Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1977 volume:

DEDICATION Todays student is the leader of tommorrow. He is molded and influenced by teachers, classmates, and coaches, that he comes into contact with during his years in high school. One coach who has had a direct effect on many of the graduates of DHS over the past twelve years is Mr. Robert Wieneke-Head Football Coach. We, the Co-Editors of the 1977 REFLECTIONS, would like to dedicate our book to Mr. Robert Wieneke, a coach who has given so much to the students of Dodgeland High School. In his public announcement of his resignation, he expressed his feelings in the following article: WHO BUT A COACH Who but a coach would want to be a coach? Who but a coach has the opportunity to Influence young people by example that it is not “aquare” to go to church, or to discipline themselves against tobacco, alcoholic bev- erages. drugs, and those four-letter words used by people with a limited vocabulary? Who but a coach has the opportunity to see a gangling youngster, who can hardly walk without tripping over his own feet, mature by hard work and the sweat of hi brow into a graceful athlete? Who but a coach could let the agony of defeat affect him to the point he spends a sleepless night tossing and turning in bed9 He repeatedly contemplates his decisions: Should he have used a different defense; why didn’t he take out the boy with four fouls before be fouled out of the game; why did he not call a timeout; why . why.. why? Who but a coach would like for Santa Claus to fill bis Christmas stocking with a six-eight transfer student after having lost six games In succession before Christmas? Who but a coach has a greater feeling of loneliness, ignorance of his profession, and insecurity because he has suffered through a long losing season? Who but a coach must fight greed and selfishness as be literally forces himself not to allow his star player to dress for the big game because he violated training rales and must be disciplined9 During the game, over and over in the coach’s mind, the thought, Will this action make this player a better citizen or am I depriving his team mates the opportunity to win?” Who but a coach has the honor of teaching today’s youth to be humble and thankful, instead of being boastful, after the thrill of victory? Who has also the more difficult task of teaching losers not to make excuses but to stand firm in defeat, even when within their hearts they would like to cry? Who but a coach could have a lamp in his throat when a young man who, only mmute after graduating from high school, strides over and extends a firm right hand and says with tears running down his cheeks. “Orach, it was great playing for you ”? Who but a coach could feel the impact oI the world tensions when he learns that ooe of his former player has been killed in the Vietnamese conflict? Thirty-five days after this tragedy he received a bullet-ridden letter that was written by this lad two days before his death. On the outside of the letter was attached the note. Damaged by iffy action in the Republic of Vietnam.” On the inside he bed written, “Dear Coach, Remember me plesae h ns I favor.. .tell the other boys to study ” Who but a coach... Thank God, I am a coach! TABLE OF CONTENTS Athletics ... 83 Student life ... 37 Involvement ... 47 2 sivnaiAiaMi HONOR STUDENTS FIRST ROW: Chris Gundrum, Bernie Gahlman. SCHOLARSHIP, LEADERSHIP, The National Honor Society is a group consisting of Juniors and Seniors who have shown qualities of leadership, scholarship, character and service throughout their high school years. Students are inducted into the Society during a tapping ceremony after the first quarter of school. This year the Senior members chose a seance as the theme for their tapping ceremony. Eleven new members were inducted into the Society. Because the National Honor Society serves the school and community, they are allowed to meet during one class period every month. During their meetings they plan projects and activities to better serve others. This year the society was active in hold- ing a food basket raffle, selling food at the Sub-District Forensics contest, visiting patients at Clearview, plant- ing a tree for Arbor day, and clean- ing the book closet at school. Besides all of their helpful services the Na- tional Honor Society annually awards a $100 scholarship to a deserving graduating senior. I have to say everything is on a large scale. Wisconsin, however, further you go, all you can see is hilly countryside, herds of cows, tractors, and endless horizon. It also gave me a NICE present-- snow and freeze. I couldn't believe inside my nose got frozen--20°F. I felt I'd rather be in a refrigera- tor. But to my surprise, now I am sorry I didn't see any blizzard. From this point, maybe I might have brought that unusual weather by my unwary wish. Give me much colder air, I'd like to try to endure it! At night I