roni really became a Commercial Artist. Lisa Johll was a Home Ec teacher at Rydell High (wherever that is) but she got fired for demanding that more cooking sherry ought to be in the budget. Becky Kuzniewicz married and lived happily ever after. Janel LeRoy collaborated with Leo Buscaglia on a new book, and also does some psychiatric counseling with Dr. Ruth Westheimer and Dr. Joyce Brothers. Laura Maas owns a bowling alley in Juneau that shows rock videos while you bowl, and serves free beer on Saturday nights. Jay Marquardt took after his brother — bought a nice family-type car, and cruises Juneau with it dur- ing noon hour. Jim Murray does ads for Mr. Coffee with Joe Di- Maggio. Lisa Rohde is leading the exciting life of a court reporter in Mad Town, USA. Debbie Roy and her daughter moved to San Fran- cisco where they collect favorite recipes of the stars and compile them into cookbooks. Joel and Mark Saeger are still brothers. Also part of the case were witnesses Jim Eng- els, Todd Schultz, Rodney Schultz, Steve Strode, and Eric Yarolimek. The team had great success over the course of the season, posting wins over such schools as Beaver Dam High DeForest High, and Waukesha South, before finally falling to a team from Hartland Arrow-Head by a margin of less than 5 points. Hart- land held Dodgeland from advancing to the state finals in Madison. At the start of the year 90 teams throughout the state participated in the Mock Trial Tournament and Dodgeland was at least the 8th best team in the state when the season ended. Al- though the squad is losing two attor- neys this year, hopes are high for next year's team as 6 of the 8 mem- bers of this year's team will be re- turning. Continued success to all of them. A first ever at Dodgeland was this year's Academic Decathalon team. These ten students, selected by the faculty, competed against other schools in a test including questions about Math, Science, Economics, Lit- erature and English, Fine Arts, and personal interviews and essay writ- ing. The team did well, advancing to the second level at UW-Green Bay. The team included Seniors Tom Kolb, Paul Kennedy, Joan Kennedy, Bruce Sharp, Janel LeRoy, and Steph- anie Kulke, and Juniors Kent Kohls, Cindy Kudak, Heidi Kasten, and Rodney Schultz. There were 6 lettermen returning from 1983. All totaled, D.H.S. fielded a squad of 9 seniors, and 4 juniors; so sophomores obviously had to fill out many spots. Many players played both ways; especially the lettermen. It was never said that Dodgeland stopped before the final whistle; but unfortunately we found ourselves on tne short side of the score in 9 out of our 10 games. Many individuals had fine seasons, especially Mark Davis who was the All-Conference Middle Linebacker. Named to the Second All-Confer- ence squad were Tom Kolb as a Defensive Back and Keith Wegener as a Receiver. Receiving Honorable Mention were Jeff King as a Running Back, and Wayne Johll as an Offensive Tackle. At season's end, the squad elected Mark Davis as the Most Valuable Player. Mark led the team in tackles in 1984 and was also the starting fullback for 2V2 years at Dodgeland. Wayne Johll was elected as one Co-Captain in '84. He started both offensively and defensively for 2 years and was a valuable lineman. Tom Kolb was the other Co-Captain. Tom came back from a summer- time broken leg to lead the squad as the Quarterback. He also played Defensive Back and ran back kicks. Although the overall record of the sauad was not what we had hoped for, there were some fine individual performances to remember for D.H.S. Football in '84. The cheerleaders had several fundraising projects this year, in order to raise mon- ey to go to cheerleading camp in the summer of 1985. For some reason or other, people always ask me questions about Sweden five minutes after I've said I'm from Norway. What a terrible insult! Because I'm from the country of the fjords, where Santa lives and the raindeers run around in the back yards! Unfortunately I come from a city (Olso), so I haven't gotten that close to reindeers. Neither had I seen too many cows before I came here. Now I've seen them all, the black, the brown, and the spotted ones. And I've learned a lot more about farming, farmers and farming community. It has been really interesting and educational! The small town was a new experience, and so was all the stuff that goes on in school. We don't have school sports at all in Norway! I remember my first pep-rally here. It was really fun and very confusing. I went home, and told my family that we had had some peperone-thing in school! Football and cheerleading was also totally new to me. I could not figure out what was going on there with the guys jumping on top of each other. But I suddenly found myself cheering like crazy for our team! Also I've met so many nice people that it's going to be hard to say bye to. Many of you I'll never see again, and that's sad to think of. But I will come back to the U.S. And then I'll be allowed to drive, so I can come and see you. (fasten you seat belts!) There is SO many things I'll miss, chocolate chip cookies, brownies, tacos, MTV, excellent radio, and diet(?) ice cream! I think I'll be able to live without humidity, 60 below zero, and skunks. But you never know! Thanks to everybody that have done so much to make this a good, fun, educational year. I'll never forget you! If anyone ever comes to Norway, make sure you look me up! (We'll take a ride on the reindeers!) 