Swccpiug up! :Wiki clecbcafion Dear Mr. Bogott Since you came to DHS in 195-1, you have become an outstanding leader i11 the fields of teaching and athletics at our school. As physi- cal education and general science instructor and former basketball coach, you have shown ex- tensive proficiency and thoroughness in your work. Your good-naturedness, fair treatment, eagerness to help, and pleasing personality, coni- bined with an excellent manner of instruction, have had a wonderful influence on your students. You have devoted yourself to guiding the talents and directing the energies of youth. As 2111 expression of gratitude, we wish to dedicate this yearbook to you. The Class of '61 in memurp The students and faculty of DHS felt a very personal loss this year when Miss Mary Bales, our school nurse, passed away January 2, 1961. The time and energy which she so willingly gave to everyone made her not only a valuable professional person, but also a good friend. She had an intense interest in all the activities of the school and rarely missed a game, a play, or a concert. It was this interest in all phases of our school life, as well as her interest in the problems of the indi- ivdual student, which we shall remember. We are fortunate to have known her and to have been inspired by her many good deeds. How true this is! Just four short years ago you passed through the doors of DHS as freshmen, and now you are leaving as the Class of 'GL Your first year at DHS was an exciting and challenging experience which alternately fright- ened and thrilled you. You chose Peggy Wright freshman attendant of your first Homecoming. When your sophomore year began, you felt like old pros. Linda Histed was your Home- coming attendant, and Joanna Howard became Student Council secretary. The fresh-soph cheer- leaders-Peggy Wright, Kay Lebre, Helen Johnson, Carol Buckaloo, and Diane Haig- encouraged school spirit and good sportsmanship. Upperclassmen at last! What a wonderful thought! You waited in eager anticipation for your first prom, class rings, and the use of the 22 new cafeteria and gym. Helen Johnson was Home- coming attendant, and you won first prize for second-floor decorations. Judy Rowland became Student Council treasurer. Finally, your senior year arrived! You par- ticipated in clubs, sports, and classes vigorously and whole-heartedly to make this your best year at DHS. Queen Pam Gunner and attendants, Carol Buckaloo and Helen Johnson, reigned over the Homecoming festivities. Steve Paulsen and Keith Brickey, president and vice-president of the Student Council, planned and carried out many worthwhile projects. As your final year drew to a close and you attended your last prom and practiced for grad- uation, you realized the past four years were filled with happiness and exciting experiences never to be forgotten by the Class of 'GL ROGER BASSETTI NORMA LEE BAIN DIXINI 3,45 DIXONIAN 45 Hall Monitor 45 Girls' Chorus 15 Mixed Chorus 25 Six Teens 25 Alternate Cheerleader 2. On September 2, 1958, the Class of '62 started a new venturefobtaining a high school educa- tion. After you had become acquainted with the new surroundings and curriculum, you elected class officers: Sandra Weigle, Carol Haig, and Donna Crader. For your first Homecoming you elected Susan Kuhn as freshman attendant. By the end of the school year, you had become active in many extra-curricular activities. On returning in September, you soon adjusted to the new building additions. First, you elected class oflicers: Gary Carlson, Lloyd Bollman, and Gary Flanagan. lVIary Jones represented your class as secretary of Student Council. When Homecoming arrived, you chose Lori Johnson sophomore attendant. Frosh-soph cheerleaders 46 were Nancy Phalen, Susan Kuhn, Linda Lee, Sherrie Miller, and Sharon Willard. Soon your junior year arrived with all the responsibilities of lower-upperclassmen. Re- member how you looked forward to your class rings and the prom! You again selected class oflicers: Lloyd Bollman, Rollie Mercer, and Kathy Jensen. Sandra Weigle served as treasurer of the Northeast-Northwest Student Council District. During Homecoming week you won first place for your second-floor decorations. Nancy Willstead was chosen junior Home- coming attendant. Junior cheerleaders were Susan Kuhn and Nancy VVillstead. Next year you, the Class of ' 62, will be putting forth your utmost in sports and