Halftime was postponed until after the game and held in Lancaster Gym. The Dixon High School Marching Band opened the festivi- ties. They were joined by the Jazz Show Choir, who per- formed the popular Movinâ On Up. The program came to a close with songs performed by the band Looker. Mandy Hull is to be accredited with the success of the 1983 Homecoming Halftime. The students participated in Spirit Week by suiting their attire to the theme of the day. Purple and White Day was modified to Toga Day by many upperclassmen. The week came to a climactic conclusion with the Homecom- ing Dance held on Saturday night at the Masonic Temple. The assembly was opened with the Dixon High School Band playing a medley of Christmas songs. The feature movie was The Best Years of Your Life So Far.â The Pom Pons and the Trojans (Dixon High Schoolâs male version of the Pom Pon squad), did a hilariously entertaining routine. DHS was honored with the pres- ence of the world reknowned Blues Brothers, Jim Barber and Doug Trader. After a yearâs absence and a casting change. Santa Claus returned. The last segment of our Christmas Assembly, which has become a tradition in itself, was the slide show. Slide Show 3ft 9 Fall Sports Awkward But Awesome Q Volleyball State Finalists For the first time in the history of Dixon High School sports, the volleyball Duchesses went to State. Their road to Springfield was rocky when they started their season with a disappointing loss to Oregon, but came back with three victories against the Newman. Mt. Morris, and E. Moline teams. A powerful Princeton squad halted their winning streak and the Duchesses began to lose confi- dence in their abilities. They went into their Invitational with a positive attitude, concentrated on working together, and finished a strong third. On a high note, after defeating Kewanee. arch rival Sterling. Hall Twp. the Duchesses went into the Dixon Regional realizing they had the capability of winning the tournament. And, thatâs exactly what they didl The unanswered losses at the beginning of the season were avenged when the Duchesses swept the Regional by defeating LaSalle Peru and Princeton. From this point, the Duch- esses advanced to the Rockford (Guilford) Sectional and defeated two tough opponents, Belvidere and Rock Falls, both in three game matches. The smell of State was in the air. The Duchesses had to defeat Streator in Sterlingâs Super-Sectional to advance to the Illinois State Finals. The Duchesses played a strong match and defeated Streator in two games. Dixonâs starting spikers Julie Baker, Diane Biggs. Sarah Collins, and Dee Russell had an average height of 5'Hâ and they used their height and strength to advantage by hitting ace spikes and block- ing opponents spikes. Setters Karen Dir and Chris Young consis- tently set to the spikers and with their help the girls worked together as a team. The other members of the team played a special part in the girlsâ success because of their strong bench support and the coaching of Roberta Thompson and Kay Schrock. Row I. Chris Young. Julie Baker. A strong Oak Forest team was the first opponent the Duchesses encountered. Unfortunately. Dixon struggled and lost hopes of advancement. However, the prestige of earning a place in the Elite Eightââ was an honor bestowed upon very few. At the end of the season Karen Dir was named to the First Team All-Conference, Diane Biggs. The freshman record (3-7) may look dismal, yet they pro- gressed in many areas by the season's end. The Sterling game may have shown this team that they had improved. Because of a time problem at Sterling, they were only allowed to play ten minutes, but those ten minutes were highlighted by several spikes and ace serves. 14 Soccer DHS had something new this year and itâs here to stay thanks to the efforts of local businessmen and one very important person. Steve Keegan. The new somethingâ Iâm talking about is football. But. you say what's so new about football? Weâve had that so long Ronald Reagan played on the team.