would look up the sky and be amazed at transparent and super clear sky and twinkling stars on it. And now some of you maybe don't like it, but I like dandelions all over around the house and along the sidewalks. Not only do they comfort my eyes, but they also inspire me. However hard you step on it, it lifts up its head again--however often you cut them, they never die. Weed as they are, they never give up patience. I like them ! Also I loved street trees, which now budding as if enjoying the coming of spring after long winter, and above all the squirrels! Especially in winter it was fun to watch squirrels running on the snow on rare warm days. And I hope you will keep all these nature until I come back here some day and meet you and them. I want to be a hero. A hero who thinks it was good that he had failed, in short, who comes back grabbing something from the failures. As I am a Japanese and having lived there 17 years, I couldn't help seeing things through my prejudice. Though I tried to get rid of it. For the best example--pizza. I couldn't believe you eat them as a main meal and also my first pizza was too spicy to eat. But now I can live on pizza for a week or so. So, I don't think I know American cul- ture, I felt a fragment of it. Everybody asked me what's the difference between Japanese and Americans? or Are Japanese girls cuter than ours? And I was afraid to answer such like Americans are such and such. Japanese are such and such. Because I came to learn everyone is different. Everyone has his charming points. In the sense of charming points, there are no walls between races. Crabs walk sideways, dogs walk forward. And crabs can do their jobs only when they walk sideways. What if crabs began to walk forward? There would be no more crabs. God gives everybody something. Even if you think you have no ability, thinking like that is your ability. But you can't find your ability while you are interested in other's affairs. And it's probably the hardest thing in life to avoid envying others. I'm a restless man. I can't stay at one place if I find it doesn't interest me, or not important to me, and if I find better possibility any other place. In an other word, I must be selfish man, to live just for myself. But I do believe I will overcome someday, and that's the time I begin to attract people and give something to people. I believe in individualism. If you are good to you, eventually others are good to you and you are good to others too. Everybody has time to decide things himself. Nobody can help him. But worst of all I think I have to desert my shyness in spite that sometimes I love my shyness. Since I like sports, especially I like wiping off sweat from the forehead after sports. Football, wrestling, both of these were new to me. Too bad is when I began to know how these were, it was the ending time. I wish I could stay here one more year and carry and kick a football and pin as many guys as I could. Though I'm running in the park, not on the track, I wanted to play baseball. More school spirit! ! ! Thanks alot to everybody giving me a nice experience. I had bad times as well as super good times. One problem was language. It is hard to express in different language. Maybe I couldn't make myself understood enough yet. But if you want to know about me or also Japan, write to me sometime. Address: Yoshihisa Tamura, 81-3 Hogo Bando, Naruto, Tokushima, Japan 77902. I enjoyed your food, too, though it gave me almost 18 extra lbs. Especially pizza. Well, there are too many things to write, but I can't be- cause of the size of paper. “LIFE’S SECRET’S LIE IN BOOKS” FRONT ROW: Debbie Anderson, Sharon Haase, Nancy Engebretson. Theme: IF YOU LEAVE ME NOW Band: HARVEST 78 .. . Tonight officially marks the end of our high school years at Dodge - land. Four years that are filled with memories that will never be forgotten and friendships that will be cherished forever. Now that we are graduating, we will each have to go our separate ways to work toward fulfilling our own goals. Some of us will accomplish this by attending college, vocational, or technical schools. Others will enter the working world or join the armed forces. I feel that tonight would have never been possible if it were not for the encouragement and guidance that has been given us by our parents, teachers, and friends. Our parents cared for us and brought us up to be the individuals that we are. Our teachers devoted many hours of their time in preparing us for our future lives. And our friends were always there when we needed help, comfort, or moral support. Throught the years these peo- ple have also given us much needed advice. As I look back over the years, I find one piece of advice that seems to outweigh all others It is to always try to do the best you can. Knowing that you have done your best is a re- ward in itself. For, as our motto states, The reward of a thing well done is to have done it. CLASS