Russell Clowdis, Knute Nevins, Paul Owings, Bob Toalson, and Leon Vann also lettered this year as the Demons completed one of their most am- bitious schedules in the school's history. Teams were played from all sections of the state. Topeka, Leavenworth, Pittsburg, Wichita East, and Hutch- inson were among the larger schools on this year's sched- ule that included eleven AA games. Twelve teams entered the Sixth Annual Dodge City Invitational Tourney and around 10,000 fans saw the four days of intersectional competition. For catcher, Charles Krueger appeared to be the best of the lot with sophomore Don Winfrey showing great promise of developing into an A-l backstop. First base was another spot where one person seemed to have the position sewed up, in this case the outstand- ing player is tall, lanky Leon Vann. His closest rival is Bob Bailey, another sophomore. For a keystone com- l bination we had Bob Toalson at shortstop, and Leon Gerig holding the second base spot. The hot corner, third base, turned out to be somewhat of a struggle between Eddie Birzer and Jerry Chance.