student leadership. Row 3: Paul Slonsky, David Aldorfer, Dave Szrnderson, Mike Skefiington, Bill Short, Tom Seriven. With an enrollment of 325, the largest in DHS history, the freshmen started the year off with a hang! lt took a while for some students to learn that rank has its privileges! After the first week of this new adventure ill learning. everyone settled into high school routine and elected Lester Rhodes, president 3 Carol Butterbaugh, vice-pres- identg and Martha Potts, secretary-treasurer. Using Warp the Warriors as the theme, many students eagerly decorated the campus for the Homecoming festivities. Mary Mortensen was chosen freshman attendant in the Homecoming court. The freshman football team received recog- nition for winning all its games. In basketball, also, a successful season was enjoyed. Jim Santee and Danny Dunphy were moved up to t-he fresh- soph squad early in the season. In January came semester exams and many students were seen leaving the building loaded down with school books. But soon that ordeal was over, and it was again time to enjoy school life and activities. Before long March had come, and the freshman girls were asking the boys to the long anticipated GAA Dance. Then in a Sll0l'fi time, spring arrived in Dixon and students were struck with acute eases of spring fever. Study halls became livelier, and less was accomplished than before. Since the freshman class has displayed such an invigorating spirit this year, much is expected of them in the coming three years. 59 Row 3: Sandra Reilly, Jerry Ragan, Mike Royster, lVarren Ream, Ronald Ramsey, Ross Rippeon, John Reese, Orville Alwes, Roxanne Alexander, Mr. Jordon. Under the leadership of Steve Paulsen, president 5 Keith Brickey, vice-president, Sandy Weigle, treasurer 5 and Karyn Zimmerman, secretary , and with the assistance and guidance of Mr. Host, faculty advisor for the council, many worthwhile service projects have been carried out. The Assembly Committee under Diane Haig, organized the Orientation, Thanksgiving, Christ- mas, Election, and all professional assemblies. Joan Butterbaugh and her Cafeteria Committee selected the number and type of records to be played in the cafeteria during lunch hours. Marcia Kavanagh, chairman of the Service Committee, directed her group in the decoration of the first floor for Christmas and in the selection of suitable places for pictures painted by students. The Sportsmanship Committee was headed by 68 Craig Olney. The decoration of the second floor for Christmas and the placement of twelve new flags in the building was the chief occupation of this committee. The Poster Committee, with Pam Gunner as chairman, was a new and welcome addition to the council. This committee designed and finished most of the art work that was needed. The 1960-61 officers decided to divide the large social committee into two groups. The Purple Social Committee, with Chairman Peggy Jan- kowski, and the White Social Committee, with Chairman Wanda Burgard, planned all the dances and arranged for the decorations, records, and extra help. Some of the outstanding dances were the Homecoming Dance, Twirp Dance, Christmas Dance, and the Valentine Dance. The Student Council voted to re-adopt Song Soon Ok, our little Korean friend, for the coming year. commiffeed :Service Row 2: KI. 11CC'kIl1t11l, D. l'1'i11r'c-, P. Dixon, D. Johnson, B. I.01'vnze'11. The usual events of the year occurred along with the unusual ones, causing the cutting of a page here and the adding of a page there. A lot of work is done on a yearbook which few people, other than the editors, ever realize. First a theme is selected, preliminary page plans are drawn up, and pictures are scheduled and taken. Then the task of compiling the sixteen-page sections begins. As the year progresses and the February deadline draws near, editorials must be written and revised. Since this decade seems to be an 'tAgc of Space, the staff chose this idea for their theme. By the choice of cover, use of double-page spreads, and selection of space terms and sketches, unity has been attained throughout the book. As in previous years, the 1961 Stal? has tried to prepare this DIXONIAN as an outstanding assemblage of the school activities. Without the invaluable assistance and the suggestions of Miss WVeinberg and Mr. Hamersmith, our advisors, these ideas could not have been achieved. Finally the