HOMECOMING '84 Though the Dukes were defeated at the Homecoming game by LaSalle-Peru 26-19, the spirit at Dixon High was not destroyed. Throughout Homecoming week each day was a specific dress-up day planned by the Student Council: Monday - Skip School Day (Colum- bus Day), Tuesday - Lids and Shades Day, Wednesday - Hawaiian Day, Thursday - Punk Day, and Friday - Purple and White and Toga Day. and also the Student Council sold flowers for a friend. There was a pep assembly held Thursday night in which the football players, coaches, cheerleaders, and pom pons took part. After the game Friday night, the fans moved into Lancaster Gym, where the introduction of the homecoming court was held. The Dixon High School band played as the crowd entered the gymnasium and later the band Signalā played for the audience. Reigning Queen Lisa Fordham crowned John Dixon and Sally Monnier King and Queen of Homecoming 1984. The other Senior atten- dants and escorts chosen by the student body were, Debbie Blaine and John Bay and Caroline Hong and Scott Apple. The junior, sopho- more, and freshman attendants and escorts chosen by their own class were: Junior attendants, Stephanie Segura and Brad Dixon, Sophomore attendants. Jody Heacock and Sean Rock. Janet Slain and Andy Ostergrant It s great to be a part of all this!ā Students Travel From Around Maren Schmitz Moormann Maren Schmitz Moormann was one of the exchange students to come to Dixon High School this year. Maren was from Kehl, Germany. Kehl is located on the bor- der between France and Germany near Strasbourg. The dominant language is German with various dialects spoken. Marenās father worked in a hospital in Kehl and specialized in the treatment of epilepsy in children. Her brother Chris- tian. who was 19, was a foreign exchange student, as was her sister Stefani. who was 18 when they were younger, so Maren was carrying on a family tradition. Influ- enced by her brother and sister, she said her reasons for coming to the United States were to experience another coun- try and to improve her English. Maren liked to spend her free time swimming and horseback riding, but her greatest interest was music. She liked playing the flute. This year she was a member of the D.H.S. Pep Band. Maren stated that the school system in Anabel Veramendi Anabel Veramendi was visiting her aunt and uncle. Dr. Sarafin and Judy Ver- amendi. this past year. Anabel lived in Alsasua. NaVaira. Spain which is located in Northern Spain. Anabel lived with her mother and father and her three broth- ers. Her father worked in a factory where they make rubber gloves. Her mother was a housewife. Her brothers were Xavier who was 13. Aitor who was II, and Asier who was 6. Anabel enjoyed watching basketball on T.V. in America and listening to music. The music was much the same in Spain. Germany is different from the school system in the United States. When asked if German schooling began with kinder- garten, she said. Of course we have kin- dergarten. itās a German word!ā In Ger- many the children start in the primary grades: kindergarten through fourth, then advance to another level of educa- tion which is fifth through ninth grade. Then they go to the middle level which is tenth grade. After tenth grade the stu- dents may attend the university or leave school. If a student plans on attending the University, he must attend the higher lev- el which is the eleventh through thir- teenth grade. A student may enter the university only if he has completed the highest level of education and has passed a difficult test. Maren stated that some wait a couple of years before going to the University. Maren found Dixon much like her home town, but thought Dixon was more con- servative. Maren spent the year with Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Kemmeren. Maren was a junior and her classes were Band. Psy- chology. Painting and Drawing. English, Biology and Physical Education. The music was mostly Rock-n-Roll with the words in English not Spanish. Anabel said English was taught to her from 6th grade on up. She found some classes, such as Algebra, easier in the United States than in Spain. Others she found to be harder. One difference she noticed about High School was that the freshmen mingle with the other students in AmericaĀ they donāt in Spain. When asked about food, Anabel re- plied. I love everything my aunt cooks. I especially like American pizza better than pizza in Spain. She had a good time visiting at Dixon High School and took home many memo- ries. The World To Dixon High School Rossana Catapang Rossana Catapang came to the