Freshmen The sophomores showed a great amount of improvement toward the end of the season. Even though they lost to Men- dota. the team discovered that they could play with the best. They proved this by beating Sterling who posted a 12-1 record. They ended the season at 6-9. Row I Johnna Thompson. Karla Jaques. Sheila Spencer. Tina Consuelos. Connie Smith. LeAnn Crow. The Sterling game may have shown this team that they had improved. Because of a time problem at Sterling, they were only allowed to play ten minutes, but those ten minutes were highlighted by several spikes and ace serves. 14

State Finalists For the first time in the history of Dixon High School sports, the volleyball Duchesses went to State. Their road to Springfield was rocky when they started their season with a disappointing loss to Oregon, but came back with three victories against the Newman. Mt. Morris, and E. Moline teams. A powerful Princeton squad halted their winning streak and the Duchesses began to lose confi- dence in their abilities. They went into their Invitational with a positive attitude, concentrated on working together, and finished a strong third. On a high note, after defeating Kewanee. arch rival Sterling. Hall Twp. the Duchesses went into the Dixon Regional realizing they had the capability of winning the tournament. And, that’s exactly what they didl The unanswered losses at the beginning of the season were avenged when the Duchesses swept the Regional by defeating LaSalle Peru and Princeton. From this point, the Duch- esses advanced to the Rockford (Guilford) Sectional and defeated two tough opponents, Belvidere and Rock Falls, both in three game matches. The smell of State was in the air. The Duchesses had to defeat Streator in Sterling’s Super-Sectional to advance to the Illinois State Finals. The Duchesses played a strong match and defeated Streator in two games. Dixon’s starting spikers Julie Baker, Diane Biggs. Sarah Collins, and Dee Russell had an average height of 5'H” and they used their height and strength to advantage by hitting ace spikes and block- ing opponents spikes. Setters Karen Dir and Chris Young consis- tently set to the spikers and with their help the girls worked together as a team. The other members of the team played a special part in the girls’ success because of their strong bench support and the coaching of Roberta Thompson and Kay Schrock. Row I. Chris Young. Julie Baker. A strong Oak Forest team was the first opponent the Duchesses encountered. Unfortunately. Dixon struggled and lost hopes of advancement. However, the prestige of earning a place in the Elite Eight’’ was an honor bestowed upon very few. At the end of the season Karen Dir was named to the First Team All-Conference, Diane Biggs. Second Team All- Conference, Sarah Collins, Honorable Mention, and Julie Baker, Dee Russell, and Chris Young received a Special Mention. Volleyball 13

Soccer DHS had something new this year and it’s here to stay thanks to the efforts of local businessmen and one very important person. Steve Keegan. The new something” I’m talking about is football. But. you say what's so new about football? We’ve had that so long Ronald Reagan played on the team.” The sport I’m talking about may be better known to most of us as soccer. The program originated back when I was in junior high and has been growing by leaps and bounds ever since. But. it wasn’t until this year that the Dukes had their own team that finished with an impressive 6-80 record for a team with a frosh majority and only four seniors. We started out the season with Bruce Bennett and Steve Nagy, as co- captains against a tough Rockford West team, and we were beaten by a score of 7-2. Both our goals were scored by freshman Freddie Dunseth. Then came the Malta Tournament in which we won two, lost one. and tied one to come out with a record of 2-2-1. Our next game was against a powerhouse Shabbona team, who we would later play in the first round of regional competition and be beaten 5-0. They handed us our third loss of the season with a score of 6-0. The next game was our first home game at Sauk Valley College, where we came back and beat Rockford Jefferson 4-2. We then played Waterman J.V., Leaf River. Rockford Guilford. Rockford Jefferson. Rockford Christian, and Leaf River again to come out with a 6-7-1 mark, winding down toward the season’s end. A fine performance was turned in each one of these games by Sr. Bruce Bennett, Noel Fane, and Kent Workman; these three all played aggressive games and helped put us back on our feet again several times. Some others that deserve as much or more praise on their playing efforts were Lu Yang, who sparked several scoring attacks, Au Yang, whose antics on the field held us up. Ge Vang. Jeff Murphy, our star goalie, Mike Washburn, who was a coach’s dream with his attitude and hustle, and our own leather-clad casualty. Craig Kobler. who broke his ankle in the Leaf River game. We ended our season tying Dekalb J.V. 3-3 and our biggest loss came in the opening game of regionals where an aggressive Shabbona team beat us 5-0 after we held them scoreless throughout the first half. — Steve Nagy Row I.