school annual reached completion, and many hours of work faded into memory as the 1961 DIXON IAN passed into the hands of the students. Left to right: E. Kerley, J. Smith, S. Aided by page editors, advertising stall, reporters, typists, and photographers, thisyear's Editors-in- Chief, Sandy Grube and Esther Lutzweiler, did a fine job of producing the DIXINI. Student polls were brought back into existence and an eight-page Christmas issue was publishedfboth of which received hearty approval. Along with co-operation, work is essential in the output of a newspaper. Page plans are made and assignments distributed. After the articles are written, they are proofread, corrected, and typed. Following preliminary printing, the paper is returned for copy reading. lfinally the DIXINI goes to press, and the preparations for the next issue begin. Thanks to the creative efforts of our DIXINI staff, the students have been able to enjoy a bi-monthly newspaper. Row 2: S. Vandenberg, Miss Davies, M. K. Stewart, D. Grader, M. J. Sutton, S. When Esther Lutzweiler returned from a week's study-visit at the United Nations, she brought numerous ideas to the students. Since many students were interested ill starting a U. N. Club, Mr. Zinnen and Mr. Kettleborough were asked to be sponsors of the organization. After their acceptance, Mr. Bross granted permission for this club to be organized. At the Kickoff Assembly in the fall, the U. N. Club was announced and explained. At the first meeting ofhcers were elected: Secretary General, Esther Lutzweilerg Vice Con- 78 sul, Kay Dees, and Recorder, Carol Buekaloo. lVIr. Zinnen and the officers d1'ew up a constitution, and the club became official. During the course of the year, a drive for UNICEF was taken, a speaker from Chicago came to a meeting, a film was shown, and several members participated in a nation-wide contest. The purpose of the club is to develop an interest in, and an understanding of, the work and principles of the United Nations. Membership is open to any student of Dixon High School interested in the work of the U. N. A Pdf? cfm! The 111CI11bCl'S of the Library Club provide a voluntary service to our school. Each is required to work in the library either during one of his study halls or before or after school. Books are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal System. The student librarians must place the returned books on the proper shelves. Periodical displays are set up on the center reference section and the magazines must be straightened. Belonging to the Rock River Student Li- brarians' Association enables the club to learn of the activities in other schools. Janet Deck was historian for the RRSLA this past school year. Rewards to the members go far beyond learning the framework of library operation. A member attending college will find his knowledge in library work a valuable study guide. Those having a continued interest in this field can further train for work in specialized libraries of large manu- facturing firms, universities, hospitals or in gov- ernment fields. Any student now in, or having been in, an art class is eligible to join this club. During its three- year existence, the Art Club has completed several interesting projects. There have been trips to Chicago, an outdoor exhibit in the spring of 1960, and as a yearly event, a contest for the paintings of art students. With the arrival of Mr. Cookson this year, some new activities were added to the Club's calendar. Early in the year planning began for a visible art installation into the permanent im- pression of our building. Along this line, art works, particularly paintings and block prints, were sought from students, members of the com- munity, or acknowledged artists. This idea was executed by a group of club members who looked for acceptable art works. Spring plans included a trip to the art gallery on the University of Wisconsin campus. During the year the Art Club has worked actively to earn funds for its treasury. Three of the games during the basketball season were served by Art Club members working in the concession stands. The Art Club took charge of the noon concession stand in the cafeteria and continued its services throughout the year. Membership in Art Club has passed the fifty mark, and students who are genuinely interested in art and its promotion are Welcome. Oflicers for this year were: President, Pat Gid- dingsg Vice-President, Willard Emmertg and Sec- retary-Treasurer, Janice Prowant. 