United States to learn about the culture and to improve her English. Rossana was a Ro- tary Exchange student from Manila in the Philippines. Manila is the Philippines capi- tal and largest city. There are some similarities and differ- ences that Rossana noticed. The clothes styles in America are quite similiar to those worn in the Philippines. Teenagers in the Philippines like the same music as American teenagers do. Rossana noted. Duran Duran was one of Rossanaās favor- ite groups. The school system was the biggest difference Rossana noticed. In the Philippines grades 1-5 are equivalent to elementry school in the United States. Grades 7-10 are equivalent to High School in the United States. After completing grade 10. the student may enter college by passing an entrance exam. Rossana was the youngest child in her family. Her father was an optamologist and her mother was an optamitrist. Ros- sana had two brothers: Rodgie age 20 and Rellie who was 19. She also had four sis- ters: Candie who was 27, Thet who was 26 and married. Cecil who was 24 and Nonnie who was 23. Rossana liked American food. Steak, french fries, and hamburgers headed the list of favorites. What did she like least? Tomatoes. Rossana was staying with Dr. and Mrs. Robert LeSage. She found Dixon much like her home town even though Dixon was much colder. She found the people in Dix- on very helpful and friendly. She had an enjoyable stay in Dixon and had a lot of happy memories to take home with her. Dorotheā Van Ouyen Dorothe Van Ouyen was staying with Mr. and Mrs. Al Tieken. Mr. Tieken was a teacher at Dixon High School. Dortheā was from Broekhuizen. Holland where she lived with her mother and father and 17 year old sister. Debbie. Her father owned a chicken farm, but her mother was the boss' . Dorotheā liked sports. She particularly liked water polo when she was in Holland. She also liked to bicycle, noting that ev- eryone in Holland likes to cycle. Music in Holland was similiar to that in the United States. Duran Duran. Culture Club, and the Eurythmics were popular. When comparing Dixon to Broekhuizen Dorotheā noticed many differences. One was the language. In Holland they speak Dutch and learn English in school. Dixon was much larger than Broekhuizen. but was also dirtier. Dixon had no disco which was something almost always found in towns in Aurope. Dixon had a theater which Broekhuizen did not. Dor- otheā noted that the legal drinking age in Holland was 16. Kids in Holland do not go out and drink to get drunk like kids in America do. Dorotheā said. Dorotheās Favorite foods were choco- late and pizza. Give her anything choco- late and she would eat it. Dorotheās schedule this year was as follows: Foods. Clothing. Spanish. History. Drivers Education. Physical Education, and Robed Choir. Second semester Foods and Clothing were replaced with Psychol- ogy and Speech. The year was an enjoyable for Dorotheā and many good times will be remem- bered. QS£°o Kent Johansen welcomes Kiwanls Golden Kā Members: Virgil Wasson. Elwood Cruse. Robert Lewellyn and Robert Wurtz. Golden 'Kā Sponsors Yearbook The Dixon Golden Kā Kiwanis Club de- serves a very big thanks this year. If it were not for them no one would be able to have a yearbook. Last year due to budget cuts the yearbook advisor increment was cut. Mr. German and Mr. Johansen were speaking to the Golden Kā about the problems and they mentioned the need for a sponsor for the yearbook. Mr. El- wood Cruse, the President at the time, brought up the suggestion to sponsor the yearbook and after discussion it was al- most unanimous in favor of the high school students. The club decided to sponsor the year- book because they remembered how im- portant the yearbook was to them when they were in high school. Mrs. Bennett and her mass media classes from last year collected newspa- pers for recycling. The Kiwanis started the paper drive to raise funds and it has been on going ever since. The other Fund raiser the Kiwanis sponsored was a shop- ping spree. They sold tickets for chances at a $200 shopping spree. On behalf of the yearbook staff and the entire student body I would like to thank the Dixon Gold- en Kā for sponsoring this yearās Dixon- ian. Andrea Fox Editor. Instead of having 5 academic periods and P.E.. the schedule was changed to only 4 academics and a combination P.E. Health. It was difficult to schedule classes. Some had a study hall to solve conflicts. But despite these major difficulties, the fresh- men had a super yearl The DHS Student Council helped contribute to this. The freshmen Stuco committee members were: Community Services- Kathy JohnsonĀ Public Relations-Liz Anderson and Chris HarshmanĀ Parent Involvement-Becky Sto- ver and Colleen LaheyĀ School Spirit-Carl Johnson and Traci BrimmĀ Publicity-Larry HillĀ Commu- nications-Sophy HongĀ and Dynamics-Dawn Boehle. The Academic Booster Corporation was formed by some concerned people from each Parent-Teachers Organization in the elementary schools. When the local school board pointed out the enormous debt they had accumulated due to cuts in Federal and State aid and inflation, this group decided to help form the Academic Booster Corporation (ABC). They felt that, as the sports booster group. Save Our Sports (SOS) planned to aid the sports program financially, it was also impor- tant to support the academic programs which were being cut back. A representative was requested from each school. The high school repre- sentatives were Bob Leslie and student delegate, Janet Slain. Officers for the 1984-85 school year were: Merrie Lou Hopkins, President-, Tom LaMoine, Vice-Presidents Bob Leslie. Treasurers and Marion Morey, Sec- retary, board members: Shelba Wolf, John Cover and Barry Royster. As of January, their efforts had produced about $4,200. During the Dixon Petunia Festival 1984, the ABC presented a float that won the Queenās Trophy in the parade. The ABC also held a fund-raising break- fast at the airport during the Festival. The main concern of this organization is the improvement of the academic offerings in our public school system. The members of the corporation worked (long hours) on committees to aid in the passing of the school referendum. Committees were formed for making phone calls, publicizing events, making presentations to local groups, and poll- watching. The students of Dixon thank them for their efforts and wish them continued success in the future. Thank you! Left Merrie Lou Hopkins explaines a money making project to John Cover. Above Dave Schaab. Their record for the season was ll-l. Dixon won first place in the Rochelle Invitational. They received second-place ties in the East Moline and Boylan Invitationals. They placed third in the NCIC meet. At the sectionals in Ster- ling, Dixon received fourth. The Duchesses had four varsity players returning from last year. They were Julie Dickinson; Tracy Houcks Michele Huns- berger, the most valuable players and team captain. Liz Kennedy. Liz and Mi- chele went to the State Tournament in Arlington Heights for doubles competi- tion and lost in the first round. Soccer is definitely a team sport. SOCCER TEAM GOES 5-9 Thanks to the Dixon Youth Soccer league, a group of area businesses who sponsored the team, and coach Steve Keegan, the soccer team completed a successful second season this year. The varsity squad overcame the loss of three starting players who moved at the begin- ning of the year and a much tougher schedule than last year to accomplish a respectable 5-9 mark. The DHS soccer team kicked off the season at Sauk Valley College with a 10-3 loss to Waterman, which was followed by tough one-point losses to Shabbona and Freeport. Dixon then got their first win. defeating Rockford Christian 2-1, before suffering their only shutout of the year in Moline. After losing three of the next four games by a total of four points, the Dukes hit their stride in the last five games, including a 1-0 overtime win at Sycamore, a 3-1 triumph over Rockford Auburn in the regular season finale, and a 2-1 defeat of Serena in the opening game of the regionals. The soccer team closed out the season with a hard-fought game against Shabbona and led 2-1 before suc- cumbing in the second round of the re- gionals. Key players for Dixon this year includ- ed center forward Mike Washburn, who led the Dukes in scoring with 14 goals, goalie Pat Fordham. halfback John Ja- cobs, and senior Kent Workman, who played forward. The JV team finished with a record of 4-6 and won the Malta JV tournament, defeating DeKalb. Leaf River, and Malta. The DFIS soccer team improved im- mensely this year, and next year prom- ises to be even better with 10 of this yearās II starters returning. A crispy fall night at the bleachers with the smell of popcorn and the sound of cheering. Yes. although our Varsity Dukes didnāt exactly have a win- ning season they sure were fun to watch! Unfortunately a mishap of many injuries slowed our boys down. For instance we lost 23-8 to DeKalb and 12-0 to Streator. Remember winning 35-0 to Rochelle and winning 15-14 to Princeton. In the Princeton game there were only a few seconds left to go! John Dixon and John Bay as guards, Wes Trent and Mike Williar