The Senior Class of 1949 has been unique in that the ratio of boys to girls is almost three to one. We entered the freshman year very nervously and noisily with an enrollment of 63 students. The girls laughed the year round at Mr. Madison ' s jokes, while the boys learned self-control under Mr. Bolich. Many students left the class before they reached the goal of seniorhood. The girls decided that it was easier to keep up with babies and dishwashing than with textbooks. But the boys were lured by the clink of dollars in Saturday ' s payroll. In our freshman year we won a half-holiday by our ability to slip our foot in the door and talk faster than any one else. In this manner we sold more magazine subscriptions than any of the other classes. The prize was a picnic to Cumberland Knob Park, and will we ever forget how it rained? We had a wonderful time. Our Sophomore year was uneventful except that we participated in many sports and other activities and some of us were initiated into the National Honor Society. The junior year was an exciting one for every member of the class. This year we were under the guidance of Miss Holyfield. Irene Dunbar was elected president of the class and Jobie Draughn became vice president. Iris Hayes, a newcomer to the class from Elkin was chosen secretary and treasurer. We received our class rings before Christmas and we wore them proudly. This was the year we entertained the senior class with a banquet, the theme of which was Moonlight and Roses, at the Dobson Woman ' s Club. Our president, Irene Dunbar, served as toastmistress. In the end, we became seniors, continuing under the direction of Miss Holyfield. This year was destined to be one of the out¬ standing years of the class history. Class officers were Jobie Lee Draughn, president; Iris Hayes, Vice president; Irene Dunbar secretary and treasurer. The sponsoring of the Dobsonian was a major achievement as many of us hesitated to purchase a yearbook on account of our un¬ certainty of being able to claim it for our own! We donated the proceeds of our senior play, The Antics of Andrew to help pay for the activity bus. The class really enjoyed its trip to Chap¬ el Hill, Raleigh, and Durham in our new bus. The high light of the year was the banquet at the Blue Ridge Hotel in Mt. Airy, on the night of April 20, 1949 . —Barbara Blevins Class Historian—