83 Alaanidk cfm! l Row 4: J. NVarcl, D. Glenn, C. Tayman, M. The National Honor Society is essentially an outgrowth of the National Association of Sec- ondary School Principals which created the National Honor Society to be a service to the schools and students on the secondary level. Our charter was granted in 1956, and we took the name Blackhawk Chapter. As in the more than 8,000 other chapters of National Honor Society, our members are chosen on the basis of character, service, leadership, and scholarship. There are several purposes in honoring stu- dents in a national society. Enthusiasm for scholarship is increased while a desire to par- ticipate in services to the school and community is encouraged. Personal evaluation for potential leadership is suggested and the feeling of need for continuing learning and education is trans- mitted. This respect for scholarship seems to have been received very well by students in Dixon High School. 86 The emblem of the National Honor Society is a keystone, upon which is set a flaming torch. The National Honor Society uses these two age- less symbols for its standards. lp ,The National Honor Society also supports a scholarship fund which amounts to a cumulative total of 3i5171,750. This scholarship is for the purpose of aiding promising students who wish to continue their education beyond high school. To students entering the scholarship program, it provides scholarships, awards, and certificates of merit for use by these college aspirants. The sponsors of the National Honor Society have been, since its inception live years ago, Miss Eneroth and Miss Bessmer. The oliieers for each year are the presiding officers in charge of induction ceremonies. In the year 1960-1.961 the president has been Dick Prince,vice-president, J oan Butterbaugh 5 and secretary, Carol Buckaloo. lflfM,I'e lfLlfU 6Qf5 CALL Row 5: J. Carnahan, M. Holtz, L. Nicholas, J. At the beginning of the 1960-61 school year, the girls in the FNC elected officers. Those chosen were Pat Dempsey, President, Donna lferris, Vice-President, Karen Kyger, Secretary: and Billie Jo Magnifici, Treasurer. The sponsors for the club are M1's. Currens, home economics instructor, and Mrs. Roy l+'erris. This year the members of the club took a trip to the Mennonite Hospital in Bloomington, Illinois. These two groups serve at all football and basketball games and usher for special programs including baccalaureate and graduation. Planned by the Service Committee of the Student Council several years ago, the usher corps has continued to serve and represent Dixon High School well. This year the students in the corps are under the direction of Mr. Bogott. The hall monitors are thirty-two students who have given up one study hall each day to serve the school. Four of these people a1'e on duty each period of the day. Their primary responsibility is the collecting of attendance slips from every class that is meeting while they are on duty. This is the motto that future farmers are striving to fulfill. hiembers learn to conduct and to take part in public meetings, public speaking, and trading coop- eratively. The F.F.A. foundation includes leader- ship, character development, sportsmanship, ser- vice, scholarship, improved agriculture, and patriotism. Every member of the Dixon F.F.A. must be enrolled in an agricultural class, and participate in one or more agricultural projects throughout the year under the supervision of their instructor, Mr. Tieken. The boys gain valuable and prac- tical experience from these projects. Included in the Chapter's varied activities were annual pest control contest, hayrides, several field trips and basketball games with chapters of neighboring schools. In October, 1960, the chapter oflicers for the 1960-61 school year at- tended the National F.F.A. Convention held in Kansas City, Missouri. Those officers were Duane Mumma, President, Richard Humphrey, Vice-President, Richard Dewey, Secretary, Dale Biggs, Treasurer 5 Dale Bollman, Reporter 5 George Maves, Sentinel, and the new instructor of agriculture, Albert Tieken. The main reason for the boys making the trip was to see a former mem- CL. ber, Ronald Dewey, a 1957 graduate, receive the degree of American Farmer. The Chapter also attended the International Livestock Show in Chicago. This year the Chapter held a queen contest in which about twelve farm girls participated. The contest consisted of a written test on the I .F.A. manual, pounding nails, identifying tools and a personality question. The girl chosen as queen was Carol Buckaloog her attendants were Audrey Hodges and Carol Butterbaugh. As a means of earning money, the Chapter, in cooperation with the G.A.A., sold popcorn, coffee, and soft drinks at all home football games. 