at tackles really had control. Thatās what it took to win and they did it. Hooray to the guys for their effort and determination. At the annual awards banquet the following awards were given: Special Team Player - Sean Quick, Offense - Harold Stinson, Defense - John Bay, Captain John Bay, Floyd Busā Egler Award (Most Improved Sr.) - Mike Magdich. and Dixon Telegraph MVP Award - John Bay. Our Sophomores with Coach Jenning, Coach Lawton and Dale Anderson had a better season. They had a lot of confidence and definitely showed it in most of their games. An example of this is when they hammered Rochelle with a score of 24-6. Ron Griffen was the star for that game. He recorded 175 yards and 21 carries! What Potential! We also over powered Rock Falls with a score of 33-8. As coach Jennings said, āāWe just happened to gel and everybody came through and did their job.ā So letās hear it for our Sophomores. Our Freshmen had an interesting season. Their records was 2-4 with two ties. A good win was over Sterling, the score being 26-12! A tie was with DeKalb being 15-15. Overall they had a pretty good season matched with much effort. Thanks guys for a hardworking year! Pic I. When Coach Lawton talks people listen. Pic 2. The Dukes call an offense. Pic 3. Hey. REMAN COUNTRY PRESENTS TMPICO DIX0A ESplaS both Many changes occurred in the DHS pom pon and cheerleading squads this year. The squads were both under new leadership this year as Mrs. Paula East- man and Mrs. Judy Williamson took over the pom pon squad and Mrs. Louise Cor- ken the cheerleaders. Another change was that the squads were all chosen in the fall of the school year when usually they had been chosen in the spring of the year before. Twenty-five girls comprised the pom-pons and there were ten Varsity and Ten Sophomore cheerleaders. The pom-pons had a busy year as they performed at all qf the home football games, held a fundraiser along with the cheerleaders, and also performed at the home basketball games. The squad per- forms some special routines during bas- ketball season such as Jitterbugā with the Male pom-pon squad , a punk rou- tine, and a routine on Seniorsā Night that featured future pom-pon girls. The highlight of the year for these girls though was finding out that they, along with Tampico's marching band had been accepted to march in President Reagansā Inaugural Parade. After this announce- ment was made, the squads started prac- ticing their routine and polishing march- ing skills almost every night of the week. After the girls along with help from the community and Mr. Buss raised enough funds, they were off! After finally arriv- ing in Washington after a lengthy bus ride, they found out that the parade had been cancelled due to freezing tempera- tures. But even so, the squads had a very exciting and memorable trip . . Top above: Dawn Schick. Tammy Humphrey. Chris To- var. Shelly Stouffer pose. Bottom above: Missy Walcott. Sheri Cannon. In addition to finishing third in the Rockford E-Rab Tournament, third in their own Dixon Invitational, and fifth in the NCIC meet in Streator, Dixon placed ninth in a field of 23 teams at the Sterling Invitational and received second at the Ottawa Invitational. The high point of the season, however, came during the regional at Ledges Golf Course in Roscoe, where Steve Wallace shot a phenomenal 32 on the final nine holes, including five straight birdies. Steve earned medal- ist honors and placed Dixon to a surprising third place finish, advancing both the team and Wallace as an individual to the sectionals. At the sectionals in L-P, difficult playing conditions on the golf course limited the concentration of the golfers and the ill-timed rains washed away all hopes of state competition for Steve Wallace and Dixon, as the team finished eighth when third place was needed to qualify. Although Dixon failed to reach the state playoffs, it was a very good year for all DHS golfers individually. Juniors Duke Franklin and Scott Hargrave missed qualifying for the sectional as individuals by one stroke, and seniors Lee Kanzler and Bill Detweiller also had fine years. The fresh-soph team did very well, too. compiling an undefeated mark of 10-0 and finishing eighth at the NCIC Invitational in Geneseo. Steve Wallace displays his winning form. BOYS VARSITY GOLF. WINNING SEASONS It was another outstanding year for the girlsā golf team, as the Duchesses posted a sensational 9-4 record. The girls also had much success at tournaments, includ- ing a second place finish in the Dixon Invitational at the Country Club and finishing in fifth place out of eleven