Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1978 volume:

DEDICATION ANNOUNCEMENTS There will be no late buses on Thursday ... You must have an advanced make-up slip ... Honor students should report to the office for a picture at 8:30 ... Would the following people report to the office ... How many times has the average DHS person heard these phrases? Yet, without these messages there would be little order in the school. Mrs. Joyce Duffy has had this duty along with her other duties of being a high school secretary. Her jobs have not all been easy. Who wants to call a parent on the telephone and say, Your child has been hurt , or to tell a student I'm sorry but I cannot accept this excuse, ? Not many people do; nevertheless, these messages must be relayed. And Mrs. Duffy dealt with them in the right manner. Mrs. Duffy also has other duties which include taking care of the sick students, handing out admit slips, keeping students' files up-to-date (this includes the individual's daily atten- dance), taking responsibility for accepting excuses (for tardin- esses and absent slips), relaying certain DHS news to the media, and operating the intercom. In spite of all that work, Mrs. Duffy took the time to listen to students and be a friend. It is not time for Dodgeland to show recognition for the loyal work that Mrs. Duffy has done. As co-editors of the REFLECTIONS, we dedicate our book to Mrs. Joyce Duffy — a person who has a part in every school activity, and who has touched our lives with MEMORIES of our 1978 school year. We, the REFLECTIONS staff, would also like to show our appre- ciation to Mr. Robert Wieneke, our co-advisor, for his fourteen years of dedication to our club. Mr. Wieneke has captured many MEMORIES to Dodgeland students throughout these fourteen years by his words of encouragement and by his contributions of laying out yearbook pages, proofreading the copies, and then shipping out the pages for Its final production. Mr. Wieneke, we wish you the best of happiness. You have given us a great start, and now we want you to have a great start in your new career. Thanks again, for your sincere dedication. REFLECTIONS MEMORES We are the Class of '78, We were known as super and great. When we leave, either near or far. We will remember who we are. We will remember what we had done. We will remember all the work and all the fun, All the teachers, and all the books. All our friends everyday looks. And all the good, bad, and great, for we are the CLASS OF '78. By DAVID T. ORGANIZATION WITH AUDIO-VISUAL INSIGHT A group of dedicated souls gave up many evenings (and even some week- ends) to film such events as football, boys and girls basketball, forensics, and a bridge-building contest. Working on audio visual equipment not only in- volved filming the event, but also showing these events to various audiences. This aided many to improve on their style. The club was led by Mr. Schuster. He was devoted to the proposition that students should enjoy learning. The members would like to express their grati- tude to him for helping them on problems and projects too numerous to men- tion. H.F: Hey, wow man! E.E: What the----is the A-V Club? T. B: What did you say? H.S: I can't remember. J. A: Having problems threading tape, I think? S.B: I'll take the Fifth Amendment on that one. C.S: Cooperation on behalf of the stu- dents trained to run the equip- ment. B.N: Quitting because I knew I had enough credits. K. R: Always forgetting I was a club member. B.K: John N. not showing and my hav- ing to take over for him. 80 TACKLING TEAMS The 1977 Trojans were a very gifted organization. Sprinting a 100 in 11.4 and a 220 in 25.8, along with breaking four records 21 times can only be done by an all- around-good athlete. Cindy took first at state in the 220 and third in the 100 yd dashes. The entire team was loaded with talent and marked the season with a third in conference. 