90 This page sponsored by DIXON ONE STOP SERVICE Farm Store Good Luck and Best Wishes to Dixon Chapter F. F. A. g. CL. CL. XVhile promoting goals of good health, fellow- ship, and sportsmanship, the GAA, under the SllIJ0l'VlSlOll of Mrs. Roe and Miss lialtzell, again had a very busy year. XV orki11g with the sponsors to set up the yea1 s program were Sandy Grube, President, Barb Brierton, Viee-President, Kay Lebre, Secretary- Treasurer 5 T hora Aldorfer, Kathy Jensen, Mary Varga, Sports Chairmen, .loan Butterbaugh, Social Chairmang and Pam Gunner, Publicity Chairman. The fall season opened with a tea planned by Jane Howe for the freshmen girls. At this tea, the girls were introduced to the activities a11d goals of the GAA. Anotlier high point of this season was the Conference Playday held at Dixon and attended by girls from each GAA in the XCIC Conference. Shortly after this, three board mem- bers, accompanied by hlrs. Roe, attended a work- shop in Peoria where they gained many good ideas for keeping the program running smoothly during the year. The sports during this period of time were hikes, archery, soccer, and basketball. Proud winners of the basketball tournament were the seniors, a small but peppy team. Near the end of the season, Pather's Night Out, planned by Esther Spangler, was held. The girls brought their fathers to the school for an evening filled with with sports and entertainment. At Christmas time the GAA helped two needy families, giving them food and clothing in an effort to make their Christmas a happier one. The cheerleaders, with Carol Buckaloo as chair- man, took charge of this activity. Of course, there was also the annual Christmas party, and, as last year, the girls brought small children who were each given a gift by Santa tJackie liittsj. Just before vacation, two busloads of girls traveled to Chicago whe1'e they visited the Museum of Science and lndustry in the morning and spent the remainder of the day shopping. YVinter sports included volleyball, badminton, a11d modern dance. liach one of these was held separately for a period of three weeks. Bowling was continued for the whole season. The polio drive, supervised by Janet Currens, took place in l ebruary. This drive included game collections, a bake sale, eoffee and donut sales, babysitting, and election of the Polio King and Queen. Also in February was the initiation of new members. In the spring was the GAA Dance and the eighth grade playday. Spring sports were hiking, archery, tumbling and baseball. The Senior lfare- well Banquet concluded the GAA year. Monday was Team Recognition Day with each member of the varsity football team wearing a football-shaped tag with his name, position, and number 011 it. On School Decoration Day, Tuesday, members of each class decorated an assigned part of the building. The Juniors received first prize for their decorations on the second floor. When the students arrived at school Wednes- day, Tag Day, they found on their lockers tags with several different slogans printed on them. They wore these throughout the day. Thursday was designated as Pep Rally Day. In the morning the students voted for the queen, and, in the evening when they gathered at the band shell for the pep rally, they learned the results of the election. Pam Gunner was an- nounced the 1960 Homecoming Queen. Her attendants were Carol Buckaloo and Helen Johnson, seniorsg Nancy Willstead, junior, Bonnie Jensen, sophomore: and Mary Mortensen, fresh- man. The program was planned by the As- sembly Committee of the Student Council, and Janet V aile served as master of ceremonies. The students then formed a snake-dance line to the bonfire at Borden's Field for a pep session led by the cheerleaders. Friday was T-D Day. Dixon defeated their old rival, Sterling, 13-7. During the evening half- time ceremony, the queen and her attendants were presented, and Pam was crowned by Al Wikoff' and John Jacobs, football co-captains. Members of the 1940 football team were also introduced to the crowd. Departing from the usual custom, the Home- coming Dance was held on Saturday night this year. Pam was again crowned queen by Steve Paulsen, Student Council president. Two seniors, Curt Holland and Bob Wolf, made second team All Conference, as did Rollie Mercer, a junior. While Bob Wolf was mentioned for All State football teams, Curt Holland received honorable mention on the Chicago Daily News team. Al Wikoff, the teaIn's leading ground gainer, and John Jacobs, the best fullback in the con- ference, were co-captains. Jim Boyer, Russ Brown, John Varga, Steve Paulsen, and Dick Shank worked hard and did a fine job for our team this year. At the close of the season Bob Wolf was chosen most valuable player. The varsity football team won a rousing 14-0 victory over their first opponent, Hall. Both touchdowns were made in the first half-one by Dave Schmidt and one by Al Wikoff. The team ran a total of 300 yards in this game. In one of the hardest fought games of the season, the Dukes suffered a 15-0 loss to Freeport. A few plays after the opening kickoff, Freeport marched 59 yards for a touchdown. The Duke line was outweighed about 50 pounds per man. In the Ottawa game Schmidt made the first touchdown in the third quarter 5 then he threw a hafta! pass to Al Wikoff for the second TD. Although the team played hard, they tumbled to a 39-13 loss. Highlighting the 1960 Homecoming Week was a 13-7 victory over Dixon's arch rival, Sterling. Bob Wolf made the first touchdown in the second quarter, Dave Schmidt scored another in the fourth quarter and also ran for the extra point. Dixon fumbled everything during the first half of the DeKalb game, but in the third quarter the offensive moved well. Although Wikoff and Wolf made good runs, DeKalb gained possession of the ball and won 13-0. Even though the Dukes tried their best in the Kewanee game, they lost 13-12. Dave Schmidt passed for 15 yards to Bob VVolf fo1' a touchdown in the third quarter. John Jacobs ran for the other TD. Streator gave the Dukes their worst beating of the year, 27-0. The Dukes ended the season with a 20-7 loss against Rock Falls, although they led at the end of the first quarter, 7-6. Bob Wolf ran 44 yards for the sole touchdown and added the extra point. Next year's team should be a fine one with Chris Lazaris, Larry Bross, Lloyd Bollman, Rich Stewart, Rollie Mercer, and Joe Coffey all rc- turning. TELEPHONE COURTESY DOES PAY OFF . . . Although Mr. Swan's 1961 fresh-soph football team ended the season with two wins and six losses, they showed great prospects for next year's varsity squad. Tom Schroeder and Jim Batista scored second- half touchdowns for a come-from-behind, 12-6, victory over our first opponent, Hall. The fol- lowing week, Freeport scored in the fourth quarter to win 7-0. Todd Kennedy's score in the second quarter of the Ottawa game was not enough, and the Dukes lost 13-6. Jim Batista made our only 112 touchdowns as Sterling and DeKalb defeated us, 21-6 and 13-6. The Dukelets had fumble trouble at Kewanee, losing 18-0. Streator, surprised to find the Duke team bolstered by freshmen, took a 19-0 tumble. In this game Jerry Heaton took the ball 67 yards for a TD in the third quarter, the longest touchdown run of the year. The last game of the season sent the Dukelets to Rock Falls where a large-scoring thriller took place. Although Heaton, Batista, and Schroeder each scored, the Dukes lost 25-19. Row 5: M. As the custom of Duke freshmen football squads has been to win, this year's team was no exception. The team soundly defeated its opposition, losing only one game to Polo 12-6, and tying Sterling 6-6. The team showed a lot of hustle and eagerness to lea1'n. In the first few practices, the Little Dukes had to adapt to the idea of playing as one team, because in grade school the boys had played against each other. Among the outstanding Dukelets were Cornelius CCornyD Patterson, Jim Santee, and Fred Sanford, all of whom did some fine running for Coach Wallick. Jim Knigge did a commendable job quarterbacking the frosh to their overall record of 6-1-1. Two times during the year the harriers racked up scores of 15-50, a per- fect score, against their opponents. They ae- complished this feat at Princeton and again at Rochelle. The Varsity soundly defeated all opposition, with the closest meet