teams at the highly- regarded Champaign Invitational. At Sandy Hollow Golf Course in Rockford, the site of the regionals, the girlsā team received second place and Angie Blaine was the runner-up medalist with an 89. After advancing to the sectionals, Dixon faced much of the same caliber opposition they encountered in the Champaign Invitational and ended the season with a sixth place finish in a nine-team field. Angie Blaine had the lowest average score, hitting 46.8 this year and Sue Larkin had the best 9-hole average (47.4). For the third straight year, both the boysā and girlsā golf teams made it to sectional competition, which reveals the excellent coaching and an emerging win- ning tradition at DHS. GIRLS GOLF. This year the team had some strong indi- vidual runners. Sid Aurand. a Senior, was Dixonās top runner. Aurand set three course records during the season at Rock Falls, at Freeport, and at Hall Invitationals. Aurand also finished 1st at the Rock Falls. Dixon and Freeport Invitationals. and placed second at the Oregon and Galesburg Invitationals. Aur- and placed 4th at Regionals, earning him a trip to Sectionals where he qualified for State by finishing 3rd. At State Aurand fin- ished at an honorable 10th place. Other strong runners for the Dukes were Brian Bushman, a Senior; Al Roling, a Sophomore; Dennis Lee. a Sophomore; and Robert Dowell, a Freshman. NCIC All Conference runners on the Fresh-Soph level were Roling and Dowell and on the Varsity level Aurand. With a new enthusiastic group of incom- ing freshmen and returning sophomore and junior runners, the Dukes look to the future. DUCHESSāS GO TO SECTIONALS In their third year of existence the Duchesses cross-country team compiled a dual meet record of I to 5. The Duchesses still had an impressive season, placing second in both the Rock Falls and Byron Invitationals. Though hampered by injuries, the girls placed 5th at Regionals, which earned the team a trip to the sectional and they earned a 15th place at the Sectional meet. Aware of the teams vast improvement, the girlsā goal for the next season is a trip to the State meet. Leaders for the Duchesses individually throughout the season were Kandie Wilhelm and Gwen Sherwood. Wilhelm, a Junior, had an im- pressive season, placing 1st at both the Byron and Oregon Invitationals and 2nd at Regional. Sher- wood, a Sophomore, also had an impressive sea- son, placing 2nd at the Rock Falls Invitational and 3rd at both the Rockford West and Galesburg Invitationals. Other outstanding runners for the Duchesses were Kara Longtin, a Junior, Tammy Stienstra, a Sophomore, and Andrea Eichstadt, a Freshman. Longtin and Wilhelm were NCIC All Conference runners. These runners showed vast improvement, and helped carry the team to an impressive season. With the whole squad returning next year, lead by varsity letter winners Wilhelm, Sherwood, and Longtin, they hope for an even more impressive season. 1 Girl Cross Country Front Row. The Duchesses beat an ex- tremely competitive Rock Island team and lost two close games to powerhouse Sterling during the season. In addition to their abili- ty to get better and better, Dixon showed much team- work. with Kris Canterbury as high scorer. After several years of championship success, the girlsā varsity team got off to a slow start and strug- gled throughout an up and down season, yet still managed to surpass the .500 mark. The Duchesses were held back by the loss of Senior Dee Russell for several games and an inability to contain the scoring of opponents (Dixon allowed 58 or more points in six of its 12 losses), but acquired a well-earned 15-12 season. The Duchesses began the season auspiciously with a big win over Rock Falls before dropping the next three contests, the last to Freeport in the opening game of the Dixon Invitational. In the con- sulat ion finals of the tournament, the girls lost to a fine St. Edward team 63-53. Dixon then hit a hot streak, winning four straight before falling in the Limsetone Tourney to three of the best teams in the state: Moline. Limestone, and Morton. The Duchesses broke the .500 barrier for good with back to back victories over Mendota and Rock Falls, then split their next four games before the perennial dogfight with NCIC power Sterling. Dixon dominated the boards and the game throughout the first half, but Sterling slowly gained the momentum and scoring edge by the end of the third quarter and eventually won 58-45. The Duchesses quickly avenged that loss by ham- mering Ottawa 76-57 in Dixon's most impressive showing of the year. The girls concluded the regular