To Learn and Never Be Filled . . . To Love and Never Be Drained . Anon. ✓ eW4d9 2 4 DIXONIAN 1970 DIXON HIGH SCHOOL DIXON, ILLINOIS VOLUME 56 Mark Jordan and Kenneth L. Miller check the conservation of momentum Pep Rally high-jinks spark spirit. Foreword As the enrollment of Dixon High School becomes greater each year, the search to be recognized as an indi- vidual also seems to grow. Thinking solitude is the key to the answer, the youths of today are seeking them- selves and because they forget that the solution cannot be found alone, many are unsuccessful in their first at- tempt. But as teenagers grow, they realize their search can be greatly simplified by reaching out to another person. When youths try, they produce admirable re- sults without fail. When one sees the result of youths joining hands, he becomes confident there will be a new tomorrow and a brighter day. Choosing the theme of reaching out, the DIXONIAN staff has adapted it in portraying your lives as students at DHS. We have attempted to show your accomplish- ments of this past year as you were reaching out in the various facets of education. It is a fast moving place, and we, as teenagers, must be prepared to meet its challenges. We must be constantly striving to make ourselves better people. This year at Dixon High School we have had many chances to improve our minds and round out our per- sonalities. Through our participation in school- sponsored activities, we have given ourselves, our teachers, and our community a variety of achievements to be proud of. We have ex- pressed ourselves and attained our goals in areas such as athletic events, dramatic produc- tions, and club activities. This portion of our yearbook pictures us, the youth of today, reaching, always striving, to prepare ourselves for the varied settings of today’s world. Li 1 Abner Company is Largest on DHS Stage “Ah intends to give you a spoonful everyday till the day you dies . . . and for several weeks thereafter! Speaking about her famous Yokumberry Tonic, Mam- my Yokum opened the spring musical production of Lfi Abner with a roar of laughter from the audience which did not die until the final scene. In producing Lfl Abner the fine arts department, along with many other individuals, put in hours of hard work in costuming, memorization, and staging. Every- one involved would have to agree there were moments of disgust and dispare, but these were far outnumbered by the fun of putting on a comedy like Li’l Abner. With the largest cast in Dixon High history, Li’l Abner called for more preparation than any previous musical, but it also had the distinction of being the big- gest production yet. Li’l Abner was directed by Mr. Wiltz, with the assistance of Mrs. Carter as dramatic coach. Ah has spoken! says Mammy. The scientists express dedicat ion to their methods. Students of Dixon High School have demonstrated their high school spirit and sense of responsibility through their active participation in school functions. Through stu- dent support, student council sponsored a needy family drive, GAA sponsored a March of Dimes collection, and FTA continued its tutoring program. Success depends on cooperation. Only by each student reaching out to fulfill his role can club plans become a reality. Mr. Richard Boyer—Adviser Paul Curnutte—Treasurer The beginning of the 1969-1970 school year marked another period of Student Council participation in school affairs. Led by president Craig Harrison, vice-president Mike McCarthy, treasurer Paul Curnutte, Secretary Kev- in Patenberg, and advised by Mr. Richard Boyer and Mrs. Sandra Burrows, the Council's first task was reviewing and approving the dress code. Working closely with the administration and faculty, the Student Council sought to revise the dress code completely and set up a more modern and flexible one. With the advent of winter, Spirit Weeks were sponsored bv the Student Council to raise the spirit of the student body. Before Christmas the annual Goodfellows’ Drive was held to raise money to help the needy families of Dixon. Leadership has been the key word in all functions of the Student Council this year. To improve leadership qualities, the officers attended workshops and conventions in various communities and also sponsored a workshop for students of Dixon High School. It was their hope that through these various sessions, the Student Council would become an effective organization working for the betterment of Dixon High School. Offering a wide range of sports from which to choose, DHS had outstanding athletes in every division. The year round variety of activ- ities included: track, cross-country, football, basketball, wrestling, tennis, golf, and fencing. Coaches and team members alike strove to perfect the team spirit in each sport. Even in the individual sports, such as wrestling, there was a feeling of working together in order to attain highest performance. Each member of each team had to reach out for a victory, whether on the playing field, or within himself. FRESH-SOPH TRACK FRONT ROW': Jot Green, Sieve Sloan, Alan Magnafici. Dan Cutler. Team captains selected by Coach Taylor were Tim Britz, boys’ captain, and Zelda Smith, girls captain. The editor of the Stabs and Slashes, the Squires’ paper that is published six times a year, was Joyce Oellig. Scribe for the team was Mindy Smith. FRONT ROW: R. Reeder, A. Mackey. D. Wrestling, Freshmen Cheerleading Teams Added for Spirit The cheerleaders for this year were chosen by a com- mittee of teachers and students who judged them on the following qualities: leadership, voice, cheerleading skills, acrobatics, and overall appearance. Of the many girls that tried out, three seniors and three juniors were se- lected as varsity cheerleaders. Beginning with practices last summer, under the direc- tion of Mrs. Ted Trulock, these girls have continued their efforts throughout the football and basketball seasons. The cheerleaders boosted DHS spirit at all games and afternoon pep assemblies. New this year to help boost DHS spirit were freshman and wrestling cheerleaders. Also acquired were varsity traveling outfits. These outfits consisted of a blazer and skirt. The blazers were presented with the compliments of the DHS Booster Club. Teachers will never know how many students they really inspire. A teacher constantly looks for a hopeful sign of learning, but this is only shown through his ef- forts reaching out to the mind of his pupil. This sign of learning is achieved by the grasping of an idea by the student’s reaching out. Although a conflict often exists between students and fac- ulty, when