The 1983-84 edition of the varsity Dukes was an epitome of tough luck. The Dukes began the season on a bright note with respectable performances in the Amboy and Princeton Holiday tournaments. Although the Dukes finished second at Amboy, the players and coaches felt disappointed because the title was taken by Class 'A’ Mt. Morris. After the Christmas Holidays the Dukes fell into a terrible streak of bad luck. Losses to Kewanee and Mendota, teams they had beaten earlier in the season, were compounded by the additional loss of junior enforcer Tom Wilson. Over coming the loss of Wilson was a struggle, but the Dukes played a series of close games with Class 'A' powerhouses Ottawa. Marquette. Rockridge and conference foe Princeton. As if the Dukes below par season was not enough, the varsity was dealt a severe ego blow when mentor Herb Jennings replaced the starting lineup with sophomores in the annual rivalry with Newman. Although this caused an uproar among the players, the Dukes managed to pull through and complete their season with a defeat at the tough DeKalb Regional. At the Dukes annual awards banquet, senior Todd Struhs was named Captain and Kyle Dalke was named Most Valuable Player. -by Kyle Dalke 21
