' xiii-Q in 1 VI' fl Ha' f Af AAI f 1' 'f Q f , f , V M Q 9 C -N 0 Wi X . ll N if t FOOTBALL 193 5 The Dobyns Bennett High School football boys playing their first year under the tutelage of Coach Rich hung up their cleats the 22nd of November with eleven scalps hung in their belts and only one loss The initial call on August 22 found Coach Rich with numerous candidates but only live varsity lettermen ready for competition Three backs a tackle and two guards had to be found Peters a lanky boy from the 1934 second string row showed signs of being able to handle the kicking and passing assignments As the season wore on these slgns developed mto positive assurance In the first three games the opponents were bowled over with comparative ease only to ind Chattanooga tn the fourth a hard nut to crack After droppmg the l3 0 decision to Chattanooga Central the lndtans seemed to End them School was defeated by Kingsport for the lirst time in the history of their football relations Revenge was sweet when Kingsport set Johnson City back 24 0 and went on to win the Big Six title with ease by scoring a total of l H points in the conference to 7 points for the opponents Seven members of the squad were given all conference births and one made the mythical All Southern team The outstanding players of the squad were hard to single out Captain Bowers for three years an all conference center played and starred in every game and handled his offensive and defensive assign ments to perfection Tom Burgan and Harry Starnes who were his understudles played nice football in several games Bill Sanders an all conference fullback who had been converted from a tackle developed into one of the greatest ofensive fullbacks to grace an East Tennessee gridiron Weighing 203 pounds and being exceptionally fast he was non stopable Fred Stone an all conference veteran quarter back and the light est man on the squad ran the team to perfection Stone was the best defensive man on the squad one of selves, and swept through their remaining eight games with comparative ease.
