It is a select organization, and one can obtain membership only through a tryout before a committee composed of old members of the Mixed Chorus. The two events of the season which capture the spotlight are the Christmas and Spring Concerts. The Christmas Concert was beautiful and impressing, the outstanding feature of which ,yly y,!l, f 4 M was the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel s Messiah . MILITARY INTELLIGENCE Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service -the motto of the National Honor Society has been the standard of the Kingsport Chapter since it was formed in 1929. Election into the society is the highest honor a student can receive during his school career. Representing the fundamental objectives for which schools are instituted, the organization gives recognition to those who have most nearly attained the desired ends. The club is again capably sponsored by Miss Margaret Butler. Regular meetings are held twice monthly to transact business or to have a program by a committee from the club magazine, Student Life . During the '44-'45 year most of the activities carried on were related to the war. Names and addresses of servicemen were collected for the honor roll, and letters were written to each of them. Christmas greetings, letters, and . copies of the Indian Tribune , were mailed to former members who are now in the armed forces. On April 16, a special assem- bly program was given, climax- ing a waste-paper salvage drive. The quota was ten pounds of paper per person. In the latter part of February a group of the members went to Junior High School to take part in the initia- tion program. TELL IT TO THE MARINES During the 1944-45 term, Thespian Dramatic Troupe No. 432 of D.B.H.S. has been solely engaged in the Victory Corps Program. Various plays have been presentedg and through the efforts of the members, large contributions have been made to the Servicemen's Library Fund. Favorable comments have been received from the office of the National Thespians relative to the part played by Troupe 432 in our war program. The club, sponsored by Miss Louise Taylor, is composed of students who have earned the necessary acting points for entry. Their motto is: Act Well your partg there all honor lies g and by that motto, the members are holding high the name of the club in the absence of their former sponsor, Miss Nancy Wylie. A new Junior Dramatic Club has been added this year for the under-classmen only. The purpose for doing so is for the students to earn enough credits to become a member of the National Thespians, a Senior Dramatic Club. Q1 f KINGSPORT 46 - MORRISTOWN 0 In the initial tussle of the season, Kingsport's untried gridmen displayed their football ability by easily trouncing the Morristown eleven. The constant attack on the Morristown goal line began immediately after the kickoff and continued with undiminished vigor throughout the game. Lewis I-Iall, a veteran backfield ace of the previous season, was the standout. He scored to ring up two of the local tallies. Jake Sells also turned in a good performance. KINGSPORT 37 - STAIR TECH 7 Kingsport continued on the victory road by humbling Stair Tech of Knoxville. The first quarter yielded our Indians one touchdown, with Dickson toting the ball. Things started popping in the second period as Bill Caton received the kickoff and galloped 70 yards for a touchdown. The most important point of this contest was that it brought to view the passing attack of Kingsport. The Puckett to Cloud combination scored twiceg five passes were attempted by the Indians and five were completed. Stair Tech's lone touchdown came in the final period. Frye and Shipley were outstanding in the line. KINGSPORT 7 - CHATTANOOGA 7 Two powerful, evenly matched teams met in combat on the Chattanooga gridiron, and neither was vanquished. 'Nooga's Purple Poundersu, last year's champions of Tennessee, had things pretty much their own way during the first half. From Kingsport's 38-yard line the Pounders pounded a route through the line for a touchdown in the second period. The Indians staged a valiant comeback in the second half, pressing Viciously against the Chattanooga forward wall. But the touchdown came in the form of a long toss from ace passer Cecil Puckett to Buford Kilgore, who raced over the line untouched. Jack Fulkerson kicked the extra point to tie the score. KINGSPORT 13 - BRADLEY 0 Once more Kingsport's aerial blitz proved to be too much for the opponent. This time the receiver was Caton, with Puckett hurling the pigskin. The first score came late in the first period with Caton going over from the six after catching the pass. After a scoreless second period, Kingsport fought its Way deep into Bradley territory where Puckett tossed another to Caton in the end zone. Bradley had an excellent ground attack which gained readily through the Kingsport line, but to no avail. KINGSPORT 20 - IQRXVIN 0 Kingsport toppled the Ifrwin fortress to the tune of 20-0 and bagged its first conference victory. The Indian attack was stopped cold in the first period, so Kingsport took to the air in the second, when the Puckett-Caton combination scored once more. KINGSPORT 26 - KIARYVILLIZ 0 The Braves of Kingsport settled down to work immediately after the opening whistle in a business-like attitude and consequently gave the Maryville eleven a sound drubbing. The greatest thrill of the game occurred when Kilgore exhibited his track ability by dashing 83 yards for a touchdown. Dickson, Cloud, and Caton registered the other scores. KINGSPORT 12 - KNOXVILLE 28 Kingsport invaded Knoxville and suffered the Hrst defeat of the season. After a Hrst period devoted to punting tactics, the Trojans came to life in the second quarter and pushed across the goal line, in the person of Bob Lund. The Indians bounded back shortly afterwards, when Puckett passed to Kilgore for a touch- down. After the halftime respite the Indians again took to the warparh and romped across the goal line on a lateral play. This put Kingsport ahead, I2-6. In the final period a bombshell named Bob Lund exploded with disastrous results, snatching from the Tribe the victory which it had practically won. Although the Indians played their hearts out, they could not stem the tide. Lund went over for three touchdowns, and the Trojans also picked up a safety, making the final score 12-28. KINGSPORT 0 - BRISTOL 12 It was a bad luck night for Kingsport as local hopes for conference champion- ship were shattered in a 12-0 upset. The Indian attack never materialized, but the Tennessee High offense clicked like clockwork. There was that intangible something absent from the Tribal eleven that enabled Bristol to throttle both our ground and air attacks. Bristol scored in the Hrst Eve minutes, and again in the final period. KINGSPORT 7 - ELIZABETI-ITON 13 The favored Iilizabethton squad proved to be a Nemesis and capped the con- ference crown for the fourth consecutive year by pushing down the field with continual line gains. In the second period the Tribesmen replied in kind by slamming and bucking their way to a position in front of the opponent's goal posts, when Puckett fired a bullet pass to Caton for the score. Elizabethton went ahead again in the third quarter. The Tribe was never beaten, and it fought and threatened to score until the Hnal whistle. KINGSPORT 20 - JOHNSON CITY 6 The rejuvenated Indians wound up the 1944 season in fine style by defeating their old arch-rival, Johnson City. johnson City started the fireworks in the first quarter, when Hicks went over for six points. The Tribe went ahead in the second period with Caton tossing to Puckett. In the penultimate quarter, Caton carried the pigskin through for a second marker and later passed to Dickson, who scored the third touchdown.