93 Love, Cathrine (Katrina) Knudtzon sSl II I SOUND OF MUSIC r n % ■ pi « n rrMHHH r ft • x $ • □ L) n □ □ FRONT: Paula Westphal, Denise Onstad, Joanne Wiser, Jennifer Schmidt, Holly Westphal, Stephanie Linn, Marjorie Ward, Christine Cribben, Crystal Larson, Rose Cribben, Rachel Lauersdorf, Ronda Behling, Kelly Marquardt. And to this precise extent, we are much less than what we are. R.D. Laing THE POLITICS OF EXPERIENCE. We are all functioning at a small fraction of our capacity to live fully in its total meaning of lov- ing, caring, creating, and adventuring. Conse- quently, the actualizing of our potential can be- come the most exciting adventure of our life. - Herbert Otto The adult with a capacity for true matur- ity is one who has grown out of child- hood without losing childhood's best traits. He has retained the basic emotion- al strengths of infancy, the stubborn autonomy of toddlerhood, the capacity for wonder and pleasure and playfulness of the preschool years, the idealism and passion of adolescence. He has incorpo- rated these into a new pattern of develop- ment dominated by adult stability, wis- dom, knowledge, sensitivity to other people, responsibility, strength, and pur- posiveness. — Joseph Stone and Joseph Church CHILDHOOD AND ADOLES- CENCE I am no longer the person who walked in this morning. I'm something new because I experienced something new with you. This is why learning is such an exciting thing, why it shouldn't be a drag. Every book leads you to new books. Every time you hear a piece of music, there are ten thousand new pieces it introduces you to — you listen to one Beethoven sonata, and you're lost! You read one book of poetry, really hear it, and you're lost! And then there are thousands of things to read, to see, to do, to touch, to feel. And each one of them makes you a different human being. So are you really what you are or are you what you are learning and what people have told you through time that you are? — Leo Buscaglia of life, of death, of childhood You can understand people better if you look at them — no matter how old or impressive they may be — as if they are children. For most of us never mature; we simply grow taller Happiness comes only when we push our brains and hearts to the farthest reaches of which we are capable . The purpose of life is to matter — to count, to stand for something, to have it make some difference that we lived at all. — Leo Rosten of learning, of hope, of becoming Oh God, to reach the point of death only to find that you have never lived at all. — Thoreau, WALDEN Down how many roads among the stars must man propel himself in search of the final secret? The journey is difficult, im- mense, at times impossible, yet that will not deter some of use from attempting it . . We have joined the caravan, you might say, at a certain point; we will travel as far as we can, but we cannot in one lifetime see all that we would like to see or to learn all that we hunger to know. -Loren Eiseley THE IMMENSE JOURNEY He who isn't busy being born is busy dying.-Bob Dylan It doesn't matter who you have hurt, if you've learned not to hurt again. It doesn't matter what mis- takes you've made as long as you don't make them again. As long as you learn, as long as you're willing to take your life in your hands, and kiss it and go on from there. Then there is growth. Then there is life! - Leo Buscaglia Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. They come through but not from you. And though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts. For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. - Kahil Gibran THE PROPHET. Special thanks to our staff, Mrs. Neumann, Mr. Rambow, Juneau Pharmacy, INDEPENDENT-NEWS, and our advertisers. As we dedicate this book to our parents, in tribute to Prince's Purple Rain and what has been the Seniors’ own Purple Reign , we dedicate this page to the fate of originality, in tribute to a very original musician, Elton John, especially recognizing his song Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. The lyrics come to mind when our gradu- ation comes to mind. Elton John s era of music has ended, but the memories live on. Our era as students of Dodgeland High School has ended, but the memories shall continue to live on. We sing Goodbye Yellow Brick Road to Dodgeland, and shout HELLO!! to the paths of our future, whenever they may lead us. We hope every- one's path of life is full of success, happiness, love and hope. We wish ail of you — fellow graduates, underclassmen, faculty, all of Dodgeland — may all your lives continue to be filled with happiness, may you reach all your dreams, and may the memories live on.