season by winning two of their final three encoun- ters. ending the year by downing Princeton 42-31 and finishing with a 7-3 NCIC mark. Several individuals on the team turned in excep- tional performances this year. Dee Russell led the team in both scoring and rebounding, and contribut- ed 33 points in the Ottawa game. The Duchesses drew frequently on the leadership of guard Darlene Adams and outstanding defense of Dayle Bridge- man. Juniors Angie Blaine and Sonja Nicklaus added dimension to the offense, as did sophomore Lisa Adams, who was moved to the varsity squad at mid- season and contributed 14 points in the game against Streator. After slipping past surprising Ro- chelle 47-46 to open the Sterling Regional, the Duch- esses again faced the Golden Girls, this time for the regional championship. Dixon led early in the game and outscored host Sterling 27-20 in the last half, but a bad second quarter ended the hopes of Cham- paign for the Duchesses. HOOPSHOTS. Pic I. The tipoff.. Pic 2. Missy Beede The 1984-85 Varsity Cheerleading Squad had a lot of excitement during their active year. The girls were invited to go with the Pom Pon Squad to Washington D.C. for President Reaganās Inaugural Parade. To the dismay of all involved, the parade was cancelled on account of the weather, but a special ceremony took place at the Capitol Center. While in D.C. the girls did much sightseeing and had quite a trauma with the bus trip and the food, but overall the experience will be cherished forever. Mrs. Louise Corken was the volunteer coach this year and did an excellent job preparing the girls for the games. Mrs. Corken had four freshman squads who cheered an average of three or four games each. She thought that having four squads would help the girls gain experience for later years. All the squads had pep and spirit. The varsity squad was fortunate enough to lead the high school crowd in doing The Waveā at many games. Soph Squad. Front: Left To Right. Angie Wentling. The recipient must accumulate points through his teaching career to be consid- ered for the award. Judging is based on time and devotion to FFA along with various ac- tivities and awards the chapter has re- ceived. The Ag teacher receives points for offices he has held. Points are also obtained from awards received through Local. State National FFA activities. Mr. Tieken has been obtaining point since 1955 when he began teaching. The award would not have been possible without the help of the students in the FFA chapter. This year's Dixon FFA chapter was busy from the start. The chapterās safety pro- grams included taking pictures at area im- plement dealers to show safety features and to learn safety techniques around farm ma- chinery. The chapter helped learning dis- abilities students learn how to drive lawn mowers. The chapter helped restore the Su- gar Grove Church and School and helped build up the river bank in front of the high school. They also worked at the FFA test plot next to Pizza Hut. This yearās officers were Eric Gerdes. President; Bill Metzen, Vice President; Deana Dunham, Secretary; Brian Toms. Treasurer; Jim Lance. Centenial; and Dean Blackburn. Historian. Several Students traveled to Kansas City to the National FFA Convention where Mr. Tieken received his award. Those attending the convention were Eric Gerdes, Brian Toms, Kevin Strock, Dean Blackburn, Deana Dunham. Pam Yockum. Dorthe Van Oyen, Bill Metzen, and Mr. and Mrs. Tieken. Pic. I. In October the choir attended the confer- ence music festival at Princeton High School. Also in November selected members of the choir participated in the District Jazz and Chorus program at Northern Illinois Uni- versity. Robed choir officers included Mike Law- ton, Treasurer-, Mindy Keith, Secretary; Shel- ly Stouffer. Vice-President; and Liz Johnson, President. Secion leaders were Terri Cicero. Sopranos; John Dixon. Basses; Greg Smith, Tenors; and Kristi Peterson, Altos. Second semester began with three mem- bers traveling to Peoria to participate in the prestigious All-State Jazz and Chorus Festi- val. Norman Feczko, Shelly Stouffer, and Kristi Peterson represented DHS. Second se- mester included the Mid-Winter Choral Concert and in the spring the Pop Show. The Christmas concert had a special meaning to the choirs as it was Mr. Wiltzās birthday. The choirs with the help of Mrs. Wiltz threw a party for him after the con- cert. The 1984-1985 Choir was smaller then it has been in previous years, but as always the hard work and dedication of the singers made this year's choir a success. Pic. I. This Year Student Council was governed