I I ,, .Wx-fc fv- H2 f is, 2 , if President Vice-President Treasurer Secretary BOBBY THOMAS HUNTER WRIGHT BETTY POTEAT DOTTY TETER CLASS OF '53 HISTORY When we entered Dobyns-Bennett in 1949, the building was as new to the rest of the stu- dents as it was to us. That season was the last year we were state football champs. We tried to enter into school life, as much as possible, by being in Glee Club, marching band, and hav- ing a Freshman play, so by the end of the year the upper classmen considered us as bearable, though not wanted or needed. SOPHOMORE YEAR The fall of 1950 saw our football team fall in defeat, the first time in three years. We were consoled, though, by thoughts of a good basketball team. The District and Regional Tour- naments were held in our new Sprankle Gymnasium, and Kingsport almost became state basket- ball champs. Later a Chorus Festival in the spring had students aspiring to become opera stars. JUNIOR YEAR Mercy!! Please buy some popcorn!! was on our tongues as the Prom and Splash Party were on our minds. At all the football and basketball games we were seen wearily trudging through the crowds desperately trying to sell popcorn. After the midterm exams we were evaluated by the Southern Association of Secondary Schools. We Juniors, thinking we were smart, decided to wear uniforms of some nature to make the committee think we were in an institution. We were quite awed by the Junior Play, The Barretts, but a week later came the big event, the Junior-Senior Prom. No one could ever forget what a glorious time we had. Then came the realization We were Seniors. SENIOR YEAR This year we tried to walk around the halls with a dignified air, so we could impress the Freshmen. Of course, we never did quite succeed, but it was fun trying. Our football team improved greatly, and our basketball team was the best we were privi- liged to see. At the last football game of the season there weren't many dry eyes when the Senior members stepped out from the band. We ordered our cards and invitations with growing anticipation. By the time our Senior Banquet, Prom, and Splash Party were given, we were so excited our parents and teachers could- n't get near us. May 31 - our Baccalaureate Sermon and June 2 - our Graduation Those two days we shall never forget. Even though we are now Alumni of Dobyns-Bennett, we will always re- member the lessons we learned - not so much the material iD books, but the DfiHCiP1eS Of honesty, dependability, good character, and leadership. In four years we learned to look at events as an adult would look at them, not a chllfll. There WGFS many sad moments? there Were many happy moments. A11 these things Come into our minds when we review our high school days. The love, the guidance, and the friendship combine to make it one of the happiest times in our ife. We were lost in spite of thc good intentions of everybody to guide us around. We watched the Seniors hold their convention, and then we had one of our own, elect- ing Locke Carter as President. Our subjects had us worried, because we didn't especially like the idea of dissecting frogs, fish, or worms. We finished our Freshman year with nothing too unusual happening. We studied and work- ed, but all in all, we had a pretty good time. SOPHOMORE YEAR We came back to Dobyns-Bennett after a busy summer. In fact, some of our teachers got the idea that we didn't want to come back to school at all. We elected our class ofiicers a few weeks after we returned. They were an ambitious bunch, and we started selling popcorn a year early. After exams we had a 'Lsock hop in which everybody appeared in true D.-B. style - barefooted Cwith socksb. Town Hall Tonight was our class play, which was presented at the time our school was evaluated . But why don't you want to buy a 10 year subscription to the Poultry Journal? This was the trend of our conversation about the end of school, because we had a magazine drive. We made money on our business venture which we quickly added to the treasury for our Prom. JUNIOR YEAR Goodness! Aren't we the stuff! How grand it was to be an upperclassman, We just knew the Freshmen were envious of us. We were old hands at selling popcorn at the football games - although we missed a lot of good plays. Our class officers were determined to have our class a good one, so we had meetings each FRESHMAN YEAR month. I We sold popcorn at the basketball games and through all the tournaments until we were beginning to feel like millionaires. Finally the Prom came - the event we had been waiting and working for. We had a wonderful time there and also at our Splash Party. June 2! We are finally Seniors, Pu-lese buy some popcorn! I ! NM' .1 A. N In I 4 4 a x . Q , S A . 5 zl, eww Y X . x + X Q ,,,,. - Q -if. Mr. Kinnick and the Student Council had an Orientation program for us. It helped us find our way around school a little better. After learning to and our way around the building, we elected our officers with Billy Green as President. We learned a little bit about studying, but we were too thrilled with our football and basketball games to think much about anything else. After Christmas we gave our Freshman Play, Angel Child. This proved to many of us that we were destined to be great movie stars. We graduated from our Freshman Year accompanied by many misgivings of teachers and parents. SOPHOMORE YEAR We thought that our Sophomore year everyone would be more than glad to obey us be- cause--after all we were all-11-most upperclassmen. To our great sorrow, people just laughed. We elected Winter Wright as President, Jack Kilgore as Vice President, and Linda Hay- worth zis Secretary, and Charlotte Lee as Treasurer. Christmas came and went with nothing too unusual happening, but before long we were in the spirit of the Sophomore play, Antic Spring. From this we entered into spring with a for- ward look toward our vacation. You can see how Sophomores differ from Freshmen Don Adams Sarah Adams L. C. We found the Juniors to be conceited, but the Sophomores and Seniors were friendly. The Hrst thing we did was to eleet class officers with David Lionberger as President, Bill Ford as Vice President, Katherine Sproles as Secretary, and Vir- ginia Denton as Treasurer. All our subjects were hard, especially 1B Algebra. Christmas came in time for a much needed rest - but then exams! UGH! We went to the Student Council Dance and were getting ready to go to the Prom. Then We found out the horrible truth - we weren't invited. Our Freshman Year went very fast. We met many new friends, we learned a lot, and we had a good time. The Cherokee nation occupied the Valley of the Holston and at first was friendly to the White man. The first party came in 1748 under the leadership of Dr. Thomas Walker, intrepid pioneer ex- plorer. Two years later he started a permanent settle- ment near the site of historic Rotherwood, once the home of John B. Dennis, founder of the Kingsport Utilities. Translated into the Cherokee language, Peace Island becomes Ginayli Utwatlauhf' and sometimes they called it Ecwa Utwatlauh' or Long Island. Here they made encampments, lit their council fires and made treaties. From Ginay1i Utwatlauh radiated the war and trading trails of the Indians. Even today Peace Island or Kingsport is continuing to blaze new trails and has developed more rapidly than any comparable city in the state. The employees of the Kingsport Utilities, many of whom have helped in the building of this community, ex- tend to the graduates of Dobyns-Bennett High School their sincere congratulations.