91 FRONT ROW: Patti Gahlman; Mgr, Kim Nehls, Barb Breitenstein. Two of these three teams went to state: Oakfield, Class C Runners-Up and Lo- mirea. Class B Champs. There were no wins or losses in cheer- leading but it did call for skill. The cheer- leaders devoted much of their time for practicing routines, making pep signs, and for supporting Dodgeland teams. Going out in front of a big crowd took courage and these girls deserve the recognition along $10,000 Pyramid with their advisor, Miss Lemke, who gave much to bring school spirit back to life. 103 0, Singing together for the last time. BUT WHAT YOU ARE CLASS S ALUT ATORIAN: Ann Nehls 105 Rita del Carmen Sandoval I am really happy today to be with all of you. I want to say thanks for every- thing. To all at Dodgeland High, to the Dodgeland AFS Club, to all the other people and organizations who made it possible for me to be here. And very espe- cially, to the Miescher family who I'll never forget. I have experienced in America so many unique moments to remember — like my first rollerskating at- tempt, falling down and then not being ablt to sit the next day, my shoveling snow in winter, freezing my nose and toes, the Homecoming, and my first speech about my country-improving my poor English. Now I have very little time left to stay in this country, but I'll never forget all my friends and the nice people I have known who made me feel at home. America is a wonderful country which I am proud to know and I really hope to come back someday to see you all again. Muchas gracias y hasta la vista.11 Ann Nehls ... A quotation from Ella Wheeler Wilcox states, 'Laugh, and the world laughs with you; weep, and you weep alone.' Well, our class certainly did not weep alone. The faculty would probably agree that we were overstocked with come- dians. Take our female track star, who as a freshman, decided to test the avi- ation power of her eraser, instead it made a crash landing on Mrs. Brieman's head. Or Saudi and his master chef whose greatest achievement was sauteeing mushrooms over a bunsen burner. Mark Twain once said, Humor is the good-na- tured of truth'. Realistically, we know our lives contain times of excrutiating pain, but also times of tremendous joy. True, there is nothing glorious or pro- found about a sense of humor, but it is a necessary ingredient to survive in a sometimes miserable world. Looking back over the last four years of bountiful laughter, I can truthfully say the ability to laugh is an attribute we, the class of '78, already possess with great abundance ... Sandie Hoffmar ... One of the most important things in the world for you is to work out your own individual life, for as our motto says, 'It matters not what you are thought to be, but what you are'. You must build your life from the place where you stand and with the materials in your hands. Nobody else ever stood in your particular place or ever will stand in one identical; nobody ever has or can possess the same materials. You alone can fuse the elements. Hold your place, do not try to shift into the place that another occupies. Keep you eye on what you have to work with, not on what someone else has. The ultimate result, the originality, flavor, distinction, usefulness of your life depends on the care, the reverence, and the intelligence with which you work 'out and up' from where you are, and with what you have. Remember — 'It matters not what you are thought to be, but what you are' ... 106 We, the co-editors would like to thank those who gave us the opportunities to have memories in the yearbook. By the end of the year, many staff members were eager and spent much time working. Even students and teachers who were not on the staff asked if we needed help (Greg Krueger and Roger Allen wrote up some fine articles). Thanks so much! Support is wonderful and every activity needs it. It was the first time for the Reflections to do several things a little different this year. A little color was added and candids were run below the advertisements so that Reflections could bring more memories to you. We also appreciate greatly the seniors who gave us many ideas on candid forms------It was quite an exper- ience to be on top of the world (school?). The co-editors give special thanks to the following people: To our advisors, Mrs. Neumann and Mr. Wieneke along with Mr. Hare, our Josten's Yearbook representa- tive, for helping us in times of trouble, confusion, and deadlines. To Mr. Rambow who took time out of his busy schedule to photograph beautiful memories. To Dan Caine who willfully helped out our regular photographers and snapped unique shots. To David T. Chapman who wrote the meaningful peom. Our staff hopes that you will enjoy your MEMORIES whenever you open this book of REFLECTIONS . MEMORIES of 1978 THANK YOU ADVERTISERS The Reflections' Staff wishes to thank all of our advertisers for their assistance in the production of our 1977-78 yearbook. This year, advertising support came from within and outside our school district to prove the yearbook that will bring back many memories of Dodgeland High School — 1978. We hope that you will patronize any of these businesses whenever you may have an opportunity to do so.