FLOWER White Rose CLASS COLORS Blue and Silver CLASS MOTTO The reward of a thing well done is to have done it. Don't gear yourself to other people's goals-set your own sights and achieve what you, YOURSELF, deem worthwhile. I am not saying to aim for less than you can accomplish. No, set them high, so that even if you fail to fully meet your goals, something will have been achieved. In this way, you will be a credit to YOURSELF first, and your parents, community, and school second. In this order only, can a true sense of satisfaction in life be attained. Now, before closing, I would like to take this chance to say that I leave Dodgeland High with a great deal of sadness. I enjoyed my high school years here immensely And for this, I now, publicly and sincerely, thank the entire faculty of Dodgeland High School for not only putting up with the antics of my class and me for these last four years, but for manag- ing to instill a little knowledge in us along the way. We are eternally grateful Goodbye DHS from all of us. YOOCHUN Everybody asked me, 'How do you like America? And still after I go home, people will ask, How did you like America?' But what can I say? I don't know America yet. Just like there are millions of places I've never been in Japan and I don't know even about Japan. Even now I'm learning how American grad, like. But I can say only this. I came here 10 monthes ago and I'm leaving here one month later. There are 2,731 AFS students from 60 countries this year. And I happened to stay here and happened to meet you and talk to you and make friends . . everything is coinci- dence. And I am thankful for this coincidence, be- cause I can say I like this country and this school and you. By the way, I have to graduate once more after I go back to Japan next March according to my high school's rule in Japan, which some of you may know I feel now, after living 18 years and having various ex- periences, I have to graduate hundreds of times more in my life. What I mean is the older you get, the more difficult you will face whatever you do and you have to get over them. From my own experience, I like climbing mountains. Mountains taught me a lot of things. First, a mountain begins as a gradual slope but the higher you go up-hill, the more slopes you have to get over And even you conquer the mountain, you have to go downhill, at this point people are liable to be off their guards and take pride in what they did-this is another graduation behind one graduation. And here there is Japanese old saying, 'Only good-bye is life' that means good-bye comes anywhere some day. I don't want to say good-bye, but we won't say this is goodbye, but just the beginning. AFS gave me just op- portunity to get to know you. I'll see you some day and share our cultures. Still I got one month more and I want to use full of my time. Thank you good people. Dan Schlichting ended his cross country career with a very successful season. Dan became one of the few athletes ever to earn four varsity letters in one sport A team leader throughout his career, Dan was elected co-captain as a senior. Me moved up to sixth place on the all time Dodgeland cross country list with 17:12 three mile time. As a senior, Dan finished first for Dodgeland at the conference meet. 88 Dan Schlichting Because of the warm weather in spring, the Golf Team had an early start. This year, we had a record high in participation, seventeen people, which is probably due to the fact that girls were allowed to join the team. Even after getting hit by balls and letting the clubs fly through the air, we did pretty good. Thank you Mr. Keuler for your guidance and help. Denise made a great comeback from an early injury in track to be one of the two representatives along with Cindy Radke at sectionals from Dodgeland. She then advanced to state, where she took thirds in both of her events—shot put and discus. 103 THE MEANING OF FRIENDSHIP Li What does it mean to be a friend? A helping hand to the journey's end; A loyal heart and a loving one, too, No task too great for a friend to do! What does it mean to be a friend ? A burden carried around the bend; A hill to climb for another's sake. There's nothing a friend won't undertake ! What does it mean to be a friend? A tongue that is quickest to defend. A friend comes through when the test demands; A friend is a person who understands. What does it mean to be a friend? A life to keep, and a purse to lend - - The sort of friend 1 want to be - - The kind of friend you are to me. Ann Campbell Life at Dodgeland is over now for the Seniors. Many things about the school, classes, activities and clubs will always stay in their minds, but that which will have made the most impression on them is their friends. It may be the end of a way of life for thirteen years, but it won't be the end of friendships. Some will last a lifetime and others will fade but always return in memories of high school.