being against Sterling, which the Dukes captured 24-31. Art Nicholas, Charles lfiehter, and Ken Springer were the runners who paced the cindermen, with Neil Grove being the most consistent runner all year. The Fresh-Soph cross-country team also had a fine record, winning four, losing one, and tying one. These young Dukes also captured a perfect game of 15-50 during the season when they whipped Princeton. Doug Stuart was a standout among Ifrosh-Soph runners. In special meets and tournaments the harriers fared very well. Our cross country team captured seventh place out of 19 schools in the Sterling Invitational Meet. In the NCIC meet the Var- sity placed fifth, as did the lfrosh-Soph team. At the District Meet, out of 17 teams running, the harriers captured sixth place. Individually, Art Nicholas captured twenty-fifth place and Neil Grove landed twenty-ninth place. 114 This page sponsored by ROCK RIVER READY MIX Mr. George W. Lindquist i I -..nn-. .. .---hull A. The season began at Fulton with the host team defeating the Dukes 61-46. The following night the Dukes opened the home season by beating Rockford Harlem 67-55. Freeport overcame the Dukes 52-42 in their next encounter. Dixon came up against a red-hot Rochelle quintet and lost 85-55. In one of their best games of the year, the Dukes upset West Rockford 64-61. Sterling came to Dixon the following week and thumped the Dukes 68-36. The Mendota squad beat Dixon 84-62. The Dukes did not fare so well in the DeKalb Holiday Tournament. In the opener, York turned back the Dukes 72-51. Dave Johnson scored a basket with eight seconds to go in the next game to tie Geneva-Kingston at the end of regulation time, the Dukes went on to post a 73-71 win. In our final game of the tournament, Waterman handed the Dukes a 62-51 loss. After the holiday tournament, Dave Johnson and Art Barnhart landed starting positions along with Rich Stewart, Pat Dixon, and Dave Keeley to lead the Dukes to a successful 1961 season. The much improved squad lost to Hall 62-61 in overtime with Keeley hitting 25. The Dukes threw a real scare into the Princeton Tigers, NCIC second-place finishers, before bowing 51-49. The next night Dixon beat Rock Falls 53-50. Geneseo almost fared a loss as Gary Flanagan connected for 19 points, but lost 59-56. The Dukes beat Amboy 64-53, as Rich Stewart grabbed 29 re- bounds. Dixon's first NCIC victory came the next week when the Dukes knocked off Kewanee by a 64-54 count. Ottawa took them by a 66-52 score the following game 3 but when the Dukesfaced DeKalb, Dave Johnson scored 30 points to help post Dixon's second conference victory. Johnson scored 21 points the next week against Sterling, but the Golden Warriors came out in front 65-57. Dave Keeley scored 32 points in leading the squad to a 71-62 victory over Rock Falls. In the season finale, the Dukes trounced Streator 69-53 with the Jay-Vees playing the entire fourth quarter. In the Rock Falls regional, Keeley led the Dukes to a 56-47 victory over Oregon by scoring 27 points. Two overtimes were necessary to beat Rock Falls, but Dave Johnson scored the winning bucket to beat them 72-70 in a game in which 68 fouls were committed. The Dukes terminated their season by losing the championship game to Sterling 60-49. Dave Keeley was fourth in scoring in the NCIC standings with a 17.0 point average, he was selected as this year's most valuable player. Dave Johnson, who came on to become an excel- lent guard, became the players' choice as captain, he also won the free throw trophy with an average of .800. Dave Keeley was selected on the NCIC all-conference first team, and Dave Johnson was given honorable mention. 116 This page sponsored by DIXON NATIONAL BANK The Friendly Bank with the Revolving Clock Member Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Johnson A. 1521I'lll11ll't C I lf html U. Behind Coach Bob Sonneman, the Duke grapplers had the very line record of 11-2 in dual meet competition. Wrestling has always been a success at DHS, but the 1960-61 season was the best in Dixon history. Coach Sonneman's squad also did very well in wrestling tournaments. In the Conference meet held in Lancaster Gym, the Dukes placed third out of ten teams. Little Neil Grove and Big Jim Boyer led the way by capturing first places in their 120 and heavyweight classes, respectively. junior ucwfiify wredfgm Row 3: G. Danck, R. Boyer, W. Sanford, C.