â The sport Iâm talking about may be better known to most of us as soccer. The program originated back when I was in junior high and has been growing by leaps and bounds ever since. But. it wasnât until this year that the Dukes had their own team that finished with an impressive 6-80 record for a team with a frosh majority and only four seniors. We started out the season with Bruce Bennett and Steve Nagy, as co- captains against a tough Rockford West team, and we were beaten by a score of 7-2. Both our goals were scored by freshman Freddie Dunseth. Then came the Malta Tournament in which we won two, lost one. and tied one to come out with a record of 2-2-1. Our next game was against a powerhouse Shabbona team, who we would later play in the first round of regional competition and be beaten 5-0. They handed us our third loss of the season with a score of 6-0. The next game was our first home game at Sauk Valley College, where we came back and beat Rockford Jefferson 4-2. We then played Waterman J.V., Leaf River. Rockford Guilford. Rockford Jefferson. Rockford Christian, and Leaf River again to come out with a 6-7-1 mark, winding down toward the seasonâs end. A fine performance was turned in each one of these games by Sr. Bruce Bennett, Noel Fane, and Kent Workman; these three all played aggressive games and helped put us back on our feet again several times. Some others that deserve as much or more praise on their playing efforts were Lu Yang, who sparked several scoring attacks, Au Yang, whose antics on the field held us up. Ge Vang. Jeff Murphy, our star goalie, Mike Washburn, who was a coachâs dream with his attitude and hustle, and our own leather-clad casualty. Craig Kobler. who broke his ankle in the Leaf River game. We ended our season tying Dekalb J.V. 3-3 and our biggest loss came in the opening game of regionals where an aggressive Shabbona team beat us 5-0 after we held them scoreless throughout the first half. â Steve Nagy Row I. Junior Varisty had a tremendous season by pitching in a record of 7-2. The coach for this year's team was Mr. Bob Ryser. In commenting about the season. Coach Ryser said. 'l was very proud of the girls this year. They worked very hard for the conference and Moline districts. We didn't have anyone qualify for the state tournament, but we were put into a much tougher district than we ever have been in before. The Dukes won the Homecoming game against Streator 13-6 despite the rainy weather which pushed halftime festivities indoors. The varsity had an impressive record of 17-0. They won first place in their own invitational with Dixonâs Steve Wallace placing first with a 77. They placed fifth in the E-Rab Invitational in Rockford where Tek Osborn placed fifth. They won sixth place in the Sterling Invite. They placed second in the NCIC Tournament in in Kewanee. Tek Osborn and Duke Franklin tied for third individually with Osborn winning with an eagle in a play-off. Dixon placed second at the Kewanee Regional which advanced them to Sectionals at L.P. where Dixon placed fifth. Unfortu- nately only two teams advance. However. Tek Osborn and Steve Wal- lace advanced to the State tournament. Although the tournament was delayed a week by rain, Osborn shot rounds of 74 and 76 to tie for third. In a playoff, he won on the second hole with a birdie. Steve Wallace finished mid-way in a field of ISO of Illinois' best golfers. Dixon should be proud of Tek Osborn Sr., Greg Jepson Sr., Steve Wallace Jr., Lee Kanzler Jr., Duke Franklin Soph., and Bill Detweiler Jr., a fine â83 golf team. Equal consideration should be given to the Fresh-Soph boys golf team. They had an outstanding record of 14 and 2. Dixon placed second with a 341 total. Individually. Chris Beede was medalist with an 83. Hats off to the members of the â83-â84 fresh-soph team: Scott Har- grave. Chris Beede. Brad Jepson. Tom Lawless, Mike Sholders, Mark Simon. The team started its road to state by winning its own invitational with 385. three strokes better than Moline. Individually Patty Larkin finished second with 92. The girls faltered a little by placing sixth in the Guilford Invitational. They came back at the Champaign Invitational, which is considered a mini- state-tournament. The girls finished a strong third among the stron- gest teams in the state. It was a cold, rainy day for the Dixon Regional, but the girls rose above all conditions and finished first, advancing to one of the toughest sectionals in Illinois at Lake Forest. The team finished a close third ahead of Barrington. The top three teams advanced to the state tournament. Dixon was on its way to Normal. Illinois. The first day of the tournament was pouring down rain. The officials decided to cancel the dayâs scores