Kavanagh, Mr. Host, L. Baker, J. Gerlach, K. Brelsfoard, C. Drew. This was the second year for the Student Council under the direction of Mr. Host. This year's oflicers were John Gerlach, presi- dent 5 Larry Baker, vice-president, Ken Brels- foard, treasurerg with Anne Kavanagh and Carolyn Drew acting as co-secretaries. The Social Committee, under the super- vision of Louise Wolf, planned eleven dances. One of the first of these was the Homecoming Dance. The Twirp Days added variety and fun to the social events again this year. At the Election Dance, the winning candidates in the Student Council election were an- nounced. One of the biggest of all the school dances was the Spring Semi-Formal. The committee concluded its social calendar with the traditional Senior Farewell Dance. Dave Knouse's Sportmanship Committee was in charge of the election of the queen and her court during Homecoming. A dance was held in the school gym. The highlight of this dance was the crowning of the queen. The committee worked on a code of ethics and traffic control on the stairs and in the halls. The Organization Committee, under Fred Shaeffer, promoted the Campus Club. The committee also handled the float parade and the pep rally during Homecoming. The com- mittee was in charge of the election of the track queen. Larry Newcomer and the Public Relations Committee had the responsibility of pub- licizing the dances and activities of the council. Dance posters, traffic control signs, and drink- ing fountain signs had to be made. They also put announcements on the P.A. The Service Committee, under the chair- manship of Kathy Currens, promoted the 45 Club and the Usher Corps. The Assembly Committee, which was headed by Everctte Brooks, planned the assemblies. They planned nine assemblies including the Orientation Assembly, the Robed Choir As- sembly, the Christmas Assembly, the Band Assembly, and the Election Assembly. The Student Council would like to extend their appreciation to Mr. Host, faculty ad- visor of the Student Council. His constant supply of suggestions, his time, and above all his patience contributed a lot to making this year one of the most progressive for the Student Council. 49 lfn Counci Organizations w Y 1 4: 's -', , ,.. ,mly Ir'm1'I.'f'.NY4-iiw, KI. To become a member, a student must earn twenty-tive points through the Quill and Scroll point system by working on the staff of the DIXINI or DIXONIAN for a semester. The DIXINI artist, photographer, and editor-in-chief of the DIXQNIAN gain membership by one year's work on the publications. Officers elected at initiation ceremonies last spring were Edith Pana, president, Norma Iiebre, vice-president, and Joan LeSage, secretary-treasurer. Mr. Richard Albright, English and journalism instructor and DIXINI ad- visor, served advisor for the Dixon Chapter of the Quill and Scroll Society. The national society offered a scholar- ship worth 85500 to any student who qualified in two competitive examina- tions. These were a preliminary test in current events and a final test given to all students who did well on the first test. The scholarships were given to students all over the United States for two years attendance at any accredited school of journalism. All students who qualilied for Quill and Scroll during the school year were formally initiated in the spring at a pic- nic, and officers for the next year were elected. How I.' K. Krug, lVl. National Honor Society The Blackhawk Chapter of the Na- tional Ilonor Society, under the co-spon- sorship of Miss Christine Bessmer and Miss Olga Iflneroth, is an organization consisting of high ranking juniors and seniors in Dixon High School. To be eligible for consideration into the Society, a student must be in the upper one-third of his class. Fifteen per eent. of the seniors are chosen and ten per cent of the juniors are selected. This year for the first time in D.H.S., the juniors and seniors are voting to select their fellow elassmates into the organization. After the voting of the faculty, a group of teachers appointed by lNTr. Bross make the final selection of the new members. The final decision depends equally upon four qualifieationsfseholarship, service, leadership, and character. The Society, however, is not an active organization. Its main purpose is to honor the high ranking students in the junior and senior classes. It also at- tempts to create an enthusiasm for scholarship and service while encour- aging higher education. The officers for this year were Dave Knouse, president: Dave Raymond, vice- presidentq and Kathy Currens, secretary- treasurer. The new senior members initiated at the National llonor Assembly were Kathy Farlson, Caroline Coakley, Tom lfinoh, Ted lfolk, Carol Matson, Sally Melvin, Linda Newcomer, Diane ltoberts, Judy Schnell, lfred SheaH'er, Robert Swaney, Carol Willard, and lX'Iarian Woessner. 11,0117 I: K. flurrens, J. l,eSage, l'l. Future The Future Nurses Vlub, under the sponsor- ship of the Women's Medieal Auxiliary of Dixon with Mrs. Alma Coss and Mrs. Cleta Currens as advisors, is an organization in which eighty-eight girls have banded together to learn more about the nursing profession. The officers elected last fall were president, Joan Smith: vice-president, Roberta Reeder, secretary Peggy Bell, and treasurer, Margery Helfrich. The girls who registered were placed on com- mittees to better facilitate the functions of the club. Nurses The girls began their activities with a bake sale held on November 23. Initiation was held on December 12. During the Christmas vaca- tion, the girls honored their mother with a tea. The VVomen's Medical Auxiliary helped the members become better acquainted with the nursing profession. They set up a program in which all the girls were able to work in the hospital or one of the nursing homes. The freshmen are required to work at minimum of ten hours before receiving their membership pins. How 1.' K. Spencer, I.. Farley, S. Moser, li. Heed, J. Hughart, .1. Vaile, D. Ferris, li. Gehant, S. During her senior year, Wanda received supe- rior rating on the honor roll. Very active in school activities, she was a member of the Spanish Club, G.A.A., DIXONIAN, DIXINI, and Future Nurses Club, holding