by Janet Slain, Presi- dentĀ Mike Lawton. Vice-PresidentĀ Mandy Hull. SecretaryĀ and Brad Dixon. Treasurer. This year the council divided into ten committees with council members serving on these committees. The council officers along with Mr. Dick, the advisor, set goals for the committees to reach. A Community Service Committee was set up to help the Red Cross organize blood mobiles and to help with the Cancer Drive. The Public Relations Committee developed a slide show to be shown at various churches and service clubs in the area. Support School Activities had the council members make council reports to second hour classes. Fund Raising loved making money. They conducted various fund raisers during the year. School Spirit made posters announcing various sports events dur- ing the week and decorated the halls for Christmas. The Publicity Commitee wrote articles for the Dixini and notified the Telegraph and area radio stations of council activities. A Communication Committee communicated with the administration to set up times to hold various council events. Dynamics of Club Operation wrote a constitution for the council. Sponsor Activities were busy from the start planning Homecoming Activities and the Christmas As- sembly. Parent Involvement contacted parents to chaperone at dances and other council events. The Leadership Conference was held in early December at Camp Reynoldswood. A three part module was present by the officers along with video tapes by Mark Sharenbraugh from Jos- tens. Members of the council selected by the officers to partici- pate in activities were given an above and beyondā solid gold plastic star. Members tried to incorporate the knowledge gained from the conference to plan the rest of the councilās activities. Nannettee Trotter and Dayle Bridgeman did a great job planning this year's Leadership Conference. Council members worked vary hard selling programs at football games and operating the concession stand at basketball games. StuCo members had fun planning this years activities, but none of this could have been possible without the help of our advisor Mr. Otto Dick. Community Service, left to right: Kathy Johnson. The cast included: Paul Whitcombe as Ivanha. John Dixon as Friar Rico, Michelle Emery as Belinda. Janet Slain as Nina, Melissa Walcott as Corsicana, Bob Thompson as Viscera, Norman Feczko as Medulla, Pat Frost as Shecky, Missy Beede as Astrid, Hal Lennen as Friar Fred, Mandy Hull as Lady Lenore, Karen Jensen as Gwen, Reni Monteith as Mama, David Peters as Chester, Jody Heacock as Trudy, Wayne Hoy as Director. Bob Dixon as Soundperson and Felippe, Mike Magdich as Rashad, Tom Wilson as LightpersonĀ the Ladies of the Court were Hyun Joo Chung, Jenny Drexell. Chris Fordham, Jody Heacock, Reni Monteith, Rhonda Montheith, Penny Sherwood, Cindy WhitcombeĀ the Knights were Dan Kirk, Ken Masters, Brian McGuire, Dave Peters, Larry Riffle and Brian WalkĀ the Heralds were Larry Hill and Dennis LeeĀ Sean Rock was the Drummer. The story began as Belinda asked Friar Rico to tell her the story of Ivanaha, the worst story in the world. King Isador of Saxonia had gone to war and left in control his self-serving, smarmy brother, Viscera. He also left behind his wife, Nina, his daughter, Corsicana and his baby son. Ivanha. Viscera and the two vermin in his employ, Medulla and Shecky, planned to kidnap Ivanha so Viscera could be King. Nina, having learned of the plot against Ivanha. foiled the plan with the aid of Corsicana, carrying everything, including the royal throne, and fleeing into the dark forest. Realizing they would be caught. Nina and Corsicana left Ivanha in the forest and left with him his throne which they tied to his neck. Ivanha was raised by squirrels and lived fourteen years in the forestĀ until he found out he was not a squirrel. He left his home. Mama and Chester, to face the world of man. Cold and tired. Ivanha rested in the forest where he was found by Friar Fred. Founder of Dabney Abby. Fred took Ivanha back to the abbey to educate him in the ways of man and removed the throne from around his neck. Ivanha's Ivanha (Paul Whitcombe) on his horse. HiHo Sil- ver.