and make it a one day tournament. The next day was a little better, at least it only rained half the day. Dixon finished seventh out of the twelve best golf teams in the state. Special congratulations are directed to the â83'84 golf team: Patty Larkin Sr. and co-captain. Hollie Sherman Sr. and co-captain, Angie Blaine Soph., Missy Beede, Jr., Jill Beier Soph., Joy Buck Soph., Midge Magdich Fr.. and Stacey Wolford Fr. There arenât enough ways to say thank you to Mr. Lessner, the girls and boys golf teamsâ coach. This man has dedicated many hours not only during golf season but during the summer months to shape the exceptional teams Dixon has had year after year after year. One can say that the talent of the players are the result of a winning team, but it is much more than that. Mr. Lessner does more than make sure the teams get to meets. Fie works on the mechanics of the swings plus the mental aspects of golf. Again, a thousand thank yous to you, Mr. Lessner. Boys Cross-Country ÂŤ %â Coach McCabe. Sid Aurand. Wayne Hoy. Tom Snyder. Mike Leslie. Bill OâMalley. Brian Bush- man. Pat Frost. The 1983 Varsity Boys Cross-Country team compiled a dual meet record of 7-11-2. The squad placed 9th at the NCIC meet and 5th at the Re- gional, missing a sectional berth by just one place. Leaders for the Dukes individually throughout the year were Sid Aurand. who placed 1st at the Rock Falls Invt.. 6th place at the NCIC meet and was a Sectional qualifier-, and Brian Bushman, who placed 13th at the NCIC meet and 18th at the Regional, barely missing qualifying for the sectional. The Fresh Soph boys placed 3rd as a team in the NCIC meet behind L-P and Rock Falls. With varsity lettermen Sid Aurand. Brian Bushman, and Mike Leslie returning to lead this promising group of underclassmen the prospects for the 1984 season look bright indeed. Another good turnout of underclassmen next season, combined with the Dukes returning winners, will give the team the depth needed to realize its goals of a successful 1984 season. Aware of the great strides made this past season, the girlsâ goal for next season is a trip to the state meet. Leaders for the Duchesses individually throughout the season were Gwen Sherwood and Kandie Wilhelm. Sherwood, only a freshman, placed 3rd at the NCIC, 7th at the Regional, and 7th at the Sectional, which qualified her for the state meet. Gwen went on to finish 62nd in the state, the tenth highest-placing freshman. Wilhelm a sophomore, was close behind Sherwood. 7th at the NCIC meet. 10th at the Regional, and 19th at the Sectional, narrowly missing a berth in the state meet. With the whole squad returning in 1984. led by varsity letter- winners Sherwood. Wilhelm, and 1983 captain Kara Longtin. the Duchesses are excited about next season. The Dukes began the season on a bright note with respectable performances in the Amboy and Princeton Holiday tournaments. Although the Dukes finished second at Amboy, the players and coaches felt disappointed because the title was taken by Class 'Aâ Mt. Morris. After the Christmas Holidays the Dukes fell into a terrible streak of bad luck. Losses to Kewanee and Mendota, teams they had beaten earlier in the season, were compounded by the additional loss of junior enforcer Tom Wilson. Over coming the loss of Wilson was a struggle, but the Dukes played a series of close games with Class 'A' powerhouses Ottawa. Marquette. Rockridge and conference foe Princeton. As if the Dukes below par season was not enough, the varsity was dealt a severe ego blow when mentor Herb Jennings replaced the starting lineup with sophomores in the annual rivalry with Newman. Although this caused an uproar among the players, the Dukes managed to pull through and complete their season with a defeat at the tough DeKalb Regional. At the Dukes annual awards banquet, senior Todd Struhs was named Captain and Kyle Dalke was named Most Valuable Player. -by Kyle Dalke 21 Basketball Cheerleaders Pom Pons Missy Beede. The next big challenge was the Limestone tournament. The team, by that time, was a finely tuned machine. Defeating top 10 ranked Morton. Dixon took home first place. After Limestone, the Duchesses rolled on through the conference, defeating arch rivals. Rock Falls and Sterling. The Duchesses were the uncontested NCIC Con- ference champs. In the second game of the regionals. Rock Falls shattered the Duchessesâ dream of Champaign. That game was the end of a four varsity career for Diane Biggs and Sarah Collins. My staff have told me about the nights you burned the midnight oil in order to be ready for the event, and I am very grateful for your contributions. It was a real pleasure to share my birthday with so many fine young people. You are our nation's future and the inheritors of our precious legacy of freedom. November II and 12, Neil Simonâs Godâs Favoriteâ introduced rounds of laughter in the D.H.S. auditorium. The Joe Benjamin family: Joe, Tim Rudolphi, Godâs Favorite-, Rose, Mary Lafferty. the flighty Mrs. Benjamin; Ben and Sarah. Andy Ostergrant and Mandy Hull, the air-headed 22 year old twins; David. Jim Barber, the eldest son who resents his fatherâs wealth-, and Mady and Morris, Michelle Moore and Bill O'Malley, the English maid and butler find themselves in the middle of a huge dilemma brought to them by Sidney Lipton (Paul Whitcombe), Godâs messenger. Joe, a devout believer in God. is to withstand every hardship imaginable from the loss of his company to hemorrhoids, so God can prove to Satan that there is at least one man on earth who would keep his faith in God under any and every circumstance. As the story develops. David, the rebel, leaves for who knows where and Joeâs plight progressively worsens. First, the heat in the Benja- min mansion is turned off, and the food supply hits rock bottom. Then the mansion burns down and Joeâs already failing health wors- ens. Throughout the story, Sidney Lipton pays numerous visits to the Benjamin household to convince Joe to renounce God and get on with a normal life. Throughout the remainder of the story, Joe is seen wearing rags, walking slouched over with a cane, and having great difficulty talking. The scene is the privously described Joe with his entire family, excluding David. Mady and Morris, congre- gated in what used to be the living room of the Benjamin mansion. The topic of discussion is the future of the Benjamin family. Rose, Mrs. Benjamin, is fed up with the ordeal Joe and the rest are being put through. If there is a God. he intended me to take care of my family and thatâs exactly what I intend to doâ - Mrs. Benjamin made perfectly clear. With a kiss and tearful good-bye. Rose leaves calling the children after her. Sarah gives Joe a kiss, making him feel good for the first time in months, and departs sobbing. Ben. then, bids his farewell and departs. While Joe stands in prayer. David enters and asks. Wow. whereâs the bar-be-que?â Joe believing that David is drunk as usual becomes furious. Then he realizes that David is blind. Joe becomes more furious then and yelling at God. still pledges never to renounce God. With a flash of lightning and a roar of thunder. Davidâs eyesight returns and Joe straightens. From there, everything looks up. Rose comes in with sacks full of food and everyone lives happily ever after. The story ends with David talking to God asking for just one place in His plan. Enter-Sidney Lipton introducing himself as he did to Joe: Curtain. First semester saw the Robed Choir preparing for various concerts, such as the Thanksgiving Assembly and the Christmas Concert. First semester saw the senior members of the choir participate in the NCIC Music Festival. It also saw some selected members at the IMEA Music Festival at Northern Illinois University. Second semester got off to a busy start with an invitation to entertain at Ronald Reagan's birthday party. Second se- mester, Robed Choir sent three of its members to participate in the All-State Choirs. Greg Smith sang tenor in the All-State Flonor's Choir, while Jim Barber and Mart Lafferty represent- ed DHS in the All-State Jazz Show Choir. The rest of the second semester was focused on the musical production of Annie.â This yearâs Robed Choir officers were Jean McClintock, President; Tim Rudolphi. Vice-president; Ray Zinnen, Secre- tary; and Kristi Graff, Treasurer. The section leaders were Tracy Thompson, sopranos; John Varga, basses-, Kevin Wohr- ley. tenors; and Kristi Near, altos, first semester and Martha Reyes, altos, second semester. This year. Madrigals, once again, had a busy year. Under the direction of the student leader. Kristi Near, the ensemble performed at several functions. They sang at the Thanksgiv- ing Assembly and Christmas Concert. The Madrigals also held a bake sale to raise funds. The ensemble is composed of juniors and seniors selected from Robed Choir. This year the Madrigals again lived up to their reputation of singing 15th and 16th century music. To go along with this style of music, the Madrigals wore costumes similar to those worn by ancient Madrigal singers. After Christmas, their busy year soon ended. 