student and pupil reach out simul- taneously, a white flag is flown and a victory is won. Dedicated teachers live for this, and when they see it, their goals have been met. Dixon High School’s academic record is com- mendable, not because DHS has brilliant students, but because the faculty has developed an environment which induces eager minds to learn. Because both students and teachers coop- erate at DHS, success comes much easier. Administration Richard Boyer—Assistant Principal Administrators Aid in Dress Code Revisions Marvin Winger—Principal The job of managing Dixon High School is a large un- dertaking. The students have reason to be both proud of, and grateful to our administrators. Heading the team is Mr. Stanley Weber, Superinten- dent of Schools. Responsible for the entire Dixon school system, Mr. Weber has the task of seeing that all school matters are run smoothly and efficiently. Directly in charge of Dixon High School faculty and curriculum is Mr. Marvin Winger, principal. During this past year he has approved and incorporated several new subjects into the Dixon High curriculum, thus giving the stu- dent body a larger number of subjects from which to choose. Working with Mr. Winger as assistant principal, is Mr. Richard Boyer. Mr. Boyer handles problems of attend- ance, scheduling, and the school calendar. In the absence of Mr. Winger, Mr. Boyer assumes the full responsibili- ties of the principal. Another familiar figure from our team of administra- tors is Mr. Jerrv Barabas. Administrative assistant is Mr. Barabas’ official title, and his main job is discipline. Any suc- cess of an individual student is due not only to his own efforts, but his friends reactions to them. Everything one does is under strict observation by teachers, friends, and parents. More important than just the learning of oneself, the students of Dixon learn of all people and in the process grow from tiny freshmen to mighty seniors and understand- ing, rational near-adults. The differences between a freshman and a senior are so great it seems impossible for a freshman ever to become a senior. But he eventually does, and the pain and fun he experiences in this process are incalculable. The time between the first days of freshmen and the final ones of seniors goes faster than any period in our lives. The purpose of the pic- tures in the following section is the preserva- tion of this year’s memories. Freshmen officers, Preston. Baker, and Friedrichs enjoy a lighter moment in the park. Melissa Abbot Diane Adams Timothy Allen Tieken Is Choice for H omecoming Bruce Alter Tom Anderson Rita Angel] Larry Angclton Laura Arnold Boni Baebler Debbie Baker Gregory Baker Sue Bantrup Linda Bark Cberyl Barnes William Barnhart Finally, your foolish’’ freshman days are over, and you can look back on this year and have a hearty laugh. Remember the first day of school when you entered the huge castle- like building? Those first few days were crammed with thoughts: trying to remember your locker combination, praying you would find your next class, and hoping the upper- classmen were not laughing at you. During the first few months, it seemed as if there was always something on which to vote. First of all, you elected Student Council representatives. Then you chose three class- mates to lead your class: John Preston, presi- dent; Greg Baker, vice-president; and Sue Friedrichs, secretary-treasurer. Finally, you chose Terry Tieken as your contribution to the Homecoming Court. This year was much more than a spinning wheel of events; it was a learning experience, teaching you how to live with other people. As you became adjusted, time seemed to go faster and faster. Now the whole year is gone; but the memories of this year you will never want to forget. 100 Becky Barton Becky Batt Bonnie Beaston Vickie Beckingham Jim Berei Louise Blackburn Donna Blair Tom Blair April Bonnewell Jean Boward Carl Bowles Judie Brainerd Cindy Brand Jeffery Brecunier Stanley Brink Kathy Brooks Jim Brown Melody Bruce Rebecca Bullock Mike Burgess Richard Burgess Melvin Burgett Edward Burhcnn Stacy Butler Jean Buttcrbaugh Rick Buzzard Robert Byington Ed Callahan Sophroana Callow Jan Camery Nancy Camery Jan Campbell David Carlson Donna J. You made Homecoming a week of memories as you completely dominated the main floor with your theme, “Cut the Cavaliers”. Climaxing Homecoming week was the selection of Julie Sandford as your attendant in the queen's court. Through your participation in football, bas- ketball, and wrestling you kept the spirit of DHS burning. Cheering the Dukelets through victory and defeat were cheerleaders Janet Dempsey, Sue Flach, Brenda Harden, Joanne McCoy, Sandy Predmore, Denise Quick, and Barb Ruffin. Anticipation of your junior year was kindled by the advent of spring. New responsibilities, decisions, and experiences await you. You have spent probably the fullest, hardest year of your entire high school career. Your first task, after returning to school, was selecting class officers. You chose Terry Moore president, Lezlie Shoaf vice-president, and Sherry Farley secretary-treasurer. You also elected Paul Curnutte treasurer of the Student Council. Next, Homecoming festivities put you to work decorating hallways and spreading spirit. Peggy Jones was the junior class addition to the Home- coming Court. The juniors also added three cheerleaders to the varsity squad. Jan Skibin- skie, Becky Walker, and Pat Fruin cheered the Dukes all year. In the early winter you participated in scho- lastic testing programs, which play an important part in your future educational plans. Spring brought all new and exciting activities. Many of you were active in producing the spring musical, and you attended your first prom! Now you are the top class. As the first graduat- ing class in a new decade, you faced a constantly chang- ing world and educational environment. It was hard enough keeping up with the rapid pace of this year let alone trying to get ahead. But once you did get ahead, there was nothing that could stop you. Your first step was electing three classmates to lead you through the year: Carolyn Stiles, president; Marty Hey, vice-president; and Glen Swarts, secretary. To represent your class in the Homecoming court you chose Judi Baker to reign as Queen and Wendy Weigle and Jamie Curtis to be senior attendants. Three of six varsity cheerleaders, Roxie Kuhn, Mary McCoy, and Diane Wil- liams were seniors and six seniors were asked to repre- sent DHS in the annual rotary bowl. As the year went on, it was hard to believe that your entire high school career was coming to an end.