the office of secretary during her junior year. After grad- uation Wanda had planned to become a lah- oratory technician. Those who knew her will always remember her kindness, co-operative spirit, friendliness, and her willingness to help others. The membership now totals two hundred and fifty. The Girls' Athletic Association is under the supervision of Mrs. Lucy Roe, with Linda Burke, president, Janet Wolf, viee-president, Arlene Hill, secretary-treasurer, Sandra Dodd, senior sports chairmang Judy Schreiner, junior sports chairman: Diane Roberts, social chair- man: and Jeanie Kishbaugh, publicity chair- man. In October, Mrs. Roe and the members on the board attended a workshop at Streator, Illinois. In the summer, the president and vice-president for the following year attend Northern Camp, which is located on Lake Geneva. During the fall, most of the girls partici- pated in their usual activities, which included basketball, badminton, and hiking. A group of the GAA members enjoyed an exciting trip in November to Chicago where they attended the motion picture Around the World in S0 I lays. For the winter sports, bowling and volley- ball contests were held between teams made up from members of each class. Dixon High GAA won second place in the State in the bowling tournament. A trophy was given to us from the State of Illinois High School GAA. Our Dixon girls were also entered in the State basketball tournament. A Christmas party was held during long homeroom on Wednesday, December ll. The Four Winds provided the entertainment. At Christmas, the GAA donated food and clothing to a needy family in Dixon. The animal Polio Drive brought in about 3500. The proceeds were made by selling coffee and doughnuts in the banks, freshman dime collections, and a blanket collection during bas- ketball games. The freshman initiation was held February 2-1, with Linda Newcomer in charge. As spring rolled around, many out-oil door activities got under way, including such sports as golf, hiking, baseball, and archery. The annual GAA dance was held in the school gym on March 21. To end the year, a banquet was held honoring the senior members. At this time, awards were presented to the girls of the GAA. A permanent plaque was pur- chased from donations by the girls, in mem- ory of Wanda Howard and Phyllis Teeter. These two girls had been among the most active members. 67 'O 36630 Se cr of SPX N 8634 S as Sl F fx Q9 Camera Club Hou' I: IC. Brass, S, Nlwilinnis, J. Stmill'vr, J. YYolt', Mr. Hl'I1IIK'I'SiTl1. Johnson, R. Cecil. B. Bollman, L. Cappa. A new organization found itself listed among the clubs of D.H.S. this yea1'. The Campus Club, sponsored by Mr. William Drake, was formed for the purpose of encouraging juniors and seniors to enter college and giving them a closer look at college requirements and cam- pus life. The club does this through inform- ative films and speakers. This year most of the work done in the club was in laying the foundation of the organiza- tion. Aaron Johnson was appointed general chairman of two committees that were instru- mental in the club's organization. The Consti- tution and By-laws Committee was headed by Kathy Currens, and its members consisted of Beverly Bollman, Kirby Holland, and Laurie Cappa. Bob Cecil and Mary Kavanagh served under Dave Knouse, chairman of the Program Committee. After the foundation for the Campus Club was laid, oflicers for the year 1958-59 were elected. Bob Cecil was chosen presidentg Becky Reeder, vice-president: and Beverly Bollman, secretary. Next year the club plans to meet at least once a month. At each meeting a speaker or film will be presented to the students. The Campus Club is open to all members of the junior alld senior classes who are interested in attending college. 73 if 2 s, Q 5 'Q .' :Zig -5-4' .ff Y 'O G . These groups provided entertain- ment for many school and civic functions. The liobed Choir is a selected group of boys and girls who are chosen by tryouts. Students from all four classes may belong to thc choir. During the school year, the choir presented three assemblies before the student body. In the spring, they toured to two other Illinois schools to give exchange assemblies and also sang in the Spring Choral Concert. Some of the members of the choir represented D.H.S. at the North Central Illinois Conference Music Festival and at the State Music Festival. This year the ofiiicers who were elected were Larry Baker, president: .loc Patterson, vice-president: and Tamara Thompson, secretary. The ac- 78 companists were Kathy Currens and Kathy Carlson. The lVIadrigal, a group of singers chosen from the Robed Choir, entertained at civic organi- zations and at the Christmas and Spring Con- certs. They represented Dixon at the District Music Contest, and, upon receiving a superior rating, advanced to the State Contest. The Four NVinds, a barbershop quartet, en- tertained at the Student Council Election Dance, the Christmas Assembly, and the Spring Concert. They also appeared on the liobed Choir tour. The Twelve Belles enchanted many audi- ences during the year with their vocalizing. They sang for the Christmas and Spring Con- certs, after-game dances, the Cr.A.A. The squad consisted of only twenty members, twelve of whom were freshmen. At times in the season, Coach Swan sent as many as nine freshmen onto the field to start a foot- ball game. The team compiled a l-4-l record in this season's play. Al NVikoff, a freshman, led the rushers with a 5.4 average per carry, followed by sophomore Roger Wolf with a 5.0 average. In its first game, Dixon was edged by Freeport, 12-6, as the Pretzels scored twice in the second quarter. Sterling then outfought the Dukes in a rugged contest, 213-13. Ottawa, the conference cham- pions, came to Dixon to trounce the Duklets 33-0. At this point the tide turned. DeKalb edged Dixon, 13-0, on two first quarter scores. Dixon came from behind to tie l'rinceton's high-rated team, 13-13. Dixon then set suit for the varsity in the final game of the year by clipping a powerful Rock Falls team, 7-li. M r Swan -Coach Because of the Hu epidemic, the Dukelets did not have a game with Hall Township. 93 'f v f Q Q .v G-wi 4 qw '44 it 1 K - Awnmw f ,, LS..