ā studies progressed into his senior year when he net Lady Lenore of the House of Usher. She stole his heart, but she was betrothed to Viscera. The only way Ivanha could free Lady Lenore was to accept the Challenge of the Druid Prom Queen, so he did. As the challenge began, Ivanha requested a dance with Viscera. Viscera stated that he never danced with a man who wore a bucket on his headĀ Ivanha removed his bucket and shocked Vis- cera ā Ivanha had returned. The dance proceeded with the two dealing blows to one another as the dance built up intensity. Then, Viscera's men, Shecky and Medulla, appeared and battered Ivanha to the floor. With the help of Mama and Chester, Ivanha recovered and faced Viscera once again. Shecky and Medullaās plot against Ivanha was foiled by the squirrels, and it was Ivanha against Viscera at last. Near defeat. Viscera drew a paint brush which was wrenched from his hand by the squirrels. Viscera was defeated. The story ended as Friar Fred crowned Ivanha King of Saxonia and Ivanha called Lady Lenore to be his wife. They made their way to the churchĀ Friar Fred had a marriage to perform. Once again DeVoe Manning with a fabulous cast, brought rounds of laughter into the DHS auditorium. The Worst High School Play in the Worldā was far from the worst. i Jc Pic. Left: Aren't I Cute? he Dixonian Staff This year Dixonian has put together a miracle and presents Traveling Through the Year. We chose to have footprints walk through our book as one way of caring our theme through the book. This year Mrs. Geraldine French returned as staff advisor. Mrs. Leslie Knicl also helped advise the staff. Andrea Fox, our fearless editor, had to put up with many different problems, such as pages not completed to make dead- lines and not having enough pictures to cover the pages. But with the help of Kathi Boehle and the long hours which they contributed perser- verance finally paid off. Other staff members, spent time laying out pages, writing copy on classes and subjects, and making index cards. Those members included Shaun Swarts. Kelly Ames. Trisha Varga. Nancy Zigler. Deb Ferger. Kara Longtin. Nancy Cowley. Chris Hale. Kim McIn- tyre. Karen Brown. Shelly Mills and Brian McGuire. Chris Hale and Karen Brown also kept busy drawing artwork for the pages. With pages laid out and copy written the pages would not be complete without pictures. Yes. those wonderful candids of you that you wish were not in this book are in this book! Jody Dyche and Andy McBride provided photographs and Jennifer Hoffman assisted Jody in printing the pictures. Due to budget cuts a year ago this spring, funds for the yearbook were cut. Mrs. Carol Bennett and her Mass Media class had a paper drive to help pay for part of the cost of the yearbook. The Golden 'Kā' Kiwanis raised the remainder of the funds needed to defray the cost of publishing the yearbook. This yearbook might not have been possible without the help of these people. Thank You! The 1984-1985 yearbook staff hopes you enjoy the book. We also hope that the book will be very memorable in years to come. Enjoy reading the book, we (the staff) had fun putting it together. Because it was an extra-curricular activity and was not a credited course, the group met approxi- mately three times a month in room 114 to put togeth- er the paper. The paper was published by Tri-County Press in Polo and was then distributed to the stu- dents by members of the staff. This yearās editor was Paul Whitcombe, famed for his column āāPaulās Epistle.ā News reporter for page one were Greg Gates. Shaun Swarts and Janet Slain. Editorials were written by Mike Washburn and Jacki LeSage on page two. Contributions to the Features pages were made by Rachael German, Julie Craft, Barb Chidley. Reni Monteith, Jody Heacock, and Missy Matsko. Sports writers Brad Dixon, Mike Law- ton, and Karen Jensen filled the last pages of the Dixini. This courageous staff with the aid of Sue Lawton worked hard to put together a monthly newspaper dealing with the life at DHS. Dixini Staff. First row. left to right: Missy Matsko. Jody Heacock. Each semester a com- pany name was selected and officers were elected. Wayne Hoy was elected President both semesters. The first semester company was very out-going and prosperous. The stu- dents selected a company name of BRIGHT HORIZONS and sold flash lights, earning their sales goal of $2000. This goal put them in first place in the sales category for the Quad Cities District. Students in first semes- ter that showed outstanding salesmanship ability were Jeff Cleden. Robert Scott, and Julia Pumper. All of the BRIGHT HORIZON employees selected to send all profits to the Cancer Fund. The second semester company started in the third week of January, but they were off to a great start. The company chose the name BEST EVER, and they hoped to live up to their name. Sales product chosen for second se- mester was birdfeeders. Pic. I: First semester J.A. members Row !ā Stacy Burke. Becky Bufford. Wendy McKinnon. Amy OāRourke. Traci Co . Liz Vaile.