52 Performances Row I. The 1983-84 edition of the student council was one of the most successful ever. Under the direc- tion of President Ray Zinnen. StuCo had another great year. This yearâs Leadership Conference pulled the council together. The evening session included talks given by Dr. Larry Roth and former StuCo president. Diane Slain. A movie entitled The Best Days Of Your Life . . . So Farâ was presented. The movie was about high school life and had meaning for everybody there. The next day Mr. Mike Brunick gave a two part seminar on leadership. The Leadership Conference was a great start for the council. Homecoming was the first major challenge for StuCo. Even though the halftime show had to be moved to the gymnasium after the game, home- coming was a great success. The dance, which was the most heavily attended in many years, brought the week to a close. As soon as homecoming was over. StuCo started planning for the Christmas assembly. Performances by the Blues Brothers. âPom Pons.â the D.H.S. Band, and an appearance by Santa German made this Christmas assembly one that will not soon be forgotten. The assembly was closed with the tradi- tional slide show. Upon returning from Christmas vacation, the council faced its largest and most difficult task. StuCo worked with the advance men from the White House to help prepare for President Rea- gan's visit on his birthday. February sixth. An in- credible amount of work went into turning Lancas- ter Gymnasium into the site of the biggest birthday celebration in Dixon's history. Every night of the preceeding week including all day Saturday and Sunday was spent preparing for the Monday extra- viganza. Much of the success attributed to that day was due to the efforts of StuCo. With all that StuCo did. they still found time to coordinate three bloodmobiles. Christmas cards and caroling, a citywide door-to-door cancer drive, and scorekeeping for many tournaments and fresh- men basketball games. At the end of the year StuCo was fortunate enough to see President Ray Zinnenâs all-powerful, major league superpower Chicago White Sox in action against the Texas Rangers. The Sox lost. The year came to a close at the StuCo banquet held at the Brandywine. This year's officers. Pres; Tim Rudolphi. V-P; Janet Slain. Sec; Mike Jones. Treas.; as well as the whole council were able to look back with pride at the accomplishments of the 83-84 council. Of course, as in many years past, the council owes a debt of grattitude to their advi- sor. Mr. Otto Dick, without whom the council would not have been able to function. u 3 O u 3 Stuco 67 c ⌠â â X Front: Sid Aurand. Middle Left to Right: Reagen Robbins. Rachel German. Mike Lawton. Interesting peo- ple and events were covered by Steve Wonder Nagy and Australian exchange student Michelle Down Underâ Moore. The sports staff, under the direction of first semester sports editor Ray Luzinski Zinnen kept DHS students on top of athle- tic activities and personalities of Dixon. Rounding out the sports staff were Tek Weasel Osborn and Liz Legsâ Kenne- dy. This yearâs Dixini photographers were Bruce Brewskiâ Bennett and rookie to the staff Sid Aurandski Aurand. The buisness manager during 1983-84 was Ken Mr. Beepâ Berogen. Beeper's responsibilities lay in keeping the newspaper solvent and out of debt by securing ads for each issue. With second semester came staff changes which include new editor and sports editor. Rachel German and Mike Lawton. The news was covered by Ray Zinnen and Missy Beede who joined the Dixini at the semester. Norman Feczko moved to features accompanying Steve Nagy and another new staff writer Bob Brady. Sportswriters for the second semester remained Liz Kennedy and Tek Osborn. This year, the Dixini was again published by Tri-County Press located in Polo, Illinois. Similar to last year the issues came out every three weeks. Besides setting the literary standards for DHS, Dixini members also set fashion trends in their natty blue and white Dixiniâ sweatshirts. 68 Organizations Pic.
