The teacher, Dutch Coward. attempts to show his students how to drive intelligently. Ot' course. you can't learn to drive without a little experience. so non-drivers have a chance behind the wheel. With the aid of dual controls. no one is really taking: his life in his hands. The written tests which are given are prepared by the AAA and. as Dutch will tell you, they are easy enough for sixth gr'rafle1's to pass without any study. There are also special tests on reaction time and ,judging distance. l'pon conn.li-tion ol' the course the lfoys will find a L'Ul'iii.lCilit'. signed lay lJutch. which lowers their insurance rates IH per 41 T' P Cl'lll. This year the members gave the announcements throughout the day over the public address system. On Mondays from until 6:00 P. M., WKPT features D.-B. students on Teenage Terrace. Along with the regulars on the show, other members appear on the air. These student disc jockeys play the latest records with dedications. Since the club doesn't have a regulai day for meetings, they get together when the need arises. Their able sponsor is Nil Earl Jordan. This is the kingdom of oi' friend ind sympathizer Mr. R. F. Curly K i- nedy. The activities office is the nerve center of Dobyns-Bennett. From there ball games exams club activities Southern Assembly programs and many other school activities are planned. Left: Noon hour rush at the book store. This year Dobyns-Ben- nett was fortunate to have the state president. Brenda Killiam. Distributive Education Members of the IJ. Ii. or Distribu- tive Education Club are already getting a head start in the world of business. These ambitious students arrive at school at 8 o'clock in the morning to get in extra time for learning about the three R's : then they spend the after- noon workinq downtown. Due to the wide interest in IJ. li.. it has been divided into two clubs: the A. B. Cole- man D. E. Club and the Dobyns- Bennett D. E. Club. Sponsored by Mrs. lVhitney. they learn to better use these facilities and help others to use them. By working in the library, they gain valuable experience in meeting and dealing with people. If a girl is planning a career as a librarian, she will learn there are many problems in- volved in managing so many books, keeping records, and collecting fines. We students should thank these club members for making our use of the library easier and more profitable. JCL members. Betsy Griffith. These are some of the cries of members of the Junior Classical League, which is spon- sored by Miss Elmore. Encouragement of appreciation and interest in the cul- ture of ancient Greece and Rome is the objective of this club. All second and third year Latin take an active part in carrying out the projects. The meetings of the J. C. L. are conducted in the Roman manner, with consuls and a dictator when necessary. LL The Library Club officers. Before the game against Johnson City. Coach Guy B. Crawford announced his resignation, effective at the close of the 1960 academic year. The Indians played inspired ball to take a 65- 48 victory and the championship for Coach Crawford. At Bristol, Ainslie and Reagan broke Big Seven records in leading the Indians to an 80-40 massacre. Ainslie tossed in forty-nine points and Reagan had twenty assists. Magic got Roanoke nowhere. All they could pull out of the magic hat was a 76-46 defeat. The Tribe added victories over Blountville. 55-425 and Ketron, 75-52, before taking the wind out of the Cyclones with a 51-44 win. Greenville was massacred 77-25 and Erwin toppled 70-42. Johnson City nabbed a 55-51 vic- tory from the Indians to snap the Tribe's skein of consecutive Big Seven victories numbering forty-three. 1959-1960 I F ...I ...Q v 0, -.Q ' '77 W 4 ' 'mia fp XJ i m .jqiifglyufigifjigl T57 B an I Y --4 ' 'Q , 4 - , f ' .' i M mr l ' .iiKQ H xx GSP4 LJ' 'f....5' , ll,.,,...,f .sgefcw I li-S-4, -af 1.11 5- --5 First row: E. In their next outing, the Redmen dropped a close one to crosstoxvn rival, Lynn View, -1-2. The Indians then hit a winning streak, dropping Unaka 10-8, Church Hill 10-0, and Greenville 7-2. Then they were staggered by three successive losses. Marion squeak- ed by them 5-4, after which they fell prev to Gate City 11-2. and to Elizabethton 6-0. The Indians managed to ease by Morris- town 1-0 and slammed Boones Creek 1-1-5. The Tribes' next victim was Erwin, as they took both games of a double-header, 6-2 and D--J. After a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bristol, the Redmen gained revenge for an earlier loss to Elizabethton, by outscoring the Cyclones 12-8. The last two season games were heart- breakers as the Morristown crew shut-out the Indians 5-0 and Johnson City whipped them, 10-1. The Tribe downed Church Hill 12-0 in the first game of the District Four Tourna- ment. In the second game they were shut- out by Ketron and a defeat by Bluff City, 7-5, eliminated the Indians. Chemical fibers form the textiles that clothe him. The power that propels him on land, on sea, in the air-and ultimately through space-comes from fuels pro- duced by chemical processing operations. The colors that brighten his world. . . the synthetic rubbers that tread his vehicles ...the drugs that extend his life expect- ancy '... the versatile plastics that do so many jobs so wcll...these, too, are all products contributed by the pioneering chemical industry. In the years to come, Eastman research and Eastman production ability will con- tinue to help make our Earth even more of a chemical world.
