' I ' ' MR. T. C. COLEMAN Our Principal and Superintendent Our Vice Principal We are told that our most important weapon in the battle of ideas which is being waged about us every day is our free public schools. In order to serve as an effective instrument, the school should and must remain close to the people. We must be ever conscious, as students in school and as adults providing education for others, that the schools are our responsibility just as it is our responsibility to pass along to others, the free- dom and privileges we enjoy. Gui' Principal 'Ne hear persons say the schools should return to the Three R's, by themselves are as old fashioned as the horse and buggy. There are Four Ft's today-the fourth being responsibility. This Ft includes honesty, dependability, reliability, good citizenship, etc. The Fourth R could be more important than the other three especially in a world today. We need responsible persons in our government and organization offices to represent us fairly and accurately. Our democratic government and way of living depends upon sound representation. The Fourth R is important because it is difficult to find people willing to assume jobs requir- ing responsibility. Too many persons want the other fellow to do it for them. Employers have been faced with the problem of finding responsible and reliable employees. They are often more concerned with these traits than academic achievement. More and more, schools are called upon to make recommendations based on personality. The Fourth R can only be developed by the home. school, and certain community organizations. The dif- ficulty of developing this R is that it can't be learned from lust textbooks, it has to be developed by doing- by each one taking part and assuming responsibility and good citizenship. School organizations, activities, and policies are de- signed to help students develop the Fourth R by doing, by taking part, and by living in the school community. The amount of development depends upon the student and his background. Dixon High School is well organized so each student may develop all Four Rs The faculty hopes that you graduates have developed yourselves to your fullest extent and that your school will be remembered as suc- cessful as well as pleasurable. Best of luck to you! To the other classes, the faculty will be with you to help you in any way possible. We trust you, too, will soon be successful graduates. Sincerely, T. C. COLEMAN MR. THOMAS L. The Chanticleer Staff sincerely expresses its gratitude to the faculty of Dixon High School for its assistance which has made the publication of this yearbook possible. The faculty has not only taught school this year, but also has chape- roned the school dances, sponsored the student government, extracurriculum, as well as many other community activities. The asset that our teachers are is never fully realized until one sits down and thinks of the time and effort they put in to make our school days happy ones. Once again the Chanticleer staff would like to express its appreciation to the Dixon High School faculty. mf!! Senior History The senior class, after much hard work as underclassmen, has been able to devote their time to setting a good example for the under- classmen, advising the student body, contribut- ing to its enrichment, and enjoying their last year as high school students. The class of 1955 as freshmen decorated for Baccalaureate and sponsored a dance: as sopho- mores they decorated for graduation, sponsored the Sock Hop, and sold magazine subscriptions, as juniors they sponsored the lunior Prom, fi- nanced the Senior Banquet, sponsored the lun- ior Carnival, and decorated a flower booth at the May Fair. These projects performed by the class of N355 under the supervision of Mr. Wes- ley O'Neill were all successful. As seniors the class stole away to a secret hideaway for their skip day in the spring. Games, swimming, and boating were enjoyed by all the seniors on this much looked forward to skip day. Combining the banquet with the Senior Ball, the class enjoyed an extremely fine evening for dining and dancing at the Clare- mont Hotel in Berkeley. This senior class will be missed, but the school looks forward to hearing of their accomplish- ments in the years to come. it ,ff P7 W wif 0 QE 'Wjxy pw-W WWW W Mgww 2 MMA!! Among the booths featured were the dart throw marriage booth, wishing well, the tomato throw and others. lt was one of the major successes of the year. Another big event and the only formal dance of the year was the lunior Prorn. It was based on the theme Neptune , Rhapsody. The decorations were made to look like underwater scenery. The prom was held on December 4. Mal Dudley and his Great orchestra played for the dance. A flower booth was also decorated by the lunior Class at the Dixon May Fair. Under the helpful leadership of Mr. Yelle the lunior Class Advisor and the willingness and cooperation of the Iunior Class one can really say that this has been a successful year for the class of '56. Sophomores 'tif ,... ,Z LEFT TO RIGHT Bob Kennedy Pat Wadsworth Sharon Forden Pat Mack The biqqest class at Dixon High School the class of 57 has had a very suc- cessful sophomore year. The sixty-eiqht students of this class have held many activities and each one has been a success. The first major activity of the class was the maqazine sales whicn helped to boost the class treasury. These sales are an annual project for all sophomore classes. The money acquired by the class on a percentage basis from the maga- zine subscriptions are really a bio help in putting on future N ass activities. On October l5th after the Dixon-Winters football aame the class held the an' nual Sophomore Sock Hop. Everyone came decked out in crazy socks and prizes were aiven for the best ones. A qood time was had by all and for once no one Could complain of scuffecl shoes! To wind up the year the class decorated for qraduation. This is one of the bia- qest duties the sophomore class has. This year graduation was held for the first time at Madden Memorial Hall. The decorations were very pretty and well liked by both the qraduatina class of 55 and the people attending, The class of 57 now turns the paqe of their sophomore year and looks for- ward to two more successful years at Dixon Hiqh School. Many duties must be performed by the House of Representatives, and as usual, each duty must be performed with the welfarf' and betterment of the school in mind. Among the duties of the House of Representatives are the assraninq of orqani- zatrons to decorate windows for certain holidays. The House assrans organizations to do this because it feels that the spirit of the holidays is better understood and enjoyed by the student if there is somethina in the halls to remind them of it, Thr- House wishes to thank each orqanization for its cooperation in makinq the halls aay for the holidays. The House did its part by decoratinq a window along with the Sffnato for St. Patricks Day. Next in line :or the House was the Christmas Party. Much work went with this party. The House bought and sacked candy and wrapped the arfts that each student brings as his admission price to the party. The qifts were sent as Christ mas presents to an orphanage in Sacramento. Elections were handled by the House with utmost efficiency and the House would like to congratulate each new officer of the student body for next year. The House prepared a handbook about the school to he given to each Fresh- man at the start of next year. The biqaest event of the year for the House was the school lloat for the Dixon May Fair. This is one of the busiest times of the year for every student, but the members of the House gave up their time and put much effort into makina a float cf which Dixon Hiqh School was very proud. Every year G.A.L. seems to be gaining in membership. On September 30th, sixteen new members were initiated. The initiation was held at Putah Creek near Davis. For a club of this size there are many activities. During Christmas Vacation G.A.L. was host to the G.A.L. Alumni for a basketball game. The Alumni won 27 to l4. The week of Ianuary l7-22 was declared Sadie Hawkins week in Dixon High School. The familiar question among the girls was, who am l going to take to the dance on lanuary 22nd? The annual Rainbow-G.A.L. basketball game was played as well as many games against other schools in numerous sports. During the football games the G.A.L. girls were seen behind the counters selling refreshments. A delicious banquet was given in the honor of the Senior members to bring to a close their active